In chapter one of Clarkes book, Cyber War, he stated that the five take aways from the first generation of the cyber war were from many years of first-hand experience. The first being that cyber war is real. Second, he states that cyber war happens at the speed of light. Third, he claims that cyber war happens at the speed of light. Fourth, that cyber war is global. Lastly, Clarke stresses that cyber war has begun.
There isn’t much doubt currently that cyber war is fake. Hence, cyber war being real is a realization that Clarke wanted others to become aware of. As scary as that sounds, to add even more fright, this is one of the deadliest types of warfare in history other than a nuclear war. Which means that since this could happen in seconds, there is no way to call back an attack once its been sent. Therefore, understanding when to use this offensively is just as important as understanding when bombing a location is. When Clarke says that cyber war is global, he means that it can reach all corners of the world. If there is a location on the network, then it is able to become a victim of cyber war. That implies that there is no place to hide from this weapon. On top of that, it is able to reach you at anytime. Hence, nations such as North Korean are safe in the respect that they are off the network. With cyber war, nations are able to skip the battlefield. Gone are the days where troops line up across from each other hoping to do damage to the other. Clarke explains that people, industries, governments, companies and organizations can be possible targets and are vulnerable to these attacks.
