It is essential to have 501 © 3’s. 501 © 3’S play an important role within society today. When the U.S. government is not able to satisfy the needs of their people, for profit and nonprofit organizations come in to meet these needs of society so that they are content. One nonprofit organization that has helped people all throughout the world is the Goodwill of North Georgia. Before every for profit or nonprofit organization started, needs within society needed to be taken care of. This paper will be discussing the history, social problem, background of director, successes and challenges, and the effectiveness of the nonprofit organization the Goodwill of North Georgia.

Our country’s current economic crisis is drastically affecting not just individuals, but businesses and organizations as well, especially when it comes to those that are non-profit. Funding for necessary programs held by non-profit organizations, such as Moses Cone Behavioral Health, have been cut annually, making it more difficult for their institutions to prosper. Due to these substantial declines in donations and funds, local volunteers are needed now more than ever. I chose to volunteer at Moses Cone Behavioral Health Hospital to help combat this loss in funding.

The nonprofit sector in America is a reflection some of the foundational values that brought our nation into existence. Fundamentals, such as the idea that people can govern themselves and the belief that people should have the opportunity to make a difference by joining a like-minded group, have made America and its nonprofit sector what it is today. The American "civil society" is one that has been produced through generations of experiments with government policy, nonprofit organizations, private partnerships, and individuals who have asserted ideas and values. The Alliance for Better Nonprofits (ABN), located in the Regas building in Downtown Knoxville, exists to provide resources, training, consulting, networking, and standards of excellence for nonprofit organizations in the 25 counties of Upper East Tennessee (What We Do, 2017). The remainder of this paper will discuss the personal interaction I had with Alliance employees during a visit, as well as the services and opportunities the Alliance offers the nonprofits in the community.

The organization name changes along the way before officially named as Aloha United Way in 1974, and during the 1990s it shifted its focus from doing fundraising to more inspiring collective solutions to community problems. This is reflected in their mission that is, to build a stronger, healthier community by partnering with business, labor, government, and no profit organizations to deliver measureable and sustainable solutions. AUW mission, vision and core values are clearly outlined in their website.

Social entrepreneurship is gaining such strong interest in nonprofit world because of the economic challenges that have plagued this sector with cuts in philanthropic and government funding. According to Nash (2010) not only are there cuts, there are many organizations vying for the limited funding. Studies support, the attitudes in capitalistic America, and the ease of nonprofits to embrace this concept; evidenced by their ability to sell their once free services, to meet the demands of the consumer. According to the IRS (2010) nonprofits have increased their selling power on unrelated business income, to the tune of 184% increase, in a sixteen-year time frame. Of these many non-profits in the United States, many of them struggle to thrive and be successful with their goals. Charities rely on getting funds from many sources, and some charities struggle with money because of the fact they are heavily depending on funds from sources that may not be there one day. Charities have to meet certain requirements set by the IRS to have a non-profit status. Studies have shown that the rich are not donating to charity, although more and more of the youth seem to be donating. There are so many good reasons to donate to nonprofit charitable organizations, but still many organizations struggle to meet or succeed their goals.
