“While a manager relishes his position at the head of the group, leaders often stand within and behind their followers, acting as a critical crutch to propel everyone towards greater good” (Beninato, 2016). Despite the stark contrast between Doctor Beninato’s corporate realm of dental firm management, and the educational realm which Doctor Theodore Burk, a biology professor at Creighton University resides within, the values of leadership expressed in Doctor Beninato’s wisdom mesh closely with those held by the biology professor. Amongst the numerous parallels in both men’s leadership styles and beliefs, however, a disconnect is apparent in the manner through which both leaders interact with and handle follower’s failures, providing evidence …show more content…
This is significant to note, and most likely explains Doctor Beninato’s approach to follower failure at Premier Dental. Unlike Doctor Burk, who often is faced with “the difficult task of telling individuals they are not cut out for the career path which they have had their heart set on for most of their life” (Burk, 2016), Beninato is often able to dance around this direct assessment of failure as he “tries to shift the follower’s failure into a you, not me break-up scenario” (2016). However, in Doctor Burk’s educational realm, as noted in the his previous quote, while unfortunate, often educational leaders are faced with delivering harsh and life altering news in times of follower failure. Addressing “individuals who simply won’t succeed at what they have set their heart on” (Burk, 2016), Doctor Burk becomes strapped with the enormous, unavoidable burden of communicating significant follower failures directly. Refrainment from close interpersonal relationships, is one method to reduce the doctor’s burden, as personal experience tells us that delivering harsh news to an individual is far easier when you do not share an important interpersonal relationship with them. It is perhaps not surprising then, that interpersonal aspect of leadership so present in Doctor Beninato, is conversely mostly absent in Doctor Burk. As the dichotomy of the significance of follower failure extends beyond just these two individual’s followers, though, it would hardly be shocking to see this incongruity reflected between all leaders within the corporate and educational realms
Leadership in a healthcare setting requires a great breath of knowledge specific to healthcare and but it also requires soft skills that can be translated to many other professional endeavors. This essay will examine the leadership style of a specific healthcare professional, the strategies and skills that she uses to motivate their staff members and the results or impacts of the application of the skills and knowledge of leadership. The interview of this leader allowed an insight into the inner workings of both the leader herself, but also into the challenges that her organization faces. A more thorough understanding of organizational leadership and culture in particular could benefit this leader and provide this leader with additional
Leadership is, and always has been, a vital aspect of social and economic constructs. It is essential to the survival of societies, industries, organizations, and virtually any group of individuals that come together for a common purpose. However, leadership is difficult to define in a single, definitive sense. As such, theories of leadership, what constitutes a great leader, and how leaders are made have evolved constantly throughout history, and still continue to change today in hopes of improving upon our understanding of leadership, its importance, and how it can be most effective in modern organizational cultures.

Being a leader is not considered a job or position. Becoming a leader is not a talent, job or position. Although, leadership can be rewarding and difficult at the same time. In today’s society, “the kind of leadership necessary to move social movements forward is very different from the type of leadership required in a military setting, especially on the battlefield. A more sharpened focus on leadership processes versus individual leader traits and behaviors deepens our understanding of the complexities and interactive nature of leadership” (Komives, Lucas and McMahon 2013, 46). My goal is to understand how to face the complexities in life as a leader to communities, universities, organizations, the workplace and the world. As a leader,
Joseph Raelin (2016), a Northeastern University professor of management and organization development, recently published the article “Rethinking Leadership.” He said, “Leadership is really not about the leaders themselves. It’s about the collective practice among people who work together— accomplishing the choices we make together in our mutual work” (Raelin,
If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader” (BrainyQuote). These wise words were spoken by President John Quincy Adams. When I first heard these words I immediately thought of my manager, Paige. She is the true definition of a leader. She has worked for numerous healthcare organizations over the years and through each company she had crafted her leadership style. She joined my company, Hanks Pharmaceuticals four years ago and in that time she has changed the dynamic and culture of 3 different departments. When she first came to Hanks, she was a manager in our onsite Pharmacy. She then volunteered to be a part of a program that rotates managers to different departments for a year at a
In Kouzers and Posner’s view, leadership is to mobilize others to get extraordinary things done; and it is not about personality but it’s about behavior.
Leadership and management for many go hand in hand, and may be perceived as one in the same. In the book titled, The Servant (1998), James C. Hunter challenged this mainstream view, and literally turned this concept, which so many are coached on, upside-down. The notions of what characterizes a virtuous leader, as well as what it means to serve others, are the primary focal points of Hunter’s book. He did an eloquent job of revealing his theory concerning effective leadership by using an allegorical approach which, made the content easier to digest and much more personable. The Servant deeply resonated with me, and I gained significant value from the attitudes Hunter presented which, I can apply to my schooling, personal life, and future career paths. I was also able to discern what I felt to be applicable elements regarding the mark of a worthy leader, and arrived at my own theories.
Dr. Tim Clinton (n.d) asserts “John Maxwell Definition of Leadership – “Leadership is simply influence! If you have influence in the life of another individual – “You are a leader!” (p. 2). Leadership coaches ask clients critical questions and are a source of encouragement with realistic goals that propel clients to a promising future. Bill Coleman came to this coach for intake as a potential new client seeking a leadership coaching relationship. Bill referred to this coach by an old client, who achieved tremendous results from their leadership coaching sessions. Bill is twenty-seven, not married, however, in a serious relationship. Additionally, he is currently the senior salesman for Rid Alert a fast paced and upcoming pest control company in the Chicagoland area for the past four years. Bill earns over a hundred thousand a year in salary and commissions. However, Bill expresses unhappiness in his job position and has an inability in finding contentment with his current standing at Rid Alert. This coach notices from this intake that Bill is an excellent communicator, however, undervalues his influence among his subordinates and upper management. Upper management at Rid Alert recognizes Bill’s talent, but often point out Bill’s lack of leadership in the sales department. Bill endeavors to establish a cohesive presence amongst the sales team, although the sales team motivation appears money driven; the leadership and comradery are lacking.
