Flag of our Fathers really motivates young people to have courage although the action that they are doing is very dangerous. Being involved in a battle is very risky and you can lose your life. Franklin Sousley, Harlon Block, and Michael Strank did not survive the battle however they had great courage and was very valor. If those who fought in the battle of Iwo Jima didn’t have such great courage, the battle would not have been successful.Seeing the flag raisers risk their life definitely motivated lung men to have valor. The real heroes of Iwo Jima were the guys who didn't come back and gave their lives for their country. John Bradley says to his son James, ”Your teacher said something about heroes... I want you to always remember something. The heroes of Iwo Jima are the guys who didn't come back.” James had asked his father to give him a speech about heroes to his classroom. John claimed that he did not attend any of the reunions because he would not be able to be himself since he has been basically the only one called out for his role in the photograph for raising the flag. James felt as if his dad did not feel like a hero after all. The true
Iwo Jima was known for one of the most bloody battles in not just the Marine but American history too. The battle began on February 19, 1945 as part of the campaign of the Pacific theatre, and lasted for thirty-six days. Around twenty six-thousand Marines were wounded, which caused Union losses during the battle at Gettysburg. Near the beginning of summer of 1944, American B-29 bombers were ruining the islands. “Iwo Jima proved itself an indispensable asset to the Pacific command.” “Thousands of fighters took off from its runways, and this ‘stepping stone’ served as a staging ground for countless Allied advances.”
On January 1992 the NAACP put in affect a boycott on South Carolina to pressure the state to remove the Confederate flag off of its Statehouse in Columbia. The boycott is what initially brought life to this issue. The NAACP’s removal request is based on the fact that they, the anti-flag groups, claim that the meaning of the Confederate flag is one of hate and discrimination. On the other hand, there are other groups that believe differently whom are called the pro-flag groups. They claim that the Confederate flag is a sign of heritage and should stay on South Carolina’s Statehouse. Anti-flag articles are more likely to be found published in well-known Liberal magazines, when credible pro-flag articles were hard
The movie “Flags of our Fathers” is based on the book written by James Bradley, the son of the flag bearer John Bradley. To have so much confusion and misinformation behind what was believed to be a victory for the American forces which was the platform to show the contrasts between the realities of war and this image of war that was used as if it was
The fight for control of Iwo Jima lasted thirty eight days. Over that course of time the U.S. lost almost six thousand Marines with another eighteen thousand men wounded. The Japanese however lost around twenty one thousand men. This was the only battle during the war with Japan when the U.S. suffered more casualties than the Japanese. Being one of the bloodiest battles of the war, the taking of Iwo Jima served as a valuable lesson for the upcoming Okinawa campaign. In the weeks following, the battle fell under heavy scrutiny from the press and the public. Many viewed it as an unnecessary fight and loss of
he Battle of Iwo Jima was one of the bloodiest and fiercest battles of the Second World War in which the US Armed Forces captured the Iwo Jima Island from the Japanese. More than 6800 American servicemen lost their lives in the battle and thus the battle has come to known as the deadliest battle in Marine Corps history. Iwo Jima was an island strategically positioned and highly fortified as its three airfields were used to stage attacks on the US at the Pacific War. It was therefore Americas target to capture the island and use it to stage attacks on Japans mainland and use the airfields as emergency landing strips for the US Navy planes damaged during war. According to The Washington Post a small group gathered on Thursday February 18th
The battles of Iwo Jima and Okinawa were two of the most important American operations in the Pacific Theatre against the Empire of Japan during World War Two. The goal of the two operations was to secure strategically important islands close to Japan to use for bombing campaigns. The battles for Iwo Jima(February-March 1945) and Okinawa f(April-June 1945) killed hundreds of thousands of soldiers and civilians and helped to win the war for the United States.
On December 7th 1941 Japanese forces launched a sneak attack on a U.S. naval base. Hundreds were killed and of the 8 ships on station only 3 were not destroyed and even those were badly damaged(Naval History And Heritage Command). This attack was not only bad for America's military, but her people as well. This raid was a defining moment in history, it had a profound affect on America and her people. Causing abruptly, the joining of america in the second world war.
Iwo Jima veteran, Hershel Woodrow Williams remembers, “The flag going up on Mount Suribachi, on Japanese territory, was something that we as marines really needed.”
Fred Barbash, wrote “Does first flag symbolize "exclusion and hate," as some say?,” published in 2016 by the Washington Post, and argues that the first American flag could stand for racism and bigotry. Barbash, uses logos, pathos, and ethos to inscribe the racial tension growing around the first American flag controversy. Barbash uses rhetorical devices to really clasp the audience and to attract a variety of people.
When you see the American flag, what is the first thing that pops into your head? Is it a war? A relative? A political leader? What? For me, I usually think of the Star Spangled Banner. I grew up on a military base in Germany. If the flag were being raised or lowered, you would see soldiers, and even civilians, standing at attention, saluting the flag. In a parade, as the flag was being carried in front by one of the brigades, everyone held his or her hand over his or her heart as the flag passed that person. Even in the theaters, before the movie would start, the Star Spangled Banner would be played while scenes of American flags in battles and peacetime were on the screen and everyone would stand, either at attention or with
The author, Tom Brokaw; a part of of The Greatest Generation, has plenty of experience around the military. His fathers, Red Brokaw, was the typically role model for his son. “Between the ages three and five [Tom Brokaw] lived on an Army base in western South Dakota and spent a good deal of my time outdoors in a tiny helmet, shooting stick guns at imaginary German and Japanese soldiers” (XVII). In addition to his father being an inspirational imagine in his childhood, it also included memorable images of the Fourth of July and the moment after his father returned home from the service. The military was all around Tom Brokaw and inspired him to honor the veteran’s lives as well as sacrifice during the war. From a young age good morals and values were influencing Brokaw, much like many other members of The Greatest Generation.

Doing this report what I learned was Francis has been designed the American Flag 28th times in different turns. In the 1777 and 1960 congress changed the shapes and designs and also arrangement of the U.S of American Flag and allowed stars and stripes to be added to reflect the admission of each new state. In Sept.11 1777 the, new stars and stripes formed part of the military at the battle of brandywine. What I also learned was Stars are a symbol of the heavens and the goals to which human kind aspires. Stripes are a symbol of rays of light from the sun. Over years the American Flag has been changed 27 times mostly. In 1777 the colors of the American Flag did not have a specific meaning. But the Great Seal did have a specific meaning.
“Thanks for the ride Dad,” I said as I grabbed my flag bag, my bright orange water jug and proceeded to slam the door shut. It wasn't too cold out, considering it was almost November. I was able to wear a t-shirt and leggings and still comfortable with the quickly dropping temperatures. I dropped my flag bag into its usually spot, between the white parking line and our junior captain’s bags. I was one of the first ones there, which was actually very unusual considering I was usually late. On the occasion of me being so early I decided to practice a part of the show that I was struggling with. I grabbed the flag specific to the part of the show that i needed to work on and I began throwing and dropping and throwing and catching and then throwing
The most significant thing that I learned while reading the book , Flags of our fathers, is to always have someone's back. Weather it be a family member a friend, or someone you have never even met, we should always have their back. I learned this important lesson from one of my memorable scenes in the book. The scene was when Jack Lucas, a fourteen year old boy, jumped on a grenade so his fellow men would not die. This act of selflessness has taught me to always have the back of the person next to me. Also what comes with having someone's back comes trust. Humans are taught to trust. You trust your friends and family with everything. However when a man whom you have barley ever talked to says, "I got this," when fighting in a war. Do you
