For instance, it is apparent throughout the novel that he is brilliant, inquisitive, and, self-governing. However, just as though he had an ever growing mind, he also was afflicted with a somewhat egocentric, yet lion-hearted attitude. Of course, all characteristics that do not blend well with the glorification of the state over an individual are not at all welcome in Equality 7-2521’s city, and therefore make him a rather formidable threat. Much like the rest of his peers, he is restricted to what the Council of Vocations declares him capable of managing –in this case, a Street Sweeper. As long as he could remember, his desire to be free to study alongside “The Council of Scholars” had kept him up at night, yet his previous vocation prohibited that. The stubborn and passionate boy defied society’s norms and escaped after being discovered of his transgressions. Without any care in the world apart from his love for “The Golden One” and his recently invented lightbulb of sorts, he rushed into the Uncharted Forest with a realization of his
The novel of Anthem, written by Ayn Rand, contributes to controversial subjects in society that are still relevant today. Some issues addressed by Rand in her novel include: equality, social hierarchy, individuality, and government. Throughout the duration of reading Anthem the issues in which Rand makes relevant are not obvious, but more so discussed through conflicts and situations that the main character, Equality 7-2521, encounters. Although many of the altercations that present social issues are provided by either other characters singlehandedly or by a group of the characters in alliance, some of the main issues that arise in this novel are presented within the main character himself.
The story of Anthem takes place in dystopian future in which freedom and human rights have been obliterated. Equality 7-2521, the protagonist, is a street sweeper who finds a tunnel where he conducts his science experiments which are considered a sin. Throughout the book we see him change and discover how capable he is through a multitude of literary devices. In the novella , Anthem, Ayn Rand utilizes vivid imagery and a profusion of diction to frenetically emphasize the idea of love.
So today I will be telling you if Equality 7-2521 from Anthem by Ayn Rand will be following the 4-Way Test. There are four question to go with the test. They are “Is it the truth” “is it fair to all concerned” “makes better friendships” and “is it beneficial to all”.

The story Anthem takes place in the future, however, there is no technology to support that era. This book displays no flying cars, or jet packs that most people today would associate with the future. Instead, society has regressed to a time where not even a light bulb remains. As the story follows Equality 7-2521 through his transition from a simple street sweeper, to a free man with his own family, the oppression and draconian laws of this new society is documented by Equality.
government. In the novel, the government assigns you your career based on how you succeed in school. Equality 7-2521 was assigned to be a street sweeper. Although Equality 7-2521 wasn’t satisfied with what he had gotten he had pretended to be pleased as everyone must accept it. It was against the rules to think on your own and for him to say in his mind, “We would accept our Life Mandate, and we would work for our brothers, gladly and
In the novella Anthem by Ayn Rand, Equality 7-2521 has changed how he views the leaders of his society, and now is very critical of the leaders, referring to them in moral terms. He lives in a very collectivism society, where his leaders control the aspects of the citizen’s lives. The citizens are characterized by a number rather than a name. All the brothers of this society are not allowed to speak to or look at any one of his brothers or women. They follow a repeated schedule day by day, following the totalitarian rules given.
“We are one in all and all in one. There are no men but only the great WE, One, indivisible, and forever” ( Rand. 19). In Equality 7-2521’s life, he was forced to be equal to the people who were around him. He couldn’t be different from society, because it was a sin. Equality was born with a curse which made him different from his brothers. He was cursed with the quick learning ability. He tried to be like other people who were not as smart as him, but somehow his plan never succeeded. Although he tried to forget his lessons, it always came back to his remembrance. Anthem interested me when Equality 7-2521 met Liberty 5-3000, how he discovered electricity, and how he wanted his rights. Society wanted the people including Equality 7-2521 to be equal. Even though Equality 7-2521 went through some hard times, he finally got his rights at the end of the book.
“It is a sin to write this. It is a sin to think words no others think and to put them down upon a paper no others are to see. It is base and evil. It is as if we were speaking alone to no ears but our own. And we know well that there is no transgression blacker than to do or think alone.” (pg. 1)
Equality 7-2521 was not like any of his other brothers he was different and being different in his society is a bad thing he was over six feet in height and was smarter then most of the other students in his school. To them if you are smarter that is against the law because if you think you know something that man doesn't already know then it doesn't exist. So for this equality was lashed(another word for being
The book Anthem is taking place in a collectivist society. Evidences that proves this existence includes laws within the society, similar clothings, same opportunities, and “group before individual” thinking style. Its people have routine rules depending on their age. There are leaders and then, there are its followers. Its followers are wired to believe that it is a sin to think about yourself before anyone. They are to replace the word “I” to “we”. Their futures are not in their control but the leaders. In a way, it’s the same as being imprisoned in a labyrinth. Equality 7-2521 is the main protagonist and he is 21 years old. He is different from his brothers because he thinks in an individual way. He did not report the secret tunnel he found.

In the society of Ayn Rand’s novel Anthem, it is a crime to show any individuality, and it is a reminder of how some people fear being themselves in today’s society. In the novel Equality 7-2521, the main character, knows that they are different from everyone else they know. However, they are forced to hide it because they know that they will be punished for these thoughts. When Equality 7-2521 has these thoughts, they must say to themselves, “We are one in all and all in one. There are no men but only the great WE, One, indivisible and forever” (Rand 19). Equality 7-2521 is forced to be a follower, which I can connect to my own life. Today, it can seem like it is wrong to be a certain way or to have certain interests. Because of this, many
At the beginning of Anthem by Ayn Rand, Equality 7-2521 states that it is a sin to write his individual thoughts in secrecy. Later in the story, especially in the past few sections, he has completely changed his view of his individuality and past actions against the society of his brothers. Equality 7-2521 changes from being a scared slave to his community and lifestyle, to being Prometheus, a confident man working to change the world for “I” and against “we” with his plans for the Uncharted Forest. Prometheus’ view of society is correct, opposed to how he thought when he was Equality 7-2521. He approaches this new prospective and favors it because it has given him the most, and possibly the only, happiness that he’s ever had in his life.
The character I have chosen from the Ayn Rand novel “Anthem” is Equality 7-2521 7-2521, a street sweeper who lives in a collectivist society, which he tries breaks free of. This character is a kind of misfit because he tries to be separate from the society in which he lives in. In this collectivist society, things not done collectively are considered wrong, and everything is done for their brothers and sisters. Equality 7-2521 can be related to many different inventors and scientists who were way ahead of their time, and their creations or inventions were not accepted in their society.
