Hi Terry. Nice initial post and I enjoyed reading it. I learned to gather my data accurately and perform the head-to-toe assessment thoroughly. The data that we gather during assessment should be factual and complete to provide diagnostic reasoning, decisions, and proper treatments for patients (Jarvis, 2012). I definitely agree with you, the Shadow Health Assessment with Ms. Tina Jones was also my biggest moment from this course. She was surely challenging, but I would say it was worth it. The comprehensive assessment was difficult and I spent hours in order for me to complete the assignment. I enjoyed doing the assessments of each system. I learned the importance of documenting accurately, clearly, and concisely. In addition to that, the
Assessments for young children can be inappropriate because young children change and grow quickly. Their emotional, social, and physical development can change in just a matter of months. "Misuses of assessments for young children have been documented (Meisels, 1987, 1989, 1993; Shepard, 1991, 1994). Excessive use of standardized tests is especially inappropriate (National Association for the Education of Young Children, 1987). Standardized achievement tests alone cannot fulfill the major purpose of assessment in programs for young children. Those purposes are: instructional planning and communicating with parents, identification of children with special needs, and program evaluation and accountability". (Hills, 1992). Other children who's
Developing my skills on assessment and intervention of asthmatic patient particularly an adult has been very challenging but rewarding. My learning style was
Some were first-year students like myself and others were halfway through the program. It was interesting to get to know them, their professions and experiences with distance education. Finally, this assignment required me to summarize data from excel spreadsheet, synthesize information (5.6) and effectively communicate in a variety of forms (5.7). This was not easy as all the data had to be explained in writing and typed clearly for the reader to make sense of it. Overall, this assignment taught me the skills of analyzing quantitative data, and despite the struggles with formulas, it was an excellent opportunity to practice and answer the questions and get them right some after a few attempts if not on the first
I believe I have become more cynical over the years of being in health care and going through this course has not helped that very much. I often think to myself “Why am I in a customer service oriented job?” The entitlement people expect is mind blowing. However, I also think that my perception of health care is growing positively because of the different class and subjects that have been touched on throughout this course. I have a better understanding of the process it takes to get a law passed in our government, how to outcomes, and how to design a facility floor plan. Health care is changing quickly with the Affordable Care Act (ACA) and the amount of patients with the ability to get medical care. The amount of providers was not increased to help handle to large increase in patients. Patients are struggling to make appointments in a timely fashion because of the increased volume of calls on the call centers or front office staff. Patients are waiting longer periods of time to get an appointment because of the increased volume of patients. Doctors have the ability to not be enrolled as a provider in health care plans and that limits the availability of doctors that are able to treat patients on Medicare and Medicaid.
The programme enabled me to face obstacles and new challenges with confidence. I improved my leadership ability, organization and distributing material covering the many aspects of work done in the course. I learnt the importance of clear, concise communication while improving my organising ability. Voluntarily assisting at college open days, I was able to convey complex messages to prospective students in ways that these students could understand clearly without misconstruing information. In radiography clarity and precision are vital in diagnosis of injuries and
In addition, the course material and modules have allowed me to adjust the various aspects of my professional practice for the best outcomes. In fact, I have applied the course material to adjust my patient care plans with the result that I now appreciate the different treatment and prescriptive therapies, and the legal implications for more awareness and understanding. Besides that, my interest in the course has allowed me to prioritize with the intention of achieving a good grade. In essence, I have gained the ability to better balance what the patient needs with the legal
Reflect on what you have learned in this course and discuss how it might influence your work as a professional
Both courses introduced me the some of the basic skills and terms that I will need to competently accomplish my duties as a Radiology Technician. Secondly, Medical Terminology has provided me with a basic understanding of all the organ systems in the human body and I believe it has aided in my success in Anatomy and Physiology I. As for Basic Health Profession Skills this course alone can be considered valuable to most wanting to enter into a health profession. It is my opinion that this course has single handedly prepared me for just some of the sights, sounds, and smells that I will encounter in a medical facility. Moreover, this course has effectively informed me of the proper ways to interact with patients and their families as well as doctors and other staff members. For me this is an exceptionally important lesson to learn since it does not matter how competently you perform your duties as a health care provider, if you are unable to respect those around
Throughout this program, each class has really broadened by skills and knowledge to prepare me for practice as a family nurse practitioner delivering excellent evidence-based medicine. The first class where we learned about the role of the advance practice nurse really set the tone for what to expect as a provider and what each role entails. Moving on to the theory class, it was discovered how much nursing theory really plays a part in caring for patients. My knowledge was increased on the different theories and how one can relate them to patient situations by participating in discussion questions and preparing papers. Also, it was known that theory is what guides research to better patient care. Pathophysiology was really the building block for the makeup of the human body. One has to be proficient in knowing how different systems in the body function and how they can be affected by other processes. By reading the provided textbooks, writing papers, and participating in discussion with other classmates, my knowledge of pathophysiology was taken to a new level. The 2 advanced nursing classes really reinforced common problems that can affect different parts of the human body and how care should be managed for these conditions. There was an abundance of learning during these 2 classes that really helped prepare us for clinical rotations and
The first assessment method is a short answer question paper session delivered to level 3 students on an access health studies course. This was an informal formative type of assessment designed to assess previous learning and help the students to recap on what has been learned to date. The second assessment students were asked to prepare and deliver a 15 minute oral presentation to demonstrate knowledge gained during the module. This was an individual presentation which provided a formal summative assessment that counted toward their degree programme. Students were required to assess their own performance and they were also peer assessed by two other students within the group. This feedback and self-evaluation included aspects that worked well and areas for development. Tutor feedback was more detailed and included content, delivery and marked against the learning outcomes from the module. A graded criteria was awarded for this module. These assessment methods use the criterion referencing tool which enables all students to be

The nurse at times must review anatomy and physiology of body systems and landmarks. I had to review the body's anatomy and landmarks several times during this class and it was very helpful. I found the Shadow Health visual program a useful tool in my completion of this course. The program made me feel like I was actually in the room with the patient performing the assessments. It is a very good program and an asset to this course.
The shadow health assignments make one think in a simple yet complicated way. Compound questions cannot be asked, at times we forget that when asking questions to our patients and think that they are medically savvy. Simple open ended questions is the way to go. The shadow assignments are lengthy but when I started them and didn’t get into the appropriate questions, my scores were low. Able to see the progression of learning and interviewing in a way that flows and addresses each system correctly.
As nurses, we are the frontline advocates for our elderly patient, because the patient might be reluctant to share information about the abuse they are experiencing. When doing head to toe assessments nurses are in a position to see signs of abuse of medication, physical abuse, neglect, and sexual abuse. These type pf abuse can be seen through skin assessment; finding of bedsores (pressure sore, decubitus ulcers), bruises, broken bone, poor hygiene, dehydration over or under medication, and an overgrown nail are really good indicator of abuse. There is also mental cues for abuse such as, depression, sudden change of behavior, fearfulness, anxiety, and confusion. Most of these findings are objective, but it can be hard to obtain subjective
