The article “Not in my fridge” by Jeffery M. Smith elaborately discussed the health hazards of genetically modified (GM) products. This article has opened my eyes and revealed my ignorance of how unmindful of what I have eaten for years. I was very alarmed by many of the things I have learned in this article. After learning the side-effect of GM food, I was certainly concerned for our health. Moreover, learning that the biotech company’s strong stand in advocate of GM products as well as the United States governments and the Food and Drug administration (FDA) cover up of serious safety issues of GM highly disturbed me.

GM foods are in the middle of many controversial issues; primarily these are addressed by conflicts over the relative pros and cons of GM foods. Major biotech companies like ‘Monsanto ' and ‘Cargill ' are promoting GM foods by focusing only on their beneficial aspects, giving least importance to their negative effects on safety, environment and biodiversity. On the other hand, governmental regulators and nongovernmental organizations, along with some scientists, are strictly opposing this type of blind promotion of GM food by enlightening the people on their negative effects The controversies associated with GM foods include issues such as safety, environmental benefits and risks, biodiversity, and ethical and social considerations.GM foods are implicated for adverse human health risks like people being allergic to it, environmental hazards such as development of super weeds, and pesticide and antibiotic resistance in disease causing organisms. The concerns regarding the health risks of the genetically engineered food came to light in the early 1990s. At this point, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) was tasked with advising the public and the public regarding the health risks of GMO foods. However, the White House was bent on promoting the GMO foods and thus staged a conspiracy for FDA to falsify the information and claim that GMO was similar to conventional foods pertaining the health standards (Smith, 2007). This was contrary to the suggestions by many FDA scientists that GMO foods could be having serious health risks that could not be easily detected and thus called for further research in future. Afterward, the biotech companies were found guilty of hiding very vital information regarding the health impact of GMO foods. The health concerns were based on the fact that GMO foods had traces of bacteria and viruses forced into their DNA something that has never been in the human food supply (Swanson, 2014). The research that followed should that GMOs poses huge risks to the health of the consumers including allergies, toxins, nutritional problems, and new diseases. Some of the health conditions correlated with the GMOs is the autism.

A new kind of foods called the genetically modified foods has been creating a quiet revolution in the American market for the past several years. Scientists are able to produce these new foods by transferring genes from one organism into another across species boundaries. This new technique has been developed to improve the shelf life, nutritional content, flavor, color, and texture of foods. Since 1994, about 45 genetically modified foods such as tomato, corn, soybeans, canola, and potatoes have been marketed in the United States. About two-thirds of foods that are processed in U.S. contain genetically modified ingredients. So, we the people are consuming these foods without realizing the fact that they are not produced naturally.

Whether or not to require labeling of GM foods is a major issue in the persistent debate over the risks and benefits of foods crops that are produced using biotechnology. Bills requiring compulsory labeling have been introduced and proposed in different levels, but not evenly implemented. Some of the common genetically engineered crops include soya beans, canola, corn and cotton. The US Food and Drug Administration policy on the labeling of GM food requires labeling is the food has significantly distinct nutritional property (US FDA par 2). Further, labeling is required if the GM food product includes an allergen that consumers may not expect to find in such a product, or if the product contains a toxicant that is beyond acceptable limits (US FDA par 3).

By the year 2012, over 70 percent of the processed foods in the U.S can be linked to genetically modified organisms, or GMOs. Despite this strong dependency on the manipulation of genetic material, there are many questions concerning long-lasting impacts such food could bring. The government of the United States of America should enforce stricter restrictions on the consumption, production, and availability of food products containing genetically modified organisms. Genetically engineered foods have detrimental impacts on the environment, are linked to large, monopolizing industries, and do not reduce world hunger.

