NIGERIAN SOCIETY OF ENGINEERS,
2013 Mandatory Continuing Education Workshop
(13th – 15th March 2013)
An Engineer is defined as a person whose job involves thinking out a problem and providing solution in advance. It includes but not limited to designing and building engines, machines, roads, bridges, etc or a person who is trained to repair and control engines. An engineer can be Electrical, Mechanical, Civil, Materials, Electronic, Petroleum, Software, Chemical, etc. Engineers are also found in military barracks because they design and build military structures and equipments, so they can be soldiers as well. We also

Moreover, all engineers must play a much stronger role in the public policy process to provide the right incentives for industry and others to move on sustainable path so that engineers can be encouraged and supported to design sustainable technology for the purpose of economic development that benefits society in a holistic way now and in future. As Don Roberts advocates, we must become better informed of the interdependence of environmental, economic, health and social issues, inform others and become leaders, otherwise the agenda will be set by others who neither know the benefits nor the limit of technology in a sustainable modern society
Sustainable economic development relies on technological change to achieve its aim but will governments take the tough steps that are required to force radical technological innovation rather than the technological fixes that have been evident to date? Such measures would require a long-term economic cost while industry will readjust. It would appear that so long as sustainable development is restricted to minimal low-cost adjustment that do not require value changes, institutional changes or any sort of radical cultural adjustment, the environment will continue to be degraded
to possibly resolve the business problem should be provided. To do this you should outline the
Engineering was newly introduced to the United States in the late 1700s. The jobs were minimal and fully educated men were few and far between. America had a shaky start in the engineering field, but the profession quickly picked up speed. From 2009 to 2013, engineering degrees grew twice as fast as other disciplines (Bidwell, “The number of STEM degrees earned in the last 5 years grew exceptionally”). Everything from the most basic principles of engineering and the minutiae of an engineer’s daily routine, to complexities such as payment and respect for the profession have changed drastically since the 1800s due to more people becoming open to the ideas of innovation and diversity in such an integral field. Engineers are the life-blood of
The job of the engineer can be best described as a presenter in a techno artistic field. The job requires the technical capabilities and
Engineering is an application of science and mathematics which uses the sources of energy in the nature for the benefits of human beings. Engineering is a vast fields and with the help of its innovations the lives of ourselves become easier to a greater extent. We can see the application of these innovations in many areas ranging from manufacture of a safety pin to that of multistoried building. As stated by the American Engineers council for professional Development (“Engineering” 2015) “ Engineering is the creative application of the scientific principles to design or develop structures, machines, apparatus, or manufacturing processes, or works utilizing them singly or in combination; or to construct or operate the same with
The role of engineers is to improve the quality of the lives of the people, by the formulation of technical solutions to issues facing the society. Although the prevalence of the engineering works with physical artifacts, the majority of the work lies within the intellectual domain. Further, engineers offer technical possibilities, which work to optimize the social, environmental consequences and opportunities to the society. The hallmark of a professional engineer is to apply and make informed, sustainable and responsible decisions. Engineers ought to uphold and own the impositions and the consequences within considerable ethical limits of the possibilities produced. Therefore, prerequisite understanding of what the community has encountered in the past and continued to endure formulates the basics within which an individual should approach particular instances. The history of the treatment of aboriginals in Australia expresses the rationale and the manner in which an engineer should interact and make decisions about the indigenous people. Engineers should have the ability to discern the particular setting of the people, before the imposition of ideas and proposals to the local communities, and principally, the aboriginals. Engineers ought to understand the implications of their actions and impactions, as well as aim to rectify the problems and issues. Engineers should build on their critical competencies of comprehension, conceptually based understanding, and discernment as well as knowledge. The vital skills of engineers often allude to the theoretical knowledge on how engineers ought to conduct the affairs. However, engineers should have the ability to understand the social settings about the issues which people have faced, and may continue to impact in the
An engineer is required to have an adapt knowledge of all the the equipment available and the best application for them. This includes being able to use equipment such as power amplifiers, various consoles, patch bays, speakers and foldbacks, microphones, compressors, gate equalisers and FX(reverb, delay, chorus).
