Drugged Driving and On-site Testing with Digital Devices to Gather Evidence
There is a great need for drug tests that can be used to test for marijuana because of states with marijuana being legal and used for recreational purposes. Alaska, Colorado, Oregon and Washington are all states where marijuana is legal for recreational purposes. Because marijuana is legal there needs to be a test like alcohol sobriety test to prove that a person is endangering the lives of others while driving. The drug test need to be able to be done on scene and done quickly, so that the person can be taken off the street and put into jail an keep other people from being harmed.

This means that the THC is diluted and when the 11-hydroxy-delta-9-THC enters the blood and much less THC reaches the brain. This causes it to take longer for psychological effects to occur to the person ingesting marijuana. THC is sored in the fatty tissues in the body and then releases 11-hydroxy-delta-9-THC slowly. Hydroxy-delta-9-THC has a fifty hour half life because how slow the absorption in the body. The short term effects began to take place more slowly. Between a hour and thirty minutes and then after the short term effects happen then it continues until four hours. It would be hard to find out if the drug was ingested or smoked without a blood test (Kapur, …show more content…
The Draeger Drugtest 5000 is a saliva test. This drug test works by having a sample collector, which in turn works by having a large plastic handle and ninety degrees from the handle is a swab that can swab the inside of someones mouth without touching the saliva. After this the sample collector gets the swab, then the swab is put into a vile and then the analyzer machine and it detects what kind of drug it is and if it is positive or negative (NHTSA, 2003.
Fingerprint devices is another drug testing method that uses a machine to scan your finger. When you finger is scanned the machine tests your metabolites that have THC in the fingerprint sweat. This is another test that can only detect what type of drug and if it is positive or negative. This can be used on-site together this information (Intelligent Fingerprinting,
Even though people who drink regularly feel there is no issue with driving after one or two drinks, people should think about the severe consequences that come from driving under the influence. Numerous people die every year due to intoxicated drivers. There are ways of avoiding these life changing risks. Appointing a designated driver before drinking or calling an uber is a smart way to plan ahead. Unfortunately not everyone takes the initiative to prevent these avoidable circumstances.
I think new ways to test for marijuana can most definitely help impaired drivers receive the penalties they deserve. Contrary to that, research has shown that most cases where drivers choose to drive under the influence of a substance often go unnoticed, resulting in more crashes and more fatalities. New ways to test for the drug in drivers will only work if roadside testing stops were on almost every street, however that is just plain unreasonable and
What are the different drugs that can be detected by this hair follicle drug test?
Since drug testing will continue to be implemented around some type of consistency should be established. A company should only be allowed to drug test in the following circumstances; pre-employment, reasonable suspicion or just cause, post-accident, randomly among all of the entire staff force, periodically with jobs who carry weapons or are in charge on saving lives, like doctors and nurses, and when an employee, who took a leave of absence to seek help for a drug abuse problem. With more and more states legalizing the recreational use of marijuana the states and federal laws need to be re-established. Do some companies allow the use of marijuana while others do not? There needs to be consistency across the board for every employer, whether it be a government job, private employer, and part of a union. People who are in jobs that carry weapons, operate large machinery, or are in a health care field should always be tested for drugs periodically and randomly. Their job duties entitle them to work with other and around other people. A person’s negative life choices should not have a causality on other civilians. If a police officer is on LSD and pulls his gun and starts shooting it, there is a major problem. It is important that these people are not impaired while working on the
Our right to privacy, right to be informed, and our right of protection again illegal searches and seizures are always going to be a top of continuous debate. Schoonmaker is a freewill employee applying for a job with a freewill employer. Schoonmaker always has the right to go elsewhere if he declines to submit to a drug screen. Certainly an agent of such an organization as the Drug Enforcement Administration should expect to be drug free and be willing to verify this through testing; but that isn’t enough. What is enough support for testing, however, is legal president through cases such as Skinner and more importantly in this matter Von Raab. In the case of Von Raab it was found testing to be lawful to insure national security.
