-I agree with what Fortinbras is saying regarding Hamlet’s role in the play as well as his afterlife. In the quote, “Now you have peace Hamlet you accomplished what you had to and you have peace,” Fortinbras sounds rather envious of Hamlet because Hamlet’s main goal this whole time was to avenge his father’s death and Fortinbras has not yet achieved his goals yet thus will not be able to rest in peace. “Oh, I’m dying, Horatio! This strong poison’s overpowering me.” (Act V, Scene II) In this quote, Hamlet acknowledges that he is dying and confides to Horatio. This is the moment we witness the downfall of our tragic hero, a tragedy that was bound to happen because he accomplished what he was trying to achieve and that was revenge. Although Hamlet hurt or killed innocent people along the way such as Ophelia, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern, he ended up having those that were complicit to his father’s death punished or dead. The one person that Hamlet absolutely wanted to kill to avenge his father was King Claudius, his uncle, who appears to be solely responsible for the death of Hamlet’s father. Right before Hamlet stabs Claudius he says, “the point envenomed too!then, venom, to thy work”( Act V, Scene II) After Hamlet stabs Claudius he says, “Here, thou incestuous, murderous, damned Dane, Drink off this potion. Is thy union here? Follow my mother”(Act V, Scene II), revealing all the treacheries and guilt Claudius has.
