In a recent article found on Facebook, David Gutierrez described how Thierry Vrain, a former Genetically Modified Organism scientist recently changed his mind on how he personally feels about genetically modified organisms. Previous to this article Vrain was for GMOs and was taking on many experiments on GMOs. However now, he says that he rejects a previous statement of his that said “biotechnology companies engineered crops, have no impact on the environment and of course that they are safe to eat” (Gutierrez, 2016). More interesting about this newspaper article, is that Vrain also now claims that GMOs cause damage to bodily organs in the human, such as the kidneys, liver and spleen. (Gutierrez, 2016). I chose this article because I wanted to see what the real science behind GMOs is, since most crops are being engineered by GMOs. I also wanted to examine why after so long Vrain changed his mind on what he thinks of Genetically Modified Organisms. Since GOMs are becoming more prevalent worldwide, I wanted to investigate what the actual science is behind them and if they in fact are good or bad for human health. In an article written for The New England Journal of Medicine, Philip Landrigan M.D., and Charles Benbrook Ph.D. discuss just how GMOs affect humans and the science behind them. Landrigan and Benbrook (2015) state, “GMOs are not high on most physicians’ worry lists”. This quote gives a sense that GMOs are not a concern to the majority of doctors. By looking at the
The article opened by portraying a future world where natural seeds were virtually extinct. This frightened me because the idea of solely relying on GM food seemed unhealthy and unsafe. Referring back to the article, research conducted by feeding rats GM potatoes resulted in massive systematic health problems. Health issues such as damaged immune system, higher blood sugar, and pre-cancerous cell growth frightened me. The rats’ response to GM food demonstrated exactly what will happen to us humans if we were to consume the exact GM foods. Though I was alarmed by the cause of the GM food, I am not surprised that GM products result in horrific amount of health hazard. It is clear that anything artificial would contain different chemicals and is highly susceptible in causing undesirable reactions to living things. Hence, it worries me that the use of GM product,
In 2015, Tim Anderson, a PhD researcher, wrote “GMO Foods are Unsafe”, an article which perhaps sheds light on the mishandling of genetically modified foods, including the lack of testing of said food products, as well as the potential hazards posed to humans and the environment. In the same year, Genetic Literacy Project’s web editor, JoAnna Wendel, wrote a contrasting article “Genetically Modified Foods Have Been Studied and Found Safe to Eat”, and voices her disgust over the false information that constantly belittle GMOs. She believes the allegation that little evaluation has been accomplished to monitor and ensure the safety of these genetic modifications is based on frantic opinions and not accurate facts. Although their positions appear to utterly oppose one
GMOs, (genetically modified organisms) have been a topic of interest in the social eyes for years. Since they’ve been created, many people have voiced and written about their opinions on GMOs, and whether they are dangerous or not. Created to expand the genetic diversity of crops and animals, many don’t know whether GMOs are good or bad, and neither do researchers. Though there hasn’t been any evidence claiming whether GMOs are good or bad, it has certainly not stopped the public from creating their own opinions. Since no one knows the truth behind GMO, it has opened a window of opportunities for companies including Monsanto to voice their support of GMO, while other companies like the Non-GMO Project voice their
Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs), have turned into an exceptionally questionable theme here in our reality today. GMOs are life forms that have been developed through a quality joining methodologies of biotechnology or genetics building. This is a moderately new type of science which permits DNA from an individual species to be injected into another species in a research center. This produces blends of plant, creature, microscopic organisms, and viral qualities that don 't show up in conventional crossbreeding systems or found in nature. GMO’s have been liked to several health-related issues, and should be banned by the FDA (Genetically Modified Organisms, N.D. ).
The human body is not designed to handle all the toxins that are put into GMO products, and as consumers, we should be informed of the potential harm we are putting into our bodies. Helke Ferrie, in his article “Evidence Grows of Harmful Effects of GMOs on Human Health” states, “…all modern human diseases are being caused by environmental toxins of our own making” (12), on the contrary, in the journal “GMOs – A solution or a Problem”, Mark Lynas claims that “… there has never been a single sustained health concern [caused by GMOs]” (132). Ferrie mentions multiple studies where GMOs have proven to “…increase the incidence of cancer, diabetes, hormone disruption, neurological, immunological and other metabolic disorders” (12). After mass amounts of research have been conducted to prove the dangers of GMOs, proof that has been gathered of the detriments genetically modified organisms bring to the human liver; researchers conclude, “… anything that upsets the liver must be… exceedingly
Over the past few decades a new controversy has arisen in the scientific community: should Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO’s) be used in modern society. There are generally two sides to this debate: one being in favor of GMO use and the other against it. Pro GMO activists believe that GMOs can help address hunger issues and help reduce use of pesticides/insecticides while Anti-GMO activists state that it is a threat to the agriculture industry, and should be banned. Both sides have several valid points, however GMO’s are even more complicated from initial glance, and may not be as dangerous as some believe.
