Health Current Events An optamaligist known as Dr. Ralph Chu and Dr. Rex Hamilton have made some ground breaking discoveries in helping to prevent fading close up vision. They have made an amazing eye plant called the rain drop. The rain drop helps with reshaping the cornea so it can focus better and faster. One of the most important ways it helps people with close up vision is to be able to read better. According to Dr. Ralph Chu, “this is one of the most significant advances in apthomology in 20 years. The reason why it is so important is because it can remove the need for reading glasses in anyone that affected by presbyopia also known as the aging eye. The lenses costs 4000$ to get implanted are not covered by insurance.
This public health policy paper will discuss and outline the Affordable Care Act (ACA) as well as barriers and controversies surrounding the policy and its relevance in nursing profession. The ACA will eventually affect everyone. Statistics reflecting United States health outcomes have proven the need for the initiation of policy formation within the United States healthcare system. “In March 2010, President Obama signed into law a comprehensive health reform, the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA).” (Estes, Chapman, Dodd, Hollister, Harrington, 2013, p. 144) The ACA promotes preventive care—including related services and family planning—that should result in improved health outcomes and
After reviewing this article, I have determined that the dimensions of health involved with this issue are physical, environmental, and intellectual. For starters, this issue affects a person's physical health because it causes the body to deteriorate until eventually the person dies. Those who become addicted fail to take proper care of their body with healthy products but rather ingest harmful ones. Another dimension involved is environmental because depending where a person lives will depend how accessible these painkillers are. In an area where a doctor over prescribes painkillers, or people illegally sell painkillers, there should be a higher addiction rate because painkillers are easier to obtain. The final dimension involved
“For over 60 years, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has been dedicated to protecting health and promoting quality of life through the prevention and control of disease, injury, and disability,” (CDC, 2012, p. 1). The organization has a focus of decreasing the health and economic disadvantages of the principal reasons of demise and incapacity through diverse programs, thus safeguarding an extended, prolific, vigorous life for people, (CDC, 2012). This paper will expound on The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and it is enhancement to the fundamental operations
As we all know, the United States has been and continues to be on the edge of national health reforms due to uncontrolled healthcare costs. Since the U.S. health care system does not lead the world in health of its own citizens, 28 million Americans remain uninsured and 30 Million more are underinsured as of 2016 (Jama, 2016). The national health reform started in the early 1900s when the American people faced sickness that led to poverty. Working people had to miss work due to sickness which led to a loss of their wages and steady income, making it hard to pay for medical expenses. The decreased income, made it hard to seek medical attention, because it became a matter of just being able to cover necessities. President Theodore Roosevelt
Every year the step team does a performance during the Health Fair. This year we wanted to try something different, so we decided to teach steps to children from the area. Most of our steps are elite and very tedious to learn so we had to figure out what steps would be appropriate to teach without the children losing interest. Originally, we started with three kids who are siblings of one of my teammates. Later on in the day, after the drill team performed, some of drill team members came over to learn a couple of step moves, along with a couple of girls from the dancing school.
The U.S. healthcare system is broken. The health care expenditures are the highest in the world and increasing every year at a rate that poses a serious threat to all Americans. For example, the national health expenditures per capita increase from $1,110.00 in 1980 to $9,255 in 2013 and it projected to rise to 19.3% by 20251. However, higher spending does not produce better health care or better outcomes and does not improve patient perceptions of the accessibility or quality of healthcare care. We had enough, we cannot rely on our wasteful, fragmented multi-payer system of financing health care; something must be done to improve our healthcare system and make healthcare affordable for the entire nation.
