The article I chose talks about motivation in the business world. As It goes in depth of ways to help employees by simply motivating them and how that could be the biggest difference of how they perform in their job. It also talks about the significance of understanding your employee as an individual and human being and what abilities work best for them. As opposed to just focusing on work related tasks and not understanding an employee’s mental approach. The way the article tries to explain it, is by emphasising on 6 factors. Which is communication, professionalism, management style, training, recognition, and fun. Each factor is thoroughly detailed and explains how to effectively use it to help the employee be more successful and how that will ultimately help with the business as a whole. As well touches on that being a good person is the main objective and everything comes after. As creating a friendly work environment where everyone feels included is the root of a successful company.
The article also relates too many of the experiences I go through in my life. For example, it talks about the need of individuals receiving recognition. As a young child I always felt more satisfied when my parents let me knew that they were proud of me and they made sure I knew that. It could’ve been the smallest of things such as learning how to tie my shoes and the enthusiasm they had for that made me feel I could do anything. Also when I was young I wouldn’t do well on my math tests even though I would study very hard for them. When I would come home sometimes I would be scared to see the reaction of my parents. However, even though it wasn’t the mark they necessarily wanted they realized that I worked hard for it and knew it would come eventually and let me know firmly that the end result must be good. So the ability of being recognized made me feel really good and kept me away from the negative thinking. As well the article talks about being a professional and not letting emotions getting the better of you. As a young child, I used to act on my emotions rather than thinking about it first. I let people’s words get in my head and that made me feel a certain way about myself. However, as I got older I got stronger mentally
As you may have heard, Mr. Swift has made a very modest proposal about what to do with the situation of starvation among adults. Mr. Swift has proposed that after a year of a child's birth, they be eaten if the family wishes. I, being a mother of a baby, currently, could not approve of this proposal more. Me and my husband together, concur, this will allow us to not go hungry, but also fulfill our wish to have another baby. We've always wanted more kids, but we only desire a baby. We don't want them after they have grown older. We already have an older son. Now, with this proposal, we won't go hungry and we can stay full for months on end and all I must do is push out a baby. No big deal.
The standard way of thinking about motivation has it that the only way to get people to be driven is to reward them extrinsically. In other words, the way we generally try to motivate people is by dangling a carrot in front of their face, or pushing them with a poke to the ribs with stick. Many people assume that if you want someone to do something, you incentivize them with external compensation. For example, if you want a student to work harder in class, offer them extra credits. If you want your basketball team to be better, make them run more suicides as punishment. However, in this book, Drive: ’’The Surprising Truth About What Motivates Us’’ by Daniel Pink challenges this conventional, preconceived notion of motivation of carrot and stick mentality. Pink divided motivation into three categories that evolved over time: motivation 1.0, 2.0 and 3.0.
Motivation is the force that makes us do things, whether accomplishing personal goals or completing tasks at work. Most people are motivated as a result of their individual needs being satisfied, which gives them the inspiration to perform specific behaviors for which they receive rewards (Kinicki & Williams, 2011). These needs vary from person to person, as everybody has specific needs to be satisfied. When we consider factors that determine the motivation of employees, many of us think of a high salary. This answer is correct for the reason that some employees will be motivated by money, but mostly wrong for the reason that it does not satisfy other needs to a lasting degree (Bizhelp24, 2010). This supports the idea that human
In “The Surprising Science of Motivation”, Dan Pink explained how the 21st century is requiring people to become more creative and think outside of the box. Allowing yourself to view all the possibilities instead of restricting solutions can provide more positive rewards. As a result, I find myself understanding the concept that external rewards like money are not the best way to motivate ourselves or others. Therefore, motivation lies within everyone by giving them the power to examine three elements of motivation which include autonomy, mastery, and purpose. Those that follow this motivation are not receiving cash reward but a reward of accomplishing their own task. In summary, I know understand that a person can be motivated by their
When we see a person acting in an abnormal way, we cannot help but think “why are they doing that?” We form judgements about people and question the reasoning behind their actions in an attempt to better understand their situation. This ability to understand intentions plays an important role in today’s society, allowing us to relate to one another and form deep connections through picturing ourselves in that same position. Nevertheless, there are times when we are unable to relate, and unable to understand why someone chooses to act in a certain way, say a certain thing, or be a certain type of person. This desire – this motivation to do something – has been felt by each and every human being
Motivation is the drive within humans that makes us act, it is a process that influences goal directed behavior. Drives are considered internal factors that push an organism into action. Throughout our lives, we have certain drives within us that motivate us to behave and act in a certain way to fulfill our needs and desires. We have biological, social and emotional drives within us. Without motivation, we would not have the ability to take action and have the potential to achieve self-actualization. There are various motivational theories. Drive Reduction Theory according to Clark Hull (1943,- 1952), humans have internal biological needs which motivate us to perform a certain way. These needs, or drives, are defined by Hull as internal states of arousal or tension which must be reduced. A prime example would be the internal feelings of hunger or thirst, which motivates us to eat. According to this theory, we are driven to reduce these drives so that we may maintain a sense of internal calmness.
