A common misconception in the eyes of the educational world is that online courses are easily passed with minimal effort. In reality, online courses are held to the same standards as in-person courses and require unwavering self-motivation. Professor Rick Rivera expects these higher-learning criterion to be met by the students taking his online English 1C course. In the “Getting Started” module of Rivera’s online course, he provides information regarding his standards by requiring his students to remember that an online course is still a college course, that being actively involved in the course everyday is important, to recognize the qualities of a good online student, and to stay in contact if problems arise.

In conclusion, learning online comes with the unique perk of flexibility and pitfalls related to flexibility. As It goes in depth of ways to help employees by simply motivating them and how that could be the biggest difference of how they perform in their job. As opposed to just focusing on work related tasks and not understanding an employee’s mental approach. The way the article tries to explain it, is by emphasising on 6 factors. Which is communication, professionalism, management style, training, recognition, and fun. Each factor is thoroughly detailed and explains how to effectively use it to help the employee be more successful and how that will ultimately help with the business as a whole. As well touches on that being a good person is the main objective and everything comes after. As creating a friendly work environment where everyone feels included is the root of a successful company.

Motivation is literally the desire to do things. It’s the different between waking up before dawn to pound the pavement and lazing around the house all day. It’s the crucial element in setting and attaining goals – and research shows you can influence your own levels of motivation and self-control. (Psychology Today, 2014) An individual, while capable of determining their goals should align professional goals with the organization; in turn this organization will need to determine the motivation level of their employees through evaluation of the goals outlined by the employee and how to plan to attain those goals. Edward Deci and Richard Ryan (2008) examine in their self-determination theory people’s life goals or aspirations, showing differential relations of intrinsic versus extrinsic life goals to performance and psychological health. They discuss further that when people are controlled, they experience pressure to think, feel, or behave in particular ways. Both autonomous and controlled motivation energizes and direct behavior and they stand in contrast to amotivation , which refers to a lack of intention and motivation.

In today’s society, so many people are continuing their education beyond high school. We realize that in order to make a decent living, a degree is most likely a requirement. In some cases even a bachelor’s degree is not enough to qualify for many positions. Nevertheless, thanks to technology, we now have the option to learn online or in a traditional classroom setting. There are very few differences between the two, and students need to understand that as much time and energy will need to be devoted to the online courses as on a campus. “A 2010 meta-analysis and review of online-learning studies concluded that online learning was as good as or slightly more effective than traditional face-to-face instruction” (Mendenhall, 2011).

My motivation factors are extrinsic and intrinsic. Not only do I wish to obtain exceptional grades and receive a bachelor's degree, I also wish to learn and challenge myself. What is most important to me is possessing autonomy over my time and with whom I spend it, however, there is still work to be performed in that area. I enjoy managing how my time is spent, which is one of the reasons my classes are online. Additionally, I prefer to be graded on my own efforts, rather than as a group.