These concerns are about the potential of illnesses GMOs could cause. An article observes, “In the 20-plus years on the market, GMOs have not caused or contributed to a single illness or death” (“GMO Myths Vs. Facts”). There have not been any traces of illnesses after multiple testing of GMO products. Since there are only ten commercially farmed genetically modified crops in the United States, the possibility of people getting a disease from them is rare; especially because three of the crops are mainly for feeding livestock. People have believed multiple problems are linked to GMOs. For instance, “in 2013, the journal food and chemical toxicology retracted a paper linked to herbicide roundup and round up-tolerant GM corn to cancer and premature death in rats… they found researchers had used too few rats… and the results were inconclusive” (Colbert, par. 16). Since the researchers did not have enough evidence, the possibility of the problem being GMOs are
“When you light a candle, you also cast a shadow.” – Ursula K. Le Guin. No matter what good some people believe they are doing, everything seems to come with a consequence, and the question is whether or not the good overpowers the bad. Many experts argue that Genetically Modified foods are actually beneficial to, not only people, but animals, plants, and the world overall. Some experts even state that, not only are they beneficial, but that they also protect the environment and aid food productivity. Most farmers actually recommend GMO’s because they are easier to grow, maintain, and tend to be more profitable; however, countless other experts have come to realize that GMO foods are untested, unsafe, and unhealthy. Studies indicate that
When it comes to the topic of whether Genetic Modified Organisms (GMO) are safe or not, most of us will readily agree that it has become an issue. Where this agreement usually ends, however, is on the question of is it really safe to consume them. Whereas some are convinced that GMOs are safe and improve the production of crops, others maintain that GMOs are not safe and should be eradicated. I disagree that GMOs are safe for human consumption because as a recent research has shown they can cause severe organ damage and fatal diseases. GMOs should be banned and remove from all food sources until they are proved safe for consumption.
Baked chips aren't the only ones that have fooled everyone. Seeing kids having goldfish crackers as a snack is not a surprise. Many of us suspect that goldfish are healthy because we see many kids always eating them. But don’t let their cute little fish shape trick you. In 2013, “Pepperidge Farm, the maker of goldfish crackers” was sued for labeling a lie on the boxes of goldfish saying that they were “natural” when in reality they were not. They assumingly thought that people still believed that vegetable oil was still healthy. When in reality, it is the “most inflammatory ingredient out there, full of chemicals, pesticides and rancid oils.” The worst part of all is that goldfish are GMO’s-genetically modified organisms. GMOs are toxic and allergic as well, and on top of that, GMOs were banned from being used in 30 countries and more. Goldfish also contain MSG. “MSG is an excitotoxin that damages your brain cells by means of over stimulation. It is used to enhance flavors in some processed foods and spices. Not only can this MSG damage your brain cells, but it can also lead to “learning disabilities and neurological conditions.”
When it comes to the topic of whether genetic modification are safe or unsafe for the animals, the environment and for human consumption, some of us will readily agree that they are in fact very dangerous for everyone. Where this agreement usually ends, however, is on the question of how exactly they affect everyone. Whereas some are convinced that GMOs are not safe for anyone, others maintain that they are not a hazard to anyone. I agree that GMOs are not safe because while doing my research I found concrete evidence that proves that they are unsafe for consumption. All production of GMOs should be discontinued immediately since they are a danger for our environment and for ourselves.
Meanwhile, a growing body of evidence connects GMOs with health problems, environmental damage and violation of farmers’ and consumers’ rights.
A concern that is growing is what we are eating and how it is affecting us. A lot of food is processed today, causing concerns about GMOs. GMOs stands for genetically modified organisms; this means a living organism’s genetic material has been artificially changed in a laboratory. GMOs are combinations of plant, animal, bacteria, and viral genes that do not occur naturally or even through “traditional crossbreeding” methods. Many people have questions and concerns about GMOs, and more and more people are starting not to like them. GMOs have taken over most of the US and Canada, many consumers are concerned with their safety of what they are putting in their bodies, and many are under the influence that GMOs are harmful because so many other countries have banned them or require labeling. Genetically Modified Organisms are often confused with hybridization and cross breeding. The differences are GMOs are forced together and include things that are not in nature, while the other two involve two related species being put together. GMOs are more controlled, direct, and specific. Genes are identified, isolated, copied, and introduced into other organisms. The biggest difference between breeding and GMOs would be genetic modification allows genes to transfer between species. GMOs are manipulating DNA, which many believe are harming our bodies; however, humans have been exploiting the creation of new biological variations for centuries, creating many combinations that would never
As GMOs are a fairly new invention in the scope of things and we have no real idea of the long term health damage being caused we need to be vigilant. Many effects from GMOs are just now being realized, bees and other beneficial insects are dying at alarming rates because of exposure to GMO pollen.A study showed a clear link between GMO plants and the use of Round-up which in turn was shown to cause bees kidneys to fail (Amos). Yet in another rats were shown to develop tumors at very high rates and earlier than they would naturally when fed on GMO maize (Séralini).Though the study was retracted the researchers said it was only at the insistence of Monsanto and they stand by their findings (de Vendômois JS).We know that Genetically Modified Organisms are bad for the environment, for many reasons. For instance when organisms are injected with the DNA of another organism it reduces biodiversity, and thus we run the risk of extinction of the original plant organism. Also seeds from GMO crops like Monsanto’s canola mix with weeds which then become herbicide tolerant, and can smother out good crops.
Much of the public concern surrounding the safety of GMOs stems from the process of actually creating them. This is admittedly not a natural process, which is a surefire way to raise critic’s eyebrows in doubting their safety. However, there is no evidence that supports these myths. The Committee on Genetically Engineered Crops, The National Academy of Science, and the Board on Agriculture and Natural Recourses all agree after extensive testing and observation that there is no additional harm in the consumption of GMO food. The research conducted in animal studies, as well as chemical analysis of the crops, show no indication that GMOs are negatively affecting human health. The next allegation hurled at GMOs is that they may have
