Is The American Dream Attainable

The American Dream is about people doing their absolute best to attain the life that they always dreamed of having. Some people think that the American Dream is attainable. Then there are the people who think that the American Dream is not attainable. There are three sources that tell how the American Dream is attainable and how it is not attainable. They are: Grad Who Beat The Odds Asks, Why Not The Others, The American Dream: A Short History of an Idea That Shaped a Nation and Hollywood Dreams Of Wealth, Youth And Beauty.

Today in America, some think the American Dream is fictional, and is exactly what it sounds like; just a dream. But the American Dream is achievable, and has been since the birth of this great country. The American Dream is an individualized goal that a person has which is usually very tough to achieve, but all have a chance to work toward it because of opportunities like high level education, jobs, and especially an equal chance to achieve one's desired life. America still provides access to the American Dream because regardless of background, current financial status, or race, the American Dream is achievable with hard work.

Through everybody’s eyes is their own version of the American Dream. Whether it’s the stereotypical dream with a good job, a family, and a house with a white picket fence, or it could be just getting by at the end of the month financially. The American Dream doesn’t have a specific image but rather a particular mindset. Lots of people have a goal in their life that they have to work hard to be successful towards that goal, but in most cases that goal may be unrealistic.

America provides opportunity to achieve the American Dream yet so many argue that it is impossible today. The American Dream consists of having opportunity to be someone financially stable and having success in your life. It is a long road to the American Dream with many obstacles on the way. Everyone is given an opportunity to start, with education being free. It is up to the person to decide whether they will continue their education to open more opportunities for their future. The American Dream is a reality that can be achieved today through hard work, self-perseverance and motivation to succeed.

Achieving the American Dream is like fighting over the last TV on Black Friday. The American Dream is very limited. A person has to have a certain background to achieve it. The American Dream is an illusion. America wants one to believe that they have the perfect set of materialistic things to make their life better. The American Dream consist of having money, a nice house, a great looking car, and a family. Not everyone can achieve that though because of the barriers that they have in this country. The American Dream is not achievable by all people because individual’s divergent backgrounds.

The American Dream is pivotal to America's upbringing and culture. It has existed before America has. Its is the belief that a person could achieve success in America through hard work. The American Dream is somethings everyone wished to accomplish, and for good reason. However, the dream is increasingly getting harder to achieve than ever before. Be it for prejudice, persecution, social constructs, or even sexism. For some people, the American Dream is still a reality, but for others it will always be a dream.

The American dream, for most people, is exactly that – A dream. It’s make believe, fiction. It’s what we think American should be like, not what it actually is. The American dream will always be out of reach for common people. The majority of people I interviewed said something along the lines of, “the American dream is to be given a chance to do something or be something you want to be.” This opinion seems to be too optimistic. Everyone wants more than what they have. It’s not enough to be given the chance, you have to succeed. What it takes to succeed is an entirely different aspect of the American dream.

Though it may be hard, achieving the American Dream is attainable. Anna Quindlen states, “A mongrel nation built of ever changing disparate parts, it is held together by a notion, the notion that all men are created equal…” (Staff 2010) All men are created equal, therefore every person has the chance to achieve the American Dream. Many years ago today, the United States of America was the prime example of prosperity and opportunity. It established America with the idea that its citizens would be guaranteed life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Today, it is true that people have liberties and are free to pursue happiness. However, in recent years, in the worst recession since the Great Depression. Unemployment, growing economy inequality, and medical care have skyrocketed. Therefore, the problem with the American Dream lies not within the dream itself, but within the means people pursue to attain this dream.

Getting rich, building a family, escaping poverty, seeking refugee, or starting a life on your own are all different aspects of the American dream. Everyone who come to America has a chance to make something of themselves if they work hard and do not succumb to temptation. America offers a fresh start, an empty canvas and your dream is to fill it. F Scotts Fitzgerald proves there is an American dream for everyone, but it is not an automatic guarantee. In The Great Gatsby and a Ted Talk, the American dream is different to every American, something worth believing in and achievable, but not guaranteed.

America is the land of the free where there is ample opportunities for individuals to achieve any goals they put effort into obtaining. Many individuals immigrate to America to have the American Dream that is offered to all its citizens. The dream of owning their own house, having a job that gives them the opportunity to move up the career ladder, financial stability, having a family, owning a car, ability to receive an education, and having freedom and equality.
