Personal Statement
Infrastructure has always played a crucial role in human prosperity. Development in infrastructure like roads, bridges and dams has facilitated interaction between different communities enhancing trade and cultural exchange. Until recently little attention was paid to the effects of infrastructure development on our environment and living conditions. Increased exploitation of natural resources is challenging mankind’s response to nature’s dynamic equilibrium changes. I believe Civil Engineering will play a major role in harmonious engineering development and overcome years of non-sustainable development planning.
India is on the threshold of hectic development in infrastructure and is in a tearing hurry to make up for lost time as it tries to catch up with the developed world to achieve a better standard of living. It is here that I hope to contribute to a more conscientious development agenda that will have minimal effects on future generations. Watching a country blossom with new mega-structures and cities is an opportunity that comes once every few generations and structural engineering will form the center stage of engineering development. Ever since childhood, I was curious about how things were shaped in the world. When I visited towns and cities I was always stuck staring at physical structures – be it an ancient monument or a daunting skyscraper. Fortunately, I had patient members in my family who explained the intricacies that ensured my
At the last year of college, I took construction management specialisation and worked as a junior researcher in Center for Sustainable Infrastructure Development University of Indonesia (CSID-UI). As a fresh graduate, I decided to pursue my career in infrastructure by joining Cardno Emerging Markets (Australia) Pty Ltd since 2 October 2017. Working as an assistant engineer in international consultant leads me to broaden my perspective in managing Indonesia’s infrastructure asset, in National Roads Delivery team, we analyse pavement and bridge condition to be stored in a cloud storage namely JunoViewerWeb. Obviously, every day is a learning process throughout my lifetime experiences both on campus and workplace, then instead of feeling satisfied with my bachelor degree, I intend to enhance my knowledge and skill to improve the better sustainable infrastructure for my country’s future by taking a higher level of
Every family, every community, and every business needs infrastructure to thrive (ASCE). It is evident that we are dependent on our nation’s infrastructure, but as Andrew Soergel, an economy reporter at U.S. News states, “We need to stop talking about infrastructure as simply an engineering prospect and more as an economic one.” He’s right as infrastructure projects currently make up a vast part of our economy, nearly 11 percent of the American workforce today is employed directly in infrastructure sectors (USNEWS). In a report on the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, the Congressional Budget Office wrote that, “Spending on infrastructure created the second-most economic activity for each dollar spent.” This power comes from the strong economic activity that is generated by the direct hiring of workers to build the needed infrastructure, as well as the boost from the increased spending of those newly hired workers. National Editor of Forbes magazine Robert Lenzner estimates that long-term infrastructure investment programs are bound to create 23,000 jobs for every $1 billion of investment. This will help lower unemployment and raise GDP. The long-term health of the economy is also helped by strong public infrastructure because it helps to boost the productivity of workers and businesses in the private sector. Well-maintained roads, for example, allow
Throughout the course of history there have been many advances in the world of infrastructure, mostly occurring in the 1800’s and the 1900’s. Infrastructure is defined as the basic physical and organizational structure needed for the operation of a society or enterprise, or the services and facilities necessary for an economy to function. This definition shows how important infrastructure is to people’s lives today. It affects how people live, travel, and communicate with one another. Three men who made huge contributions in the world of infrastructure were Robert Moses, Richard Ravitch and Othmar Hermann Ammann. All three of these men were involved in designing numerous landmarks, highways, bridges, tunnels, and other forms of infrastructure that today we take for granted. Although all of these men were involved in infrastructure in the New York metropolitan area, their contributions, personalities, and the public’s opinion of them were all different.
I eventually want to graduate from UNCG with my degree in recreational therapy. I know that once I do that, then I will be one step closer to accomplishing one of the many goals I have set out to conquer. Then of course I want to attend graduate school for my program and graduate with my doctorate in that field but ultimately I would like to be my own boss and have my own physical therapy practice and facilities etc. I can honestly say I see myself established in my career 5 years from now and doing what I love of course which is helping others through rehab. The population I most interested working with in the future is children. Even though they are high in energy and may be hard for them to consecrate on the activity they are doing, I feel as though they would be the most fun and easiest group to deal with. I love to see joy I bring in a child life. The satisfaction of being that individual to make a change in their life or they look up to me as a role model makes me feel like their superhero. This gives me the chance to connect with a child who has been struggling, and when they finally understand what you 're trying to teach them is most fulfilling. The book "Everything I Know About Business I Learned from the Grateful Dead: The Ten Most Innovative Lessons from a Long, Strange Trip" by Barry Barnes and John Perry Barlow is an interesting book that contain business fundamentals useful for your business. Reading this book, you are able to use information that works for
America made a multibillion dollar investment when the Federal Highway Act of 1956 was signed into law by Dwight Eisenhower. This was a milestone for America, connecting the nation like it had never been before. Since this time, however, the United States has done very little in terms of infrastructure investment. Currently, the American Society of Civil Engineers ranks America’s infrastructure as a D + (2013). American no longer leads the world in the best roads, airports, rail, or bridges. This is a serious problem that will lead to security, environmental, economic, and political issues if not addressed fully and swiftly. America needs to act promptly to revive the nation’s infrastructure system before additional nations surpass the US while the cost becomes too big to bear.
