The Olympic games are a two weeklong tournament where the best athletes compete with solidarity and fair play to develop humanism and respect among every nation. Host candidates are chosen by the IOC (International Olympic Committee) according to specific demands and requirements. Nevertheless, chosen cities are meant to promise their entire commitment and effort for investing in infrastructure, public security, public health and tourism. Despite this optimism, the prevailing concern is that the costs will increase for those living in the host nation, while the mayor benefits will be for the IOC and all the multinational partners involved. For example, while Brazil spends billions of dollars, the IOC is expected to earn billions too through sponsorship deals, owning TV rights and many other income fees. While new stadiums and new luxury hotels are built, citizens living in the favelas will be forced to leave their homes just for the government to exhibit the perfect image of a role model host. Of course everyone knows what the people are protesting about: government …show more content…
Instead of spending millions of dollars in luxurious facilities, the budget can be reduced, avoiding any type of corruption during the construction. Also, those said facilities should be built on cities where there will be a long-term use once the Games are over. To illustrate, when Mexico City held the Olympiads, the government promised that the facilities were investments meant for the citizens to give them the opportunity to practice sports with the best resources. Nowadays, Mexico City keeps upgrading and renovating the Olympiad facilities, which should be done by every nation who will be or has been host. Peru will take this as an example of what should be done and how to keep encouraging events of this
It is evident that hosting the Olympics games is no walk in the park. The countries trusted with this task have to spend billions to make the games a reality. Some people believe that the countries, even after spending billions of dollars benefit from the games, while others believe that the money can be spent elsewhere more efficiently. To reach a conclusion, one must study all of the different impacts in all of the different sectors the games have.
The city of Los Angeles will make a better location for the 2024 Olympics rather than Paris, France. There are many key factors that prove the having Los Angeles host the 2024 Olympics will go much smoother than having any other city host. For example, LA already has had the experience of hosting the Olympics, therefore the city have learned from its’ mistake. Although some may argue that another city should have a turn, the matter is not about fairness, it’s about making sure the athletes will perform in a less stressful environment. Nearly every person knows that Southern California has dreamy skies and gorgeous weather. Without having to worry about rain, snow, or an excessive heat wave, LA is at the top of the charts for a guaranteed smooth
Through the twenty-eight Summer Games and the twenty-three Winter Games, numerous cities have prospered from welcoming the Olympics. Research found that in general within two days of the Olympics’ arrival, there is a cumulative increase of two percent in the host cities’ economies (Dick and Wang). Across the globe, host cities have benefited
There are many factors in every country that transform the impact of the Olympic Games, but in general, the economic costs outweigh the benefits, while the social impacts are mostly positive. As such, countries in general should not host the Olympic Games for their own national interest, but they should first understand the impacts of the Olympics in relation to their own country before making a final
The Olympic Games are recognized globally by billions of people. This event is the biggest sporting event not only because it comes once every four years, but also because the world’s best athletes come together to compete for world fame and glory. Hosting the games seems like an honor for most people, however there is numerous risks involved
"The 2014 Olympic winter games in Sochi, Russia are projected to be the most extravagant in history. With construction and infrastructure costs elevating to over $50 billion dollars, a staggering $38 billion over budget." (Kluntz) Unlike, other cities not acceding to host the Olympics, they wouldn't be paying a fritter amount of money for something that useless. Heaps amount of cities are verbally expressing yes to host the Olympics, but little did they know what it does to your city. Hotels, and building are destructed, and wastes money that can be put out for valuable use. Cities should not host the Olympics, because the money is wasteful, Olympic structures end up being abandoned, and many host cities will go into debt.
The Olympic Games is a mega-event in the world, it represent the spirit of relationship, peace and solidarity. In the symbol of the Olympic Games, it represents the five Olympic rings means the five major regions of the world such as Africa, the America, Asia, Europe and Oceania, and all national flag in the world indicates one of the five colours such as blue, yellow, black, green, and red. Many people believe that the Olympic Games cause a significant number of issues. But, this essay will argue that cities should want to host the Olympic Games because it can lead to improvements to the city's infrastructure and stimulate the city's economy.
