Lean Six Sigma

Lean Six Sigma concepts were introduced in the book titled Leaning into Six Sigma: The Path to Integration of Lean Enterprise and Six Sigma (Lean Six Sigma). Lean Six Sigma methodologies combine lean manufacturing and Six Sigma strategies to rely on improved performance from a collective team effort that systematically reduces variation and removes seven kinds of waste, known as Muda. Muda includes any unnecessary motion, transport, wait time, inappropriate processing, excess inventory, overproduction, and defects (Lean Six Sigma). Furthermore, Lean Six Sigma methods aim to provide customers with the best possible quality, cost, and delivery (ASQ.org, n.d.). Successful deployment of Lean Six Sigma is often considered a function of the inputs with those being shown below in figure 1.1. As the companies are evaluated keep in mind those critical X’s are often evaluated as the function Y = f(X) or Outputs = f(Inputs). In other words by controlling the inputs an organization can predict the output of the Lean Six Sigma implementation. This point is key when evaluating the difference between successful and not-so-successful implementations.

In this document we have done a detailed study of Six Sigma and Lean Six Sigma and how they help Business Analysts to maximize their skill sets to attain maximum process improvements in their activities. We introduce the topic, provide a historical timeline and disucuss its relevance to the topic. After that, we analyze current state and use the information to provide results in Analysis and Synthesis section.

Such improvement tools, however, must also be applied with evaluative methods that will ensure that it is capable and effective for improved quality as a whole. Organizations improve quality by regularly using performance management methods and tools and one of them is the Six Sigma which aids in planning and refining their designs to accomplish organizational objectives.

Background to Six Sigma The contemporary business environment is rapidly evolving. With the increased impetus toward globalization, organizations are undergoing continuous and rapid change driven by increased consumer expectations, the advent of new technologies, and the very real prospect of global competition (Bendell, 2005). This has resulted in a dramatically different business environment in which the modern business, in order to survive and prosper, is forced to evolve and regularly revise their internal and external business processes. One of the tools that was developed to aid in this change process was Six Sigma.

Since the core of Six Sigma management is quality, it is consistent with lean thinking. Use lean thinking which is focusing on eliminating waste and identifying improvement. When fused with the main elements in lean production, such as 5S system, TPM, stability and standardization6, the Six Sigma production system can be better operated. Quality can prove its own value only if product can best serve customer and provides benefits to shareholders, so when comes to the quality issue, doing statistical analysis about the customers’ demand and company’s goals is essential for the “master black belt” and “black belt ” to lead teams to right places.

In recent years[update], some practitioners have combined Six Sigma ideas with lean manufacturing to yield a methodology named Lean Six Sigma.

Six sigma and lean system has the same way of approaching but uses different technology to achieve the goal. The both procedure lives up to expectations for to dispense with waste and expand the productivity of the procedure and convey the zero defect items. Recognizable of primary cause of waste is the fundamental distinction between lean and six sigma. lean innovation says that waste originates from undesirable steps in the production process which don 't add the value of the final product while six sigma says that waste is a direct result of variety of diverse procedures.

What is lean Six Sigma? Lean Six Sigma is the values defect prevention over defect detection which is a face-based, date-driven philosophy of improvement. Reducing variation, waste, and cycle time to drive customer satisfaction and bottom line result. A competitive advantage is created while promoting the use of work standardization and flow. So that every employees of a company should be involved to apply anywhere variation and waste exist to improve the performance. The demarcation is blurred between Six Sigma and lean. To attain positive results it requires aspects of both approaches of the improvement process so that “Lean Six Sigma” the term is with greater frequency that we are hearing about. Few of them are GE, Motorola, Siemens, ABB, Citi Bank, Ford etc. Many Japanese and Korean companies like LG, Toshiba, Honda, Sony and Samsung have also implemented Six Sigma. Many organizations are implementing Six Sigma in India. ICICI, Larsen & Toubro, Mahindra & Mahindra, Tata motors, HDFC are some major organizations implementing Six Sigma. Due to globalization world market is opened to Indian organizations and to compete with other countries they want to bring their products & services to world class level. To achieve this along with various methodologies Six Sigma is becoming popular in India.
