Teen depression is a serious mental health problem that causes a persistent feeling of sadness and loss of interest in activities. It affects how a teenager thinks, feels and behaves. It can cause emotional, functional and physical problems. Holden Caulfield lost his younger brother Allie to leukemia when Holden was thirteen years old. Following the death of Allie, Holden broke his hand punching the windows out of the garage of their summer home. Holden’s mindset reveals depression is the cause of his struggles. Depression was actively present in Holden’s behavior. The source of his depression was the death of his brother Allie. Holden was aware the entire time of his impending punishment. Holden loved Allie, and was disturbed from the news of his death. Holden was hospitalized after punching his garage windows. When Holden explained Allie’s traits, he said, “But it wasn’t just that he was the most intelligent member in the family. He was also the nicest, in lots of ways” (Salinger 50).” Holden thought the most of Allie. He thought Allie had the most potential out of anybody he had ever met. He also thought Allie was a genuinely good person, and that he did not deserve to die. One of the greatest causes to depression is a death or a loss. When Holden finally came up with an answer to phoebe’s question to think of something that he liked, Holden’s answer was that he liked Allie. Phoebe told Holden that Allie is dead. Holden then said, “I know he's dead! Don't you think I know that? I can still like him, though, can't I? Just because somebody's dead, you don't just stop liking them, for God's sake especially if they were about a thousand times nicer than the people you know that're alive and all" (Salinger 222-223). Holden was constantly depressed about Allie because he was always thinking of him. Allie was the nicest person Holden had ever met. The death of a person with an impact like that would cause anyone devastation. His mindset makes him believe that no one else will be as good to him as Allie was. He just needed to waste time and try to have fun while he could. Dr. Thurman was going to write to Holden’s parents on that Monday explaining his situation. Instead of telling his parents himself and apologizing he wanted to wait as long as possible because his mindset made him think he cannot improve anything. Holden went through his own human experience knowing the end for him is near and he thought there was nothing he could do to stop it. He drank a lot of alcohol that weekend. When Holden was piss drunk all alone at the park, he said, “I didn’t even know where I was going to sleep yet so I went. I wasn’t tired or anything. I just felt blue as hell” (Salinger 199). Holden was very lonely that weekend. There was nobody he could talk to or interact with. He just drowned himself in booze trying to make life easier for him night after night. Alcohol is a depressant and makes the user feel less stress, but it can also worsen depression itself. Holden knowing he had to come home to a tough punishment only made the weekend harder for him. After Holden went with old Sally to go ice-skating at Radio City, he thought about his offer to old Sally. Holden said, “If you want to know the truth.
