Fort Sumter: Events Leading Up To The Civil War

The American Civil War has become a point of controversy and argument when discussing key events in shaping America. The arguments that arise when discussing the war tend to focus on whether the Confederate was constitutionally justified in seceding, or whether the North had the right to prevent the secession. However, when discussing the America Civil War and the idea of separation, it is important to be mindful that separation did not simply end at the state level. Letters written by Jesse Rolston, Jr. and Jedediah Hotchkiss portray two significantly different attitudes toward the war, despite the fact that the writers both fought for the Confederate States and give accounts of the same battle, one of which ended in the Confederate’s favor. When examining the documents, both writers express different viewpoints on life on and off the battlefield. This significant difference represents a division amongst the Confederate army.

The Antebellum period, also known as the plantation era, which was happened before the civil war but after the war of 1812. According to history.net, it was characterized by thee rise of abolition and the gradual polarization of the country between abolitionists and supporters of slavery ("Antebellum Period | HistoryNet", 2017). We also saw during this time thee shift in manufacturing from the south to the north and the beginning of the industrial revolution. The economy was booming in the south due to the demand of cotton and implementation of the cotton gin which made manufacturing cotton easier ("Antebellum Period | HistoryNet", 2017).

Fort Sumter is located in Charleston, South Carolina. The fort is in Charleston's harbor. The fort was not even complete when war broke out. This was a big turning point for the United States of America. It separated the north from the south and in some cases it separated families. This war would impact how the United States saw slavery. It is the most deadly war that the United States has every seen in its history.

On November 1863, Confederate authorities chose Andersonville as a prison site for the Union soldiers. Camp Sumter was one of the biggest prisons for the Union soldiers during the time of the Civil War. On February 1864, all the Union soldiers were placed at the camp without any shelter or supplies. When supply was finally provided, the supply still wasn't enough for the Union soldiers. The Union soldiers outweighed the supply even when they had enough the supply. On December 20th, 1860, South Carolina seceded from the Union. During this time, 85 federal soldiers under the command of Major Robert Anderson were stationed at Fort Moultrie, which is also located near the Charleston Harbor. To protect the federal strong hold in the south, Major Anderson moved his troops to Fort Sumter in the dark of night on December 26th. When the people of Charleston heard the news of the invasion on the fort, it did not sit well with them and other Southern states. Fort Sumter was built to protect the harbor in Charleston, now it was a military threat.

During the time of the Civil War there were many battles going on off of the battlefield that placed the United States of America in great turmoil. While the literal war was being fought throughout the country there were still political, ethical and emotional battles taking place. A big question of the Civil War was about its origins and if there was more than just one cause for the rebellion of the South. Many issues at hand during this time are: slavery, westward expansion, and states’ rights. Westward expansion and states’ rights tend to be two sides of the same coin while slavery is a big issue in and of itself.
