Email to Coworker: Management vs. Leadership There are many individuals that confuse the roles and responsibilities of managers and that of a leader. While managers and leaders both have many common characteristic, the roles and responsibilities within a company are defined differently. The purpose of this paper is to go into detail about these different responsibilities within a company. A leader can be both formal and informal, for the sake of this paper it will be more geared towards explaining a more formal leadership role. Additionally a personal experience will be included to assist in this understanding.

When a manager is guiding employees in completing tasks managers may need to provide additional training. It is the job of the manager to decide whether or not more training is needed and make contact with those who can provide additional training. Management may also need more assistance when completing tasks. Management will then need to hire more employees. Mangers are responsible in the hiring and firing process. This part can be the most time consuming part of fulfilling a goal (Weaver, n.a). Management styles are different according to the individual or determined by the company itself. Autocratic style of managing is one of them. In this style a manager does not take into consideration any ideas or suggestions of subordinates. Managers that convey this kind of style rely only on the ideas of his or her own and employees are to carry out tasks dependent upon the exact directions of the manager. Most of the time employees lack motivation to work with these kinds of managers (Management styles-Meaning and different types of styles, n.d.). Paternalistic style of managing is different than that of the Autocratic style. In paternalistic style of managing, the manager will take into consideration of subordinates suggestions and feedback. Policies and how things are directed are decided upon the best steps to benefit the employees as well as the organization. Employees
A management style is an overall method of leadership used by a manager. There are two main management styles: Autocratic (leader makes all decisions unilaterally) and Permissive (leader permits subordinates to take part in decision making and also gives them a considerable degree of autonomy in completing routine work activities). Combining both categories with democratic and directive styles give four distinct ways to manage:
An authoritative leader addresses the end but generally gives workers freedom to innovate, experiment and take risks. The authoritative style works best for organizations that are off track, it helps in creating a new course and fresh long-term vision. The affiliative style strives to keep employees happy to create harmony among. The style has a positive effect on communication. People who like one another a lot talk lot. They share ideas, inspirations leading to flexibility, innovation and risk taking. This style should only be employed when trying to build team harmony. The democratic style allows leaders to build consensus through participation. By spending time getting people’s ideas, a leader is able to build trust, respect and commitment. This style works best when a leader is uncertain about best direction however, it does not make sense if employees are not competent. Pacesetting is a leadership style that expects excellence and self-direction. The leader is obsessive about doing things better and faster, and expects the same of everyone around
Democratic is more my style but I will step into other styles should the need arise, however democratic style
For some reasons, the managers’ positions have been seen in a negative way for many years. However, this does not change the essentiality of this position in any organization, especially in business set-ups. There have been a constant confusion between the role of leaders and managers, and what should be clearly established is that these two roles do not share the same meaning. Being a manager does not guarantee that one is already a good leader. However, leaders can be effective managers. This only means that in order for managers to be effective and avoid negative feedback, they should have sufficient knowledge and
Managers perform many functions and play many roles. They are responsible for handling many situations and these situations are usually different from one another.
Autocratic Approach: Autocratic leadership gives a positive belief about the updates about any policies. However this kind of approach is not highly regarded by many of the working environments. This is due to the amendments being brought into use prematurely for the uses to access them. This approach of leadership and management may be viewed as being too authoritative.
Managerial style can be define as the characteristic way an organization plans, execute decision relating to employee and management that ensure to enhance growth and productivity of the organization. Every country have it unique managerial style of running it organizations. what apply in one country may necessarily not apply in another country; hence we call it differences! Management is the same but the culture could differ significantly. This depends on the country in focus. A cultural case file emphasis is on Japan vs the U.S. These two countries has a unique way of managing organisations to achieve maximum result, but in very different style. Keep in mind that the culture of each country varies and it 's a factor that drives how management style is applied, and understanding this cultures will help appreciate the diversity of it organization 's activities.
Roles of leadership produces change among the movement, establishes direction, aligning people, motivating and inspiring. The roles of both leadership and management have impact on each other and can inspire and make one advance into something they did not believe they have in themselves. Functions of management are making sure employee’s time is managed, jobs assigned are structured, and problems are solved with a prominent solution. Leadership functions are providing a vision one can build up in one’s mind that evolves into a big picture, building goals and teams to brooding ideas, and motivating people that energize them to be motivated to want to work. These roles are similar because leaders can manage and visa verse. Leaders lead people while management delegates roles to lower
Leadership is an incremental component that centers the existence, survival and functioning of any group or organisation. Indeed, the organisations recognise that their success is highly-dependent upon the quality and effectiveness of this dimension. There are two main functions that leaders are bounded to perform. The first is central on accomplishing the task towards the attainment of goals such as initiating actions, keeping members attention on the goal, clarifying issues, helping the group develop a procedural plan, evaluating the work done and making expert information available. The second is on developing member’s feelings to maintain the strength of the organisation. Leaders are expected to keep interpersonal relations, arbitrate excuse, provide encouragement, give chance to divert, stimulate self-direction and increase interdependence among organisational members.
A manager is a person who supervises the work of others so that the assigned goals and targets are achieved in the most effective, efficient, and well-organized fashion (Daft 2011). A manager makes decisions for his organization, organizes, motivates, and leads its human resource, and controls its business affairs so as to achieve efficiency and superior operational performance. All the functions and responsibilities of a manager overlap each other at all the managerial levels within an organization (Basefsky, Maxwell, Post, & Turner 2004). Leadership is one of the core functions of a manager. This leadership function essentially requires the leader to be specialized in all other management functions in order to lead his followers effectively and efficiently (Leatherman 2008). Therefore, it is strongly believed that a person must have to be a good manager in order to become an effective leader. This paper critically examines this statement in the light of relevant literature; including books, research papers, and journal articles.
There are several different types of management styles, which can determine your outcome. Autocratic, Laissez-faire, democratic and bureaucratic are all different managerial styles. From my quiz results I displayed a democratic type of management. I allow employees to make contributions to the decision-making process even thought I have final say in the choice. I offer clear guidelines and explain how procedures should be followed. The majority of my employees are satisfied, skilled at their jobs and motivated to perform. This is because of this management style, as it promotes creativity and diversity in the working
Managerial styles vary from company to company and can influence the morale of the employees as well as its customers. It is important to apply
Management style is a characteristics way of making decision and relation subordinates. In my opinion, Ivana’s management style is more to autocratic because she makes decision unilaterally and without much regard for subordinates. Autocratic management is a form of management where one leader typically has complete control over a project. In a small business environment, the owner may implement this form of leadership when the operation is relatively small and he has a limited number of employees. Autocratic leaders typically make choices based on their own ideas and judgments and rarely accept advice from followers.
The autocratic management style is also known as the authoritative style where managers tend to be driven by the achievement of results and the desire to make things happen. The managers who follow this kind of style have strong personalities, which allow them to perform and demand the best performance from their workers (Bono & Heller, 2006). This management style involves the managers making decisions on their own and this allows the decision making process to be very fast. The managers are also very tactful as they provide a firm but fair approach providing direction in the company. The autocratic management style leads companies to achieve the stated results at the expense of the relationship between the staff and the managers. This management style usually leads to a high turnover rate among employees.
Paternalistic management approach is a father-like treatment but gives a certain amount of freedom. It is a type of leadership style that focuses more on the welfare of patients but gives a firm decision for everyone. It is a modification of an autocratic management yet it provides patients feedback. A typical paternalistic management approach gives exact details as to why there are certain actions to be taken in managing patients in a certain way. It has been practiced for so many years by many medical professions. Although, this approach still finds an