The main point of chapter 1: Engineering at Dordt: Redeeming Creation, is that God is recognized over all areas of life. That God gave humans the ability to develop and unfold the creation as their service to God. I completely agree with this DLVK. I think that engineering is a big part of developing the creation God gave to us. However, I think that in developing this creation through technology is has to be used in the right way. We were meant to rule this earth, but at the same time serving our leader. The creations we develop have to be made in the image of God.
Developments in technology are important to this topic and can help improve conditions. Elizabeth incorporated Cohan’s technology idea into the energy crises pointing out that economies are largely based on coal mining as we say in the movie about Ordos, China. New technology can help replace non-sustainable sources of energy like coal mining and lead to new forms of alternative energy. Elizabeth showed a chart of the prediction of 2050 where solar power and wind are the future of energy production for the United States. Her chart implements how new technology is projected to replace the non-sustainable forms of energy extraction. New technologies would also help economy to depend on multiple forms of energy not just one like coal. On the other hand the sources of funding for these technological improvements are hard to come by because of their expense and risk. The money required to develop these technologies comes from individuals that support idea of less harmful production. Time to develop technology improvements can take years to prefect and put into market place. Companies also would not have to use this technology in there production and the types of technological advance are not controlled. The car industry is the model example. Cars have become more efficient over the years due to improve technology and now electric cars are appearing again. However, electric cars are just old technology renew and they still rely on coal. Fuel-efficient cars just improve on a system that is not sustainable. Even thought technology is improving in the last couple years the pollution issue from these products has yet to be answered. The pollution problem from these has yet to be fixed and the world is still face with the same
By participating, Callon elaborates, these engineers constantly consider various hypotheticals regarding society which brings them into the realm of sociology. As such, they should thus be referred to as engineer-sociologists (Callon 77). Given this definition, engineers can be considered sociologists in that they must hypothesize and evaluate the various effects their technologies will have upon society. For example, engineers who work on creating efficient wind turbines must consider the benefits of these turbines, such as the generation of clean, renewable energy to be distributed to cities, as well as their detriments, such as considering how the choice of area in which these turbines are stationed affects the neighboring community in terms of noise pollution. The introduction of new technologies can have a lasting effect on our society, such as in the cases of the car, airplane, and personal computers. As such, it is paramount that engineers must constantly be learning about others to determine how to implement their ideas in a manner that most positively affects
It is almost impossible, today, to look around you and not see the products of engineering, pretty much regardless of where one may be. In this way, advancements in engineering and its various branches have clearly allowed humanity to develop in immeasurable ways or this would not be the case (Frank C. Whitmore, 1979). However, those who do not have much knowledge of the background processes behind this infrastructure may not realise its impact as deeply or may not realise the impact of engineering at all - despite modern society’s fundamental dependence upon it (National Academy of Engineering, 2001).
Engineers are viewed as the backbone of modern society. The innovation and the creativity that drives our society forward are inspired by the teachings of engineering, whether it is transporting on a bus or making a phone call, the work of an engineer is experienced. Engineers satisfy both themselves and humanity which is the reason for my passion for engineering.
As mentioned above, it is very important for engineers to understand their own responsibilities. In 1960, the Conference of Engineering Societies of Western Europe and the United States of America defined "professional engineer" as follows:1 “A professional engineer is competent by virtue of his/her fundamental education and training to apply the scientific method and outlook to the analysis
Obstacles had never been obstructing my effort to succeed in life. As an engineer to be, it is important to me to be prepared for the hurdles in the real world. The world nowadays needs a person who could compete and has great abilities to stand on the same level as others. Multiple skills and critical opinion of an issue are essential for an engineer to jump into this challenging career. For me, a strategic planning and full preparation need to achieve the aim of being an expert engineer.