With the two sources, I will provide the necessary information my audience needs to understand the health risks behind GM food along with the potential ways to counteract GM food, such as labeling before I attempt to present my claim to my audience. Lastly, in a source by Hiyam Al-Rousan, et al., will provide information that GM food is everywhere. Although we can pass a law to label GMOs, it would still be possible GM toxins and chemicals would still exist in label non-GM produce without a proper monitoring policy that checks if the labels on food are correct. All the sources will give more reason to why my audience should believe my claim and to continue

Food is everywhere. It is an integral part of society and is a major part of everyday life. We plan our days around mealtimes, pack snacks for work and school, and visit the grocery store at least once a week. However, even our best, well thought out efforts to achieve a healthy lifestyle leave us mostly in the dark about what we are really putting into our bodies. GMOs, Genetically Modified Organisms, are organisms that have been bioengineered, planted, and sold to the public as food. These organisms are unnatural and have proven to be harmful. Unfortunately, the labeling of foods containing GMOs is not government mandated. Monsanto, the largest GMO producing conglomerate, will go to all lengths to convince the public that their product is safe and does not need to be labeled for consumers, despite the fact that countries around the world have stood up and refused to sell their products to their citizens. Unfortunately, the United States is not only not among these countries, but the government has shown little care for the global issue. Everyone has the right to know exactly what they are putting into their bodies and feeding their loved ones. For this reason I will be exploring how, with the existing research, GMOs are FDA approved, as well as how this relates to Monsanto’s fight against GMO labeling.

Making them safe to eat and no studies were required to test the safety of these GM foods. The reason for this, the FDA official in charge of promoting GMOs was the former attorney for Monsanto, one of the biggest biotech companies that made huge profits. After the official was removed from his position in the FDA, it was found that the FDA scientist had actually warned against the use of GM foods because of their ability to create hard to predict side effects such as new diseases, nutritional problems, and allergies. These scientist pushed for long-term safety studies but were rejected. GMO foods have become overpopulated inside of grocery stores. These foods that are against the natural way of producing food have been forced upon the shelves and consumed by most consumers. Consequently, the United States does not make it mandatory to label our food as a GMO or non-GMO. Our government continues to force the consumer to eat GMO foods that might possibly change the genetic and chemical makeup of humans. Since the government funds and controls these modified seeds, and because the consumer is not educated enough about the potential risks about the foods in which they consume, they continue to pollute their bodies with the GMO foods that are being forced on the supermarket shelves across the country.

GMO has been present in food and America has consume it more than 15 years and debate that it has no evidence to cause harm to consumer, however, this was not convincing that it will not cause harm. Some studies done in animal shown that GMO cause damage to the immune system, liver and kidney, but more studies is need as well as labeling is need to allow consumer to know what it’s in their food. According to the article, many company that opposing the GMO labeling is from company that manufacturing GMO such as the Coca-Cola, Monsanto, PepsiCo, Kraft food and etc. In general, the use of GMO is claim to reduce the pesticides use, but it has increase the use of herbicides that could be potential of harm to consumer in increased risk of non-Hodgkin’s

Nowadays, several countries like America and China accept Genetically Modified Food (GM foods for short) as an achievement of cutting-edge biotechnology. They believe that this new kind of foods are safe, even there is not many evidences to support their opinion, or imagination. For me, it is madness that to try to send people food which even themselves don’t know much. We must keep those GM foods away from our plate until we know what it is and decide to take the risk.

The use of Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO’s) is global, includes plants, animals, microbes, medical, drug treatments, plastic development, oil spill remediation products and usage has markedly increased over the years (Goldbas, 2014; Mueller, Jafari & Roth, 2016). GMO’s involves genetically deleting, adding or changing the organism’s genetics (Goldbas, 2014). The most well-known GMO’s are in food and medicine (Goldbas, 2014). My thoughts are that I am naïve, historically trusting of the government to protect my food/medicine, perhaps, to a fault because, on a daily basis, I do not think about if there is GMO’s in my food or not. I trust the USA government protecting populations food/medicine more than other governments but I know that our governmental protection on GMO’s is not perfect either because there is minimal regulation.