2.This explains that if the government increase work on public infrastructure, there will be more jobs for planning and working in the field. This will help both environment and people by developing the environment while giving people jobs.
If I were to conclude my education after finishing secondary school, there would not be many fruitful paths ahead of me. Without pursuing further education in post-secondary programs, life would be prolific with simplicity; there are those who advocate the concept of simplicity over challenge, but in a life abounding in simplicity, I see a life of tedium. By enrolling in post-secondary programs, I expose myself to novel challenges and opportunities. Furthermore, I have the freedom to explore my passions and satisfy my ambitions. In my case, I have a passion for biological sciences and knowledge, and a fervent ambition to gain as much relevant knowledge as possible. At a post-secondary institution, I am able to choose the degree that is
As a high school senior I am looking forward to continuing my education this fall. A post-secondary education will help me achieve my future goal of becoming the best pediatric neurosurgeon I can be and save every life I can. At the age of fifteen I started my own business to help bring hope into the lives of families that are going through challenging times. I founded Every Little Stitch to create special keepsakes for orphans, children who have had traumatic injuries, foster children, ladies groups, churches, and even to be an encouragement to parents who have lost their child. I have personally walked through the halls of many hospitals where lives will never be the same. Nearly two years ago, my brother was involved in a freak accident
In 5 years I want to go to college and get my degree in engineering and maybe work on cars for a living or I am going to be a state cop and chase people down and catch them. It depends on the way I want to go. I am sure I will find a job that suits me fine. I can’t wait till I get to college and get my own car to drive around in but until 5 years are over looks like I’m sticking to my bike.
Many people around the entire world do not possess the knowledge of the different types of constructions and if there is a specific reason this construction are made in certain way or area of the world. Construction is more complex than just building an infrastructure or a facility. It takes planning, land property inspection, design, in numerous occasion financing and the process ends once the project is built and ready for use.
When I was in my junior year of high school my dad have talk to me on what college I wanted to attend. At first I was bit skeptical where I wanted to go, however I had a passion to become an air pilot, so I chose to attend Middle Georgia State. When I looked at the cost to just attend one year of school I had to figure out how I was going to pay to attend because one thing I knew for sure was that my parents were not going to pay much for it. So as my junior and senior year was going by I was applying to all these big scholarships like the Coca Cola, Dell, and even Burger King it all landed to me with losing both years. In the middle of senior year I decided to apply for local organizations but still have not obtain a scholarship of any sort.
I seem to have always had an underlying passion for infrastructure. That is a fact which I only came to fully comprehend during the summer. The Python Bridge, with its red snake-like abnormal shape, and Magere Brug, with its iconic drawbridge properties, are both picturesque examples of engineering done “right”. Perhaps it is that realisation of modern life being wholly dependent on engineering, which is everywhere and is always changing; perhaps it is the pressures of the ever increasing population and global warming; or perhaps it is the idea of helping to change the world around me to meet the demands of the future generations. That has driven me to hope for a challenging career which I will find personally gratifying and feel that I have given something back to the community.
Our transportation system, quite arguably, may embody our most vital system, as Infrastructure and Democracy clarifies, “access is the hallmark of a great infrastructure” (Jones, Reinecke). By great contrast, our roads remain a current issue. 42 percent of America’s urban highways remain congested, costing the United States 101 billion dollars in wasted time and fuel each year. Also, the32 percent of roads, in poor or mediocre condition, cost the average traveler $324 per year (American Infrastructure Report Card). Unfortunately, updating the highway systems seems longer than it may seem, as the Government Accountability Office (GAO) estimates that from proposal to completion most highways will need nine to nineteen years to fix (Leduc, Wilson 129). In addition to the roads, our bridges are failing just as much. One of every nine bridges within the United States is categorized as structurally deficient. The average bridge 42 years old, and in order to eliminate the bridge renovation backlog, our country would need to invest twenty and a half billion dollars until 2028 (American Infrastructure Report Card). However, in 2013, the United States only invested 12.8 billion dollars in bridge reconstruction and repair (American Infrastructure Report Card). Also, our countries transit
I have gained appreciation of the commercial pressures that the construction industry is exposed to and how our work as structural engineers is influences by it. I have developed this understanding through working my projects London Wall Place and Key Bridge House, through graduate training, reading on the subject and taking part in the Enginuity competition.
Ever since I was young, I have admired intricate buildings and structures. I have always appreciated a nice, well thought out home because I do believe home is where the heart is. I have done lots of research on architecture, and what it takes to become an architect. I am naturally drawn to this career because it requires lots of creativity and an eye for design. Being an architect also allows you to interact with people, which is important to me because I am a social person. It also is a steady job and brings in a good salary.
