This all sets the stage for Hamlet’s mental state prior to learning that he was killed by somebody in his family. When Hamlet hears a noise behind a curtain, and stabs at it wildly, assuming it is the man who killed his father, he finds out it is his friend Polonius, the father of Ophelia. After Ophelia learns of her father’s death, she loses touch with reality, and drowns. Once Hamlet decided to take action, he had no control over the actions of his revenge, which consequently led to his girlfriend’s death. Also, Laertes, the son of Polonius, after learning of his father’s murder by Hamlet, concocts a plot of his murder. Oftentimes, the minor characters in a play can be vital and, among other things, function to further the action of the play or to reveal and illuminate the personalities of other characters. In Hamlet, Fortinbras, the Norwegian Prince, serves as the most important foil of Hamlet and provides us with the actions and emotions in which we can compare to those of Hamlet and better reveal Hamlet’s own character. Because Hamlet and Fortinbras both lost their fathers and have sworn to avenge their deaths, Fortinbras is a perfect parallel of Hamlet. He was also very crucial to the play’s ending and to bring a remedy to the corruption that has plagued Denmark.

When Hamlet’s father, the late king of Denmark, comes to him as a ghost and reveals he died at the hands of his brother, Claudius, he demands Hamlet “revenge his foul and most unnatural murder” (1.4.23-25). Without hesitation, Hamlet agrees to avenge his father’s death, saying, “Haste me to know’t, that I with wings as swift / as meditation or the thoughts of love, / May sweep to my revenge” (1.5.29-31). He decides the proper form of justice is to kill Claudius, just as the king killed his own brother, though he has his own motives. Although deeply sorrowed by his father?s death, he did not consider payback as an option until he meets with the ghost of his father. The ghost tells Hamlet King Claudius, his own brother, murdered him. The ghost then tells Hamlet ?to revenge his foul and most unnatural murder? (I.v.25). Although murder was an acceptable form of revenge in Hamlet?s time he is uncertain about killing Claudius. However, upon his father?s command, Hamlet reluctantly swears to retaliate against Claudius. In this case, Hamlet is obsessed with yet unable to act out his revenge since he is a man of thought and reflection, not of action and impulsiveness. Claudius is ultimately revealed as the antagonist of Hamlet because he removed the good from his life, becoming the prime opposition of Hamlet. He is then faced with the king’s direction to avenge his father’s death by doing anything it takes to reveal the crimes of Claudius. Although not the chief antagonist, another opposition to Hamlet is his mother, whose crime is also revealed by the deceased king Hamlet. The king tells Hamlet how his wife betrayed him when he comments, “whose love was of that dignity that it went hand in hand even with the vow I made to her in marriage, and to decline upon a wretch whose natural gifts were poor to those of mine” (I.vi.786-791). After returning from England, where he was sent by his uncle to be executed, Hamlet reveals to Horatio that Claudius had “thrown out his angle for [Hamlet’s] life” (5.2.66) and that it would be “perfect conscience/ to [pay him back] with this [sword]” (5.2.67-68). Hamlet realizes that after trying to kill Hamlet, Claudius deserves to be killed. Despite this, Hamlet talks to gravediggers and Horatio and fences with Laertes as opposed to taking revenge on the king. Even though they are presented with similar opportunities to act on their revenge, Victor chooses to act while Hamlet only finds reasons not to.

When Hamlet is mentioned, Horatio treats Hamlet like a soldier and orders Fortinbras’s to take his body away. Prince Fortinbras says this through the following, ‘‘Bear Hamlet, like a soldier, to the stage; For he was likely, had he been put on, To have proved most royally: and, for his passage, The soldiers’ music and the rites of war, Speak loudly for him’’ (Hamlet, 380-385). This final dialogue of the entire play points for irony, in fact, it is shocking to hear, that Hamlet, who was an over-thinker throughout the whole play, would turn into a soldier. Thus, William Shakespeare brilliantly incorporates the true message of existentialism, as individuals set the setting for their own lives, based on the actions that have been available to them. Horatio plays a grand role in the afterlife of Hamlet. The man who nearly killed himself when Hamlet was on the verge of dying, is now the very reason why Hamlet’s death wasn’t in vain. Consequently, if it were not for him, Hamlet would’ve looked like a villain that tore down his own country by killing off a world leader. To rephrase what I’ve said, Horatio speaking to a dying Hamlet is one of the important sections of the story in relations to Hamlet’s victory. This is because after Horatio tells Fortinbras of Hamlet’s actions, Fortinbras hails him as a hero. So naturally, word will spread and soon the people will have found out of the tale of the royal family’s secrets. All of this has and will have painted Hamlet’s legacy out to be more heroic.

Claudius is a coward when it comes to murder. Claudius finds the most indirect way to kill someone: usually with poison. The King also manages to get Laertes to be the one to fatally injured Hamlet– showing hs manipulative tendencies. “Thou art slain./ No med’cine in the world can do thee good./ In thee there is not half an hour’s life./ The treacherous instrument is in the thy hand,/ Unbated and envenomed… The King, the King is to blame” (5.2.344-51). Here, Laertes is explaining that the king poisoned his fencing sword so he could impart the fatal blow on to Hamlet. It is not Claudius that takes the credit; Hamlet has to find out from Laertes that he is dying. Even as Hamlet is dying, Claudius still chooses to remain a coward.