“Some people may rile against the commercialization or Americanization of the Olympics but figures show that the dollars from the US is critical for the sustenance of the Olympic movement. Besides TV, the IOC’s another major stream of income is private partnership.”( D.Jones 2012)
The infrastructure of the Olympic games will be a legacy. The legacy of hosting the Olympic games is most visibly identified by the improved physical character of Greater Boston. Boston 2024 Olympics bid concept shows: Greater Boston region will take an exponential jump forward with a new Midtown multifunctional neighborhood in the core of the city, a new student village at Boston’s public university, a renewed public golf course at Franklin Park and Somerville will get a opportunity to transform into the ‘cycling capital of America.’ (33) Boston 2024 committee also announced that Boston will also build more than 28 venues or renewed in a 10-kilometer radius of Boston urban area, and two major clusters for residences and stadiums will be established by the Government of Boston.(29) As Grillo said in Boston Business journal, 3,000 to 4,000 new affordable workforce units of in midtown can solve Boston’s housing
In order to support the brand value of the Olympic Rings identity and the history of good sportsmanship, the IOC needs to provide clear, written, guidelines for city bidding. These guidelines would aim for a uniform set of criteria to be applied to all cities and all situations. This creates an empirical and knowledge based social solution consistent with the organization mission. The consistent questions for each city would not be open to the influence of higher scores through bribes. For example, cities would focus on number of hotel rooms, transportation availability to venues, available food services for expected numbers, the infrastructure for moving traffic, money, and supplies, and the number of participants a venue can accommodate. All these require logistic measurable.
A white elephant is a term used to describe a possession that an owner cannot get rid of, whose initial cost and cost of maintenance far exceeds its actual usefulness. There are certain facilities that fit very accurately the description of a “white elephant”; they are called Olympic Stadiums. When it comes time to elect a country to hold the Olympic Games, many countries will raise their hand with the shimmering mirage of grand prosperity radiating in their eyes. Countries who can barely afford to stay afloat decide to launch all of their money into an Olympic Stadium, but what is the long-term impact? There is a moment in time where the alleged wealth associated to the money spent to build and host a venue for the Olympic Games settles down
Over many lifetimes the Olympic games have been a symbol of the most prestigious sporting event in the world. Throughout time the games have evolved from two events to two hundred. Along with the events, the athletes and vision of the games have changed as well. This paper is going to show the changes for better or worse of the games.
Every two years, millions of people around the world turn on their TV sets and watch the greatest athletes in the world compete for the greatest achievement any athlete can reach… The bronze, silver, and gold medals of the summer and winter Olympics. Those millions of people cheer mostly for their country and wear their favorite athlete’s jersey. They plan parties for their favorite events and make memories with every game. With all the hustle and bustle, people don’t stop to think about how the Olympics affect the town, city, state, and even world around it. How does it benefit? What does it cause? What does it leave behind? Who does it impact? So many questions can be thought up about how the Olympics impact the world. The two most
Whether hosting the Olympic Games is a good or bad thing is very complex. City officials need to take in a lot of factors when determining whether or not to put forth the resources to submit a bid. One of the most crucial factors in deciding is determining what type of legacy the Games would potentially leave on a city that hosted. Legacies can be defined as, “ planned and unplanned, positive and negative, intangible and tangible structures created through a sport event that remain after the event. (Kaplanidou & Karadakis, 2010).” Bid evaluations take into consideration the projected long-term legacy that the Games leave on a city (Kaplanidou & Karadakis, 2010). The IOC looks for cities that will achieve a positive legacy that benefits the host city and country. With a mega event like the Olympics, there are both economic and social legacies to consider when looking at a host city. It is critical for bidding cities to accumulate and analyze all the information they can in order to make an informed decision, because once a city agrees to host, there is no turning back (Lecture notes). Considering that the promises of economic legacies are generally unfulfilled, Olympic hosts should focus on using the event to generate social legacies.
Historical corruption in Mexico, however, also included a relationship with drug trafficking. Despite the fundamentally centralist nature of Mexico’s corporatist system, local governors were responsible for managing the relationship between various local interests in “a series of decentered, interlinking, constantly renegotiated pacts among federal authorities, regional politicians, and various local interest groups” (Smith 127). At the same time, however, Mexican governors were seeking to use their power for personal enrichment, which meant engaging in the drug trade as it was spiking during World War II (other drug traffic pathways to the United States were blocked by the war). As a result, between the 1930s and 1970s, “state governors, not
