Among college students, the overall use of drugs has significantly declined due to many laws and regulations that are enforced on the UF campus. Tobacco and smoking is prohibited. However, drug use off campus is not eliminated and may still cause problems with student learning capabilities. The most significant and commonly used drug by college students is marijuana. “Daily marijuana use among college-aged young adults is at its highest since 1980, surpassing daily cigarette smoking for the first time in 2014” (College).
Most college students cease to believe that smoking marijuana is just as harmful as tobacco or other illicit drugs. In actuality, marijuana has a high level of carcinogens, as well as carbon monoxide, which makes the heart work harder to deliver oxygen to deprived tissues. The same health issues that arise from smoking tobacco such as, emphysema, bronchitis, and other respiratory problems can also be brought on by smoking marijuana.
Marijuana may be used for psychological, social, addictive, or personal reasons. Side effects of this illicit drug that negatively impact student academic performance include decreased motivation, attention, concentration, and memory, all of which hinder learning (How). The use of marijuana can also cause student’s to forget and miss assignments, which is yet another factor that increases a student’s risk for poor academic performance. When a student starts to become dependent, they don't see their drug use as a problem, especially when marijuana is so prevalent among college students. At this stage, students continue use despite negative consequences. Students should be aware of the dependency issues that are associated with marijuana and decrease their use as soon as possible.
