Social entrepreneurship is gaining such strong interest in nonprofit world because of the economic challenges that have plagued this sector with cuts in philanthropic and government funding. According to Nash (2010) not only are there cuts, there are many organizations vying for the limited funding. Studies support, the attitudes in capitalistic America, and the ease of nonprofits to embrace this concept; evidenced by their ability to sell their once free services, to meet the demands of the consumer. According to the IRS (2010) nonprofits have increased their selling power on unrelated business income, to the tune of 184% increase, in a sixteen-year time frame. This writer, believes these numbers are evidence which support this trend is
Since a non-profit organization provides community services without monetary profit, the external environmental conditions that exist outside of the non-profit significantly influence its growth and survival. Specifically, economical elements such as disposal income levels, unemployment trends, taxation rules, inflation, and cost of living may impact the likelihood of obtaining new donors or continuing donations from existing donors. In an economic climate of decreasing disposable income may result in decreased donations. Furthermore, increasing unemployment rates may increase the need for public assistance wherein the non-profit organization may find it difficult to obtain increased funding to provide their philanthropic services.
Throughout my career in the social sector I worked with a variety of for-profit companies; over the last few years I’ve noticed interesting trends. Corporations are changing how they structure and evaluate philanthropic partnerships and fewer and fewer organizations are opting to donate through traditional methods. Social entrepreneurs are even integrating philanthropy into their business models. Just consider, big names such as Toms and Seventh Generation and newer start ups like Bombas (a sock company that donates socks one-for-one for every pair they sell). One-time event sponsorship and foundation giving seems to be losing ground to newer, innovative community investment strategies. These shifts have encouraged non-profits, including

Social entrepreneurship which has been applied in so many different ways by so many different analysts that it’s depth of vast complexity is still being unraveled and it seems it is still in infancy. The nonprofit sector in America is a reflection some of the foundational values that brought our nation into existence. Fundamentals, such as the idea that people can govern themselves and the belief that people should have the opportunity to make a difference by joining a like-minded group, have made America and its nonprofit sector what it is today. The American "civil society" is one that has been produced through generations of experiments with government policy, nonprofit organizations, private partnerships, and individuals who have asserted ideas and values. The future of the nonprofit sector will continue to be experimental in many ways. However, the increase of professional studies in nonprofit management and the greater
A nonprofit organization (NPO), can be self-sustaining by adhering to some very simple rules. A nonprofit is described as an organization that “Operates for the common good and not for generating individual wealth: does not distribute its profits to individuals who control the organization such as its members, officers, directors, or trustees. While a non-profit organization can make a profit, the profit it earns must be used toward the core missions of the organization and not towards any personal benefits” (Bennett, 2013). One of the enormous challenges that a
In my opinion, the role of nonprofit sector currently in American society is to fill the gap between private companies and the government. The goal of private companies is to maximize the profit at a low cost in a short period of time, or to fulfill the demand of their customers and to improve the customer experience. However, private companies usually will not invest money to projects that with good meanings but do not generate proper profits. For example, helping children in the rural area to get health check or to get better education resources are meaningful, but also unprofitable to private companies. At this point, the government can finance these “unprofitable projects” and support the provisions. However, it is hard
Nonprofit organizations survive essentially on the various resources they are able to obtain. Money is obviously an enormous resource, as any organization needs money to survive. Money can come from various sources such as state and federal government funding and/or grants, donor cash, fundraising methods, donated products or services, and most importantly: volunteers. Volunteer labor makes up a total of one-third of the national income attributable to nonprofit organizations in the United States (Young, 2007).
I agree with you Kelsey. Social purpose ventures and non-profit ventures do not have to put economic profit at the top of their agenda, and I like your point that though they do not have to make profit, they must be “sustainable and scalable.” In the case, NCV also has to consider this point. That sustainable and economic circulation could be a great driving force for their future business, and they can be empowered by the reasonable economic
According to (Young, 2008) “A social enterprise is thought to be something new and something distinct from classical business and traditional non-profit activity, combining at different extents elements of the social purpose, the market orientation and financial performance standards of business”. When looking at starting up a social enterprise there are important points that need to be looked at the help ensure the enterprise is successful.
The social innovation school of thought emphasizes that viewing social entrepreneurship is establishing new and effective ways to address societal problems. Irrespective the method they adopt and the way they function, ultimately the thing that matters the most is the social value that they create. It is all about innovation and impact, and not about commercial success or entrepreneurship. Though income strategies and bottom line are important and key to sustainability, it can never be more important than the desired or intended social
Nowadays, social enterprise attracts increasing attention worldwide and there are also intense debate around the definition and nature of this new kind of business model. Some economics argue “Due to their dual social and profit mandate, social enterprises are unlikely to deliver commercially competitive returns without overly compromising their social goals.”
For years, non-profit organizations have helped solve complex issues. Non-profit organizations have been the foundation in many communities and develop individuals’ leadership and professional skills. The presence of non-profit organizations is paramount as they are agents of social change in the community. Non-profit organizations have tackled various complex issues such as hunger, homelessness and obesity. Health care is a social problem that interests me. Access to health care has always been my focus. Philly Fellows is unique, the organization seeks to solve social issues by cultivating talented graduates who will go out to be agents of social change and make a difference in their communities. I want to achieve change in my community by
For more than five years I had been participating in many social works, focusing on helping people start their own business and become entrepreneurs by giving them tools in how to start and manage their business. Through that time, I didn’t see this type of approach was effective, as many NGO’s and Government were doing similar activities in helping them. Many NGO’s mostly depend on donors and foundation for charity-like of approach which is hard to be sustained.