In 2010, the Affordable Care Act invoked a $75 millon dollar demonstration project known as the Medicad Emergency Psychiatric Demonstration that was amended in section 2707 of the Affordable Care Act (ACA). The change seemed to be just what the nation needed, however, there was fine print added to the amendment that changed the interpretation. The fine print stated, patients who are on Medicaid from the ages of 21-65 seeking inpatient mental health care can receive treatment under the law. However, the inpatient facility will receive no
2016 reports state that there has been a 4 percent increase of American adults suffering from mental illness (18.53 percent) when compared to 2015 (18.19 percent) (“2016 State of Mental Health in America - Adult Data”, MHA). Mental disorders have been a continuous public health concern within the United States, one of most chronic, disabling, costly, and recognizable being Schizophrenia. Contrary to popular belief, this mental disorder is rather common, an estimated 1.5 percent of the United States population being diagnosed within their lifetime (“What is Schizophrenia?”, SRF). Although treatment provided by specialty services may be highly effective, only 44 percent of Americans diagnosed seek treatment. In order to encourage that number to rise, the United States government needs to update the costs per treatment, increase the effectivity, and inform the population of the demands it deserves in order to achieve effective recoveries.
Thank for your informative post. Engaging in healthcare politics is not as easy as it sounds. Even though nurses may join their employer’s union and or become a member of a major nursing organization it does not necessarily mean they are actively involved. According to Rubenstein and Graham (2011), nurses should complete baccalaureate education feeling confident in their ability to participate in political activism. Insufficient knowledge of the political process, they denote results in a lack confidence that in turn hinders nurse engagement and impedes their ability to influence change (Rubenstein & Graham, 2011).
Cardiovascular diseases (CVD), diabetes and adiposity cause deaths, lack of quality life and economic effects on a global scale. Most of the conditions and effects can be prevented and are experienced at very early stages due to the lifestyle habits regarding poor diets, physical in-activities and excessive tobacco consumption. The resulting burdens to the families, societies and countries are very huge and unsustainable (Institute of Medicine, 2010). The health and economic imperatives in the improvement of lifestyle behaviors are completely evident. It is therefore important that the right approach be applied in dealing with the causal factors of bad health with the objective of improving the people’s health. The population approach in dealing with health matters creates a more focused dimension in reaching a wider population. The paper makes a proposal to the solutions for promoting better health for the American population by evaluating the possible recommendations.
The United States has encountered numerous problems throughout its history. An ongoing problem that has affected millions of Americans is poor health. Poor health can be defined as two things: unstable mental state or unstable physical state. The United States of America has experienced both of these characteristics with its citizens. Americans have been hit hard with these health issues for decades. America is one of the unhealthiest countries in the world and many people do not understand why. There is a strong correlation between mental health and physical health. One health issue can lead to another, which in-turn, makes people feel as if they are trapped in a horrific cycle of living in poor conditions. This causes people to feel insecure about themselves emotionally and physically, creating disgust in themselves. One of the most challenging objectives for individuals is engaging in physical activity. This is the reason why health is an issue in America. Individuals who lack physical health can eventually lead to depression and other psychological issues and vice versa.
Recommendations for the health fair encourage participants to explore all the booths to promote healthier lives. The health fair is a place to learn about resources, treatment options to increase health. The knowledge obtained by the participant can assist their families. Follow up calls for participants who had positive testing that need to seek further treatment or confirm a diagnosis. Follow ups can also consist mailings of health information. Health fairs would have a greater benefit to the public if more health care professionals such as physicians, dentists and nurses got involved. The coordination of medical programs with organizations would assist with the reduction health disparities and improve prevention and screening. Health fairs
The federal, state, and local health department all have goals that come under a national mission that reflects a system that offers an existence, residential and in the workplace that promotes and endures safety and an ideal health status. To do this a regular temperature must be taken, in the form of a needs assessment as well as demography of the target population(s). Like a target population, that can be diverse, is the idea of intersectoral practice which brings a variety of organizations to participate in achieving their shared goals. As our populations are changing, so is the need for more health education programs,
The competency, “Analyze determinants of health and disease using an ecological framework” was met through the exercise, “Health Problem Analysis Worksheet” and through reading Chapter 2 in the book Public Health: What it is and How it Works.
Public health is a dynamic field of medicine that is concerned primarily with improving the health of populations rather than just the health of individuals. Winslow (1920) defined public health as;