"Every day, 28 people in the United States die in motor vehicle crashes that involve an alcohol-impaired driver. This amounts to one death every 53 minutes (Impaired Driving)." These intoxicated drivers are not only risking their own lives while unconsciously driving, but they are jeopardizing the lives of several other innocent people. As the number of deaths and injuries due to DUI-related accidents is increasing in America, more organizations are forming awareness programs, protests, and public conventions to decrease this rate and demonstrate how much of a negative impact drunk drivers have on themselves and others. Ecovia, a company in Brazil, supports this movement by creating ads that utilize visual illustrations to show that multitasking
Marijuana, like alcohol, undermines the driver's judgment and consequently is unnecessary. Marijuana is the most illicit and illegal drug that is being used and detected in drivers that are impaired, detected in fatally injured drivers, and detected in the crash victims of a motor vehicle, that is why our concern for drugged driving, which is driving under the influence of drugs that acts on the brain could “impairs one’s motor skills, reaction time, and judgment, is so important and crucial” (Drugged Driving). Also, according to the article, it states that, “it is illegal to operate a motor vehicle if there is any detectable level of a prohibited drug, or its metabolites, in the driver’s blood” and “studies conducted that 4-14% of drivers
When a person smokes marijuana, THC rapidly passes from the lungs into the bloodstream. The blood carries the chemical to the brain and other organs throughout the human body. The body absorbs THC chemicals slower when a person drinks or eats it. Effects are felt 1 hour and sometimes longer, which is why it is so dangerous because unlike other drugs you feel the affects almost immediately. With digesting marijuana there is no telling when your high will hit you.
Hair testing is to see if drugs are being used. Schools have been using hair drug testing since 1997 to help students stay drug free. Cocaine, marijuana, opiates , methamphetamine, Ecstasy, Eve and phencyclidine can all be found in a hair follicle during a drug test. A standard test of 1 ½ inches of head hair cut close to the scalp can take several months to detect drug use. It takes approximately 5-7 days from the time of drug use to actually grow in the hair. The amount needed is about as thick as a shoelace. A hairbrush cannot be used for hair drug testing. Hair products do not have an effect on results. When someone has hairpieces or extensions, they are required to use natural hair, nape hair, or body hair. Hair drug tests can be used
Why did I check the specific numbers regarding drink driving? This is because of a recent incident that happened to my parent’s friend Mr. X.
Every year there is thousands of car crashes throughout the nation, a large portion of them are caused by impaired driving. When people hear the term impaired driving, most think driving under the influence, DUI, but in reality there’s many factors that can cause it. Some of the factors are having alcohol or drugs in your system, medical conditions, mental or physical disabilities, or even driving when you’re sleepy. An officer’s job is to detect people on the road who are impaired and to get them off the road. An officer must be able to detect a DUI from observing an individual.
People who use it for medicinal purposes – the effects can take up to 30 minutes after consuming it to notice the effects. People that consume too much THC might feel anxious, nervous, fearful, hallucinations, phobia, and may even lose the sense of their own identity. The THC can linger in the body for days and even weeks but generally lasts longer when consumed in foods. The THC in Cannabinoid affects the brain’s memory, coordination, concentration, movement, intellectual, and time sensitivity. Using Marijuana can damage a person’s thinking and capacity to understand and complete difficult tasks. THC can also cause a person to have delayed response reactions which is one of the reasons why people who use Marijuana should not be behind the
However there may be a solution to stopping deviant drunk drivers. If it is impossible to get rid of a problem, we will simply stop making the problem worse. One thing that can be done is to reach out to communities around the nation. Community organizers everywhere are making an impact on the people in the neighborhoods of each city and has even gotten the N.H.T.S.A.’s attention. “The first examples of such organizations were the Alcohol Safety Action Projects (ASAPs), funded in 35 communities by the NHTSA” (Voas and Fell 7)
DUI, have you ever heard of it? It means Driving Under The Influence. Driving under the influence is when you are drunk person is trying to drive a motorized vehicle. Lots of people try to do it every day, a huge number of teens try to do everyday they either die or get into serious trouble doing it.
After reading all about the increased dangers that statistics are showing with drugged drivers, there was two thing that stood out to me, whenever it discussed the growing use of marijuana and the rising risks of fatal crashes it always stated fatal crashes involving drivers who had recently used marijuana, key word recently. It never gave a specific time, as in recently like that day, that week, that month. We are unaware of how recent the usage was and how it affected the crash based on when the last time they had used the drug was. Not to mention, how do we know that the two even have any correlation with each other? It is stated that the states who legalized marijuana have increased in fatal crashes but how can we be sure marijuana is the cause of these accidents, we really don’t, and it could even just be a coincidence because maybe more people are just using the drug now because it is legal in their states.
