“Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world” (Mandela). In discussions of education, Newman argues that there should be a common shared knowledge between people. According to statistics, there are 70% of Americans who do not hold a college degree. Newman’s ideas revolve around the belief that everyone should go to college and pursue a higher education. If Newman’s ideas are implemented in today’s society, there will not only be short term difficulties like a greater demand for teachers and supplies but also long term difficulties with America’s economy. Although Newman’s system sounds like it would create a better world in the surface, it would be one which is hard to apply in today’s American society.

In the essay “Knowledge it’s Own End,” he claims “the idea of benefiting society by means of the pursuit of science and knowledge”(34). In other words, he believes that people will use liberal knowledge to positively contribute in their society. In order to have more liberal knowledge for students, there needs to be an expansion for the courses that college offers. This is a great idea for students because it will increase their intellect but this will also increase the demand of teachers at all schools. If more people are going to college, more teachers would be needed to teach the different subjects offered. This will also lead to students spending a greater amount of time in school taking more classes. In our school system, most people are graduating with a bachelor’s degree at age 22 or 23. No matter what age they were. That would not be possible because that would mean people would have to end up quitting their jobs because of the amount of time they are required to be in school. Therefore there should be an age limit enforced in order for the school system to work in today's society. The younger generation along with the upcoming generation should contribute in the new system. As of now, kids are starting kindergarten at the age of 5. The idea of a universal education system is criticized by many, because the idea of giving everyone a chance to prosper, has a detrimental effect on government resources; and the value placed on a post- secondary education, is somewhat diluted. This is wrong though, as people be judged on their academic skills, character and drive above their economic restrictions. The finances which a young person is born into, should not determine the life and career which they have. It has been shown that a college education increases a person’s earning power, but this education is contingent on money, which dictates your chance of achieving a recognized education. This is against the ‘education gospel’ which supports the idea that schooling should be for everyone, and that the more people who are educated, the less prejudices there will be in society. Education is universal, but post-secondary education, and one which leads people to positions of power and influence, is not. It is for the select few, of whom have the finances and opportunities to prosper that other, more underprivileged people do not, and that needs to change.

According to Ken Robinson, the current education system has yet to adapt to the modern world and it’s different modes of thinking, creating a stand still in curriculum success that is in desperate need of reform. The current system was established during the 18th century during the Industrial Revolution, which was based largely on agricultural and urban advancements.
