Gen. George S. Patton was one of the most intelligent military leaders and soldiers in American History. Audacious, unorthodox, and inspiring, he led his troops to very god victories in North Africa, Sicily and on the western front. Nazi Generals admitted that all American field commanders he was the most feared and scared everyone. To Americans he was worthy of such strong cavalrymen as Philip Sheridan, J. E. B. Stuart and Nathan Bedford Forrest. His great qualities as a soldier were matched with one of the best personalities of his period. After the first world war was over he served with various tank units and then with the cavalry at various posts within the United States. He graduated from 3 schools which included, the Cavalry School, the Command and General Staff School, and The Army War College. As he was on duty at the office of the Chief Of Cavalry in Washington he was sent to the aide of the Prince of Wales on one of his visits to the country. He taught the prince how to play a game called "craps" and was very popular in this country. In the summer of 1940 Patton was a colonel. He went to Fort Benning, Ga., for his duty as commander of a brigade of the Second Armored Division, which was then being formed. In April, 1941, he became its commanding officer and made the division famous as a strong and rough-and-ready outfit. Being promoted to corps commander, he was the one who organized the Desert Training Center in California. North African invasion was planned, and General Patton was placed in command of the American forces scheduled to land on the Atlantic coast of Morocco.
