Symbolism Irony and mood in The Gift of Magi In the short story “The Gift of The Magi” by O. Henry uses irony mood and symbolism to greatly impact the experience of the story about Jim and Della. It’s Christmas time and both Della and Jim sacrifice their meaningful valuables to get one another something for Christmas. Jim sells his watch that was passed down from his loved ones. Della cuts off her hair that she has been growing for a very long time and sells it to buy Jim something. O. Henry incorporates mood and tone to set the theme of love and sacrifice by using literary devices such a irony and symbolism to make an even greater impact.
