The history of the gay rights movement goes as far back as the late 19th century. More accurately, the quest by gays to search out others like themselves and foster a feeling of identity has been around since then. It is an innovative movement that seeks to change existing norms and gain acceptance within our culture. In Stephanie Fairyington's essay, “The Gay Option”, the author expresses regret about the framing she used to explain her sexuality when coming out as a homosexual to her mother. She told her mother that her homosexuality was a result of biology and not choice. As a result, Fairyington's mother began to refer to her sexually as a birth defect. This in not the outcome Fairyington desired. She explains that her intent was to gain acceptance from her mother not pity. That experience lead her to conclude that the best course of action for the LGBT community should be for them to turn away from using biology to explain their sexuality but to look instead to an argument of choice. This book Pray the Gay Away by Bernadetta C. Barton discusses about certain areas in the United States called Bible Belts were they have made absolutely no progress in securing rights for gay people. They lag behind the rest of nation were people are accepting homosexuality (Pray the Gay Away 15). Barton argues that in small towns were Christian institutions serve as a foundation for both passive and active homophobia in these areas (Pray the Gay Away 19). This article is related to the play because the two dominant religions discussed in the play was Judaism and Mormonism and both religions strongly oppose homosexuality and this lead to homophobic attitudes and themes within the play.

The Gay Option is an excerpt from “Choice as Strategy: Homosexuality and the Politics of Pity,” written by Stephanie Fairyington. Stephanie Fairyington is the Cofounder and Editor for a freelance New York journalist, which means that she has a lot of experience in writing and is well credited. This excerpt was written from Fairyington own experience as part of the LGBT community and her take on the outward view on gays. Fairyington starts the excerpt in a very strong way, although it at first seems somewhat contradictory to her claim that being gay or liking the same gender, is not a biological illness but a conscious choice. The article excerpt talks about the way that the LGBT community is viewed by Conservatives and people in Politics in general. People in the LGBT community feel forced to stick a hand out for pity, as this is the only way they’ll be accepted. Farrington's writing suggests that the people of the LGBT community are not even accepted as much as tolerated by something that is considered to be out of their control.

“Sex was something mysterious which happened to married couples and Homosexuality was never mentioned; my mother told me my father did not believe it existed at all ‘until he joined the army’. As a child, I was warned about talking to ‘strange men’, without any real idea what this meant. I was left to find out for myself what it was all about.” Mike Newman, who was a child during the 1950s America recalls how homosexuality was perceived during the post-World War II era (F). This sexual oppression was not only in Newman’s household, but in almost everyone’s. It is hard to challenge what is seemingly normalized in society. Especially when looking into the realm of gender and sexuality, the male and female gender accompanied by heterosexuality is often just accepted and deemed as a social norm. Social institutions such as marriage, health-care laws, and the economic system benefit those who act within the heteronormative behaviors and appropriate gender expression. The gender binary, though, is far from accurate when assuming personal identity. If someone follows the social script of the femininity, he or she is expected to be female and possess female anatomy. The same goes for men: if he or she expresses masculinity he or she is expected to be male with male anatomy. Anything outside of this expectation is deemed socially unacceptable and subject to backlash. With the strong ties Western society has to the gender binary and appropriate gender roles, it is impossible to picture anything else. The Fa’fafine in Samoa, however, present a great challenge to the norms instilled in society.

The main argument is about the problem posed for the modern viewer by the eroticized body of the political ruler, which wasn't a problem for the ancient - Mesopotamians; that sexuality was inextricably linked to potency to male vigor and manly vigor to dominance and authority. In other words, Irene Winter's thesis is about sexuality signifying rule in ancient times.

The repeated emphasis on honor, wisdom, and virtue is a recurring theme throughout greek homosexual relationships. The archetypes of the two male partners: the younger lover known as the ‘beloved’ (eromenos) and an older lover (erastes). Cantarella asserts that “love relationships, were also, in fact, intellectual ones that in some ways saw the beloved as the disciple and the lover as the master of life, ethics and civic education” (Cantarella, 8). It will come as no surprise that such relationships were especially prevalent among the upper class and were considered a denotation of wealth and station.

With love, this affection is placed on display; and the displayers lost the conviction of such acts, and the shame behind what they felt for each other. Now such lifestyles can be seen broadcasted during television parades and conventions, thus coining the terms, “gay pride” and “lesbians lovers“.

One of the minority groups that came into prominence during this tumultuous time were homophile activists who advocated for an assimilation of gays into society, and relied mostly on pacifist tactics. It wasn’t until the summer of 1969, in a Greenwich Village tavern, where a series of protests served as a catalyst to inspire gays to join together in the fight against inequality through more radical means; thus setting into motion the beginnings of modern American LGBT rights activism and Gay Pride.

I will be writing about George Chauncey’s Gay New York. In this text, George Chauncey seeks to restore that world to history, to chart its geography, and to recapture its culture and politics by challenging three widespread myths about the history of gay life before the rise of the gay movement. These include the myths of isolation, invisibility and internalization. The homosexual community is considered a subculture to the heterosexual community, which identifies as the dominant culture. George Chauncey wants to know why the dominant heterosexual culture often misinterprets the heterosexual subculture. He also talks about the assumptions the dominant culture carries about sexuality and culture. I believe there are two reasons the dominant culture misinterprets and make assumptions about the homosexual community; these two reasons consist of religious beliefs and social stigma of the dominant culture towards the subculture.

Jeremias (pronounced ‘hE-rE-Me-as) grew up in a working class environment, one in which functions primarily on ideals of patriarchy, and authoritative styles of leadership from parents, teachers, and coaches. These ideals are what manifest the local system of valuation in environments such as this one, and as such they are what shape the attitudes about paramount matters, such as ethics, religion, politics, relationships, and society at large. As a result, Jeremias once spent some time in his adolescent years pursuing conservative Christian beliefs, a mindset inspiring him to safely render homosexuality as immoral and therefore not entitled to having a status equal to heterosexuality. In spite of being a high school dropout, Jeremias felt strongly that he did indeed know what is objectively right and objectively wrong about matters of fact within the social sphere. Fast forward, seventeen years where Jeremias is now an adult, and is now a college graduate, in addition to pursuing an advanced degree in philosophy. It follows that Jeremias no longer accepts any of the so called values he once did accept, albeit without question. Jeremias now fully endorses equality for homosexuals; in fact, he once received a serious reprimand from a faculty member at his conservatively bent undergraduate institution for defending the idea of equality for homosexual couples from a self-professed evangelical peer, whilst in class.

“The Charter of the United Nations encourages ‘respect for human rights and for fundamental freedoms for all without distinction, while the Universal Declaration of Human Rights states ‘Everyone is entitled to all the rights and freedoms set forth in this Declaration, without distinction of any kind,” (Gary, J, 2012). Even with the guidance provided, many members of the UN still had laws that criminalized homosexuality and some that had laws that could warrant the death penalty for being a part of the LGBT community.

In this country there is a flawed assumption that gay people enjoy the same civil right protections as everyone else and there are a lot of stereotypes about gay relationships. Living as a gay individual in this country can be extremely overwhelming and scary. When it comes to marriage between gay couples, controversy is bound to turn up.