The importance of motivation for learning has been a focus of education psychologists for decades. Guay et.al., (2010) defines motivation as “the reasons underlying behaviour”. Currently the focus in research about motivation for learning, is on why there are some students who perform well in school and others who struggle to meet the academic expectations and lack the motivation. According to Omrod (2014) learning is affected by motivation and behaviour and how motivation directs behaviour towards a particular goal. How determined students are to strive for their goals with regards to their learning, are driven by their level of motivation (Maehr & Meyer, 1997). A student’s motivation is also a determining factor in how much effort they put into completing tasks and what they hope to achieve at the end. Their mindset in completing the tasks are also determined by their motivation for learning. Some students make be very enthusiastic to complete the task set whilst others may be lacking interest. When students are motivated they have a greater interest in activities and are more determined to complete the activities and have improved cognitive processes. They also have the ability to determine if the consequences of their actions are reinforcing or punishing and performances are improved.
Six years ago, I was asked to manage a client retention team working at a superannuation fund. I had been working as a call consultant within this same team for two years prior. I was the most experienced consultant in the team and my results showed I was achieving 130% of target, the remaining five consultants were averaging 50% of their targets. The five-other staff were very inexperienced, total time spent in the team tallied less than 12 months. My manager expressed concern that my output would drop because of my added responsibilities, I acknowledged this would happen. I believed in time would more than triple any shortfall from my own output.
Why do people explore the unknown? Research explores that the operands of curiosity and exploration are motivational drivers. Motivation can be defined as the arousal, direction and persistence of behavior. (Franken, 1994) Motivation is an internal state or condition that activates behavior giving direction towards one's desire or want. The motivational drive is a basic or instinctive need associated in the effort of behavior directed towards a goal-oriented cause. Curiosity is central to motivation for exploratory behavior. Curiosity has been referred as a "passion for learning" and a motivational drive in approaching a characteristic form of behavior in exploring the unknown in acquiring new learning.
This research will modifies and integrates the motivation model, self-determination theory (SDT) (Deci and Ryan, 1985) and technology acceptance model (TAM) (Davis, 1989). This research will find the impact of extrinsic and intrinsic motivational factors on trust. The report will determine whether the extrinsic motivational factors and/or intrinsic motivational factors increase or decrease trust to adopt internet banking. People who are living in low income and developing countries such as Pakistan, Bangladesh and India have to deal with many problems such as poverty, corruption and weak legal structure, all of these problems will lead to distrust in their lives. Similarly, the technology that deals with finance and money is going to be difficult to adopt by people who lives in low income countries due to lack of trust. Trust on internet banking system and security has to be developed in order for the people to adopt internet banking systems. Trust can be developed if the financial institutions works on extrinsic and intrinsic motivational factors which will ultimately helps the banking industry to gain trust of older customers of using and experiencing benefits of internet banking.
Motivation can be defined as something that drives us to behave in a certain way. It can be argued that much of the behaviours we inhibit today are a direct product of our ancestors from the past environment of evolutionary datedness (EEA era). These human motives came about due to our ancestors needing such traits and motives to consolidate their survival and thus, adapting in order to do so. In order to understand how the evolutionary perspective has had an impact on human motives, it is important to discuss the key traits that have been a product of adaptation and why this happened millions of years ago.
The restaurant I currently work for is an unstructured small barbecue place, I have been working there for over five years. The lighting is just perfect and there are several televisions with different channels so the customers have more than one thing to watch. The restaurant is smaller compared to other barbecue restaurants, customers dine in- or take their food to go depending on their preference. Most enjoy dining in, others not so much. The wait staff consist of a triad which is a group of three people and the cooks consists of a dyad which is a social group of two people. In this restaurants environment people feel loyalty to one another called in-groups and others feel antagonisms and those are called out-groups. Therefore, wait staff to wait staff would be in groups while wait staff and cooks would be out-groups.There are various conflicts with the restaurants environment between the cooks and the wait staff when it comes to tips. There were patterns of bad behaviors regarding the proletariat.
The topic in the workplace that I have chosen to discuss is that of motivation in the workplace. Problems of motivation can cause performance issues, which cost businesses thousands of dollars each year (Nordmeyer). Low motivation delays employees from completing their work and causes many mistakes made within the workplace (Nordmeyer). The definition of motivation is the processes that account for an individual’s intensity, direction, as well as persistence of effort, towards attaining a goal (Robbins, p. 175). Motivation is a big issue for many employers when it comes to keeping their staff motivated and happy at work. When an employee is unhappy, they tend to be unmotivated. Many individuals are motivated by different things within the workplace and one deterrent can be when an employer is hostile towards their employees or has a lack of respect for employees. Another factor which may lead to unmotivated employees is when a company shows a lack of appreciation to an employee as well as gives off the attitude that the employee needs to bend over backwards for the company but the company does offer incentive to do so or understand the needs of the employee.
Before delving into the topics of motivational theories, the affects of motivation, and motivational tools, etc., it is important to first define motivation and explain why the subject of motivation is so important in the organizational setting today.
Motivation is one of the most discussed topics in the present era’s organisations, especially since renowned psychologists like Maslow and Herzberg are dedicating their efforts to understanding it. Companies are investing a significant amount of resources in improving productivity in order to maximise profits. One of these important resources is of human nature. In order to get the very best out of employees, some motivational approaches need to be used. But what is motivation and how do I successfully motivate? I will try to relate one of my personal experiences with a friend to some of the most influential motivational theories. After introducing my story and making a definition of motivation I will address the ideas of Taylor,
