Graffiti is an unauthorized painting, writing or drawing in a public space. Although some people like the graffiti, many view it as vandalism to one’s property. They think it destroys public perception of an area, a building or etc. Other people however think the graffiti symbols something meaningful. Graffiti is an art that is unauthorized. Graffiti’s existence may parallel the origins of human existence, as cave drawing can be traced back to the earliest known communication. Modern graffiti can be traced to urban areas in the northeastern United States. During the 1960s and 70s, graffiti became a method by which youth in Northeastern part of US left their marks or identification around their neighborhoods. The process of leaving one’s
Graffiti has been around for more than half a decade and practiced worldwide. However there is debate between whether it is a form of art or vandalism. Graffiti artists’ debate that many do not understand the reason most graffiti artist take the risk of incarceration, fines, injuries, and in some cases death to paint a wall. A graffiti artist can have the simple desire to become recognized, or to create a piece that speaks to their audience as a form of self expression. Because graffiti is associated with gangs and acts of destruction to some many cannot see the history and importance graffiti can have on a worldwide scale. Due to the fact that graffiti is usually produced illegally, meaning it is
If you were to go open a dictionary and look up the definition of art, you would see that it has art as “The expression or application of human creative skill and imagination…” (“Art” 2017) and “Works produced by human creative skill and imagination.” (“Art” 2017). From these definitions, graffiti is art, yet in most cases, it’s considered vandalism because it is done without permission of the property. When graffiti is done in a designated place or with the permission of the property owner, then it can truly be considered art. But even if these circumstances are not met, if the graffiti goes beyond a simple tag, it is art.
Just as Hip Hop is a form of art, so is graffiti. It allows individuals to express one’s feelings. Graffiti is one of the main pillars of Hip Hop . Graffiti is used as a way of expressing one’s feelings about what the individual is undergoing. This can be political and social issues such as racial profiling.Graffiti artists use spray paint to create symbolized images or expressions on billboards, subways and building walls. Although this is an obvious form of expression to many people, however to police, it is a form of “vandalism.” Vandalism is an action which leads to destruction or damage to public or private property. According to the Museum of The City, an exhibition written by Greg Eickmer, “Graffiti is generally viewed as
Graffiti can be found everywhere and anywhere. It is a way for people to express themselves and be creative in a public manner. It shows how passionate and talented they can be when it comes to drawing or tagging and have it displayed as a piece of art for everyone to see. Graffiti goes way back to the ancient times and is now very well known in the modern days which makes more and more people interested and fascinated by them. It can be used in different types of ways. Many artists can either spray paint, carve, paste, or stencil them on a surface. From how we see them today they are usually images of random cartoons, big bubbly letters, vintage black and whites or inspirational quotes. Virtually anything colorful or not and big that can be easily spotted. Graffiti is more superior to be known as art than vandalism because it is a self expressing act. People need to be open minded about the images they see and look at the message behind it or else they will immediately criticize and say it is vandalizing property.
Graffiti covers wall of building, bridges and a lot more of the cities. I consider graffiti to be art because it shows the emotion of the artist that have no way to show their art in public.
Art is express in many different ways. It is a form of visual expression. Art can be expressed in endlessly ways, such as music, films, writing, paints, designs, fashion, poetry, among others. One of the most controversial ways of expressing art is through graffitis. For many people, graffitis are a way to show disrespect to society, since most graffitis are painted on walls illegally. For others, it’s just another way to express art. Unfortunately, graffitis are considered to be done by gangs and mostly are found in poor neighborhoods.
Graffiti can be recognized as a form of art, or a crime, but I see it as mischievous beauty. Graffiti consists of inscriptions, slogans and drawings scratched, scribbled or painted on a wall or other public or private surface. In the book (Let The Great World Spin, 168), Fernando Yunque Marcano explains, “The ones you find in darkness. Way in the sides of the tunnels. The surprise of them. The deeper the better. Lit up by the moving lights of the train and caught for just an instant so that he’s never quite sure if he's seen them or not.”. Graffiti is used by people to express their deepest emotions, to give others a glimpse of a part of their life, whether it’s a triumph or a tragedy, or to have others ponder and relate it to their own lives,
Graffiti refers to pictures or words inscribed on public property. It has been around for thousands of years found in caves to modern buildings. However, several people argue whether modern graffiti is a force representing good or evil. Graffiti is a negative method of portraying “art” due to the fact that it negatively affects people within a community and the community itself, it consumes a lot of a cities’ economy, and it is not necessary for it to be produced on public property.
The article of Youth and Society has been based over a period of 4 years (1990-1993) from inside the Denver, Colorado Graffiti Underground. It examines the emerging graffiti writers in the context of legal and political power, social control, and writers’ resistance to them, as well as how much it is emerging around the world. Spreading from New York which is where it started off, to going through the United States, Europe and other places in the
Graffiti is a form of art that has been around for over billions of years. Graffiti can be traced back from all the way to Pompeii, the time of the ancient Mayans, and even before. During the time of Pompeii, names, sentences, and words were found traced in charcoal and red chalk to express their thoughts in writing. Most historians use graffiti to figure out how societies and cultures were like in the past years. The Graffiti in Pompeii was mostly scraps of poetry, tagged verses, or sentences from an unknown origin. Some were even affection for a friend or respect for a master. Graffiti to people is sometimes chosen instead of different forms of art because of how graffiti is expressed throughout the entire community, making people have easy
Graffiti comes in all different shapes, forms, or fonts but it all has a meaning. When I think of graffiti I think of you adults and teens that are expressing themselves using this form or art. Whereas most music producers use music to express themselves and most poets use poems and sonnets to express themselves, it is safe to say that majority of graffiti is only an
Finally, graffiti should be considered art because it is broadcasted and showcased basically everywhere you go. Whether you are walking home next to the train station and see a box car all inked up, or you look to the side of your local malls, graffiti is there. It is a way that underground artists get their work recognized and attention. Even if the attention is negative, the impact that these artists leave is there for everyone to see. Hate it or love it, these artists put time and effort into these pieces like any other
Graffiti: Art or Vandalism? The word graffiti is derived from the word graffito which means writing or drawing that has been scribbled, scratched or painted on a wall or surface that is located within public view. The origin and history of graffiti is not what one might expect. Believed to have been created by a Philadelphia high school student named Cornbread in 1967, it was a bold effort to catch the attention of a girl (De Melker). In this same time period, graffiti sprung up in New York as well. It was “one among many forms of social protest” during
