Marijuana on Campus In today’s society marijuana is becoming more normalized and legal in some states. But that does not change the matter that marijuana is illegal under the federal laws. After many states legalizing medical and recreational marijuana, it leaves room for institutions to questions how to handle student use. On this paper, I will be discussing the policies institutions have taken place and how they navigate federal and state laws. How do universities navigate the conflict between federal and state law? As state laws changes in some states, universities quickly have to adapt to the changes. Students who live in states that medical and recreational marijuana is legal need to understand that institutions do not have to obey the state laws. Universities have alcohol guidelines and I believe they should have marijuana guidelines. Students need to be aware of the consequences and the impact this can have on their federal financial aid if they are caught with marijuana. Many campuses are "smoke-free" which already informs the student that they should not be smoking anything on campus. Institutions need to understand the impact of marijuana may have on their particular campus based on their populations to be able to educate on the usages and prevention. What is your personal evaluation of these changes in the law as it relates to student affairs practice? My personal evaluation of these changes is based on the federal laws. I believe that institutions need to follow the federal laws to keep their funding. I do not think marijuana is bad for everyone, it has shown that it can help medically and is much safer than alcohol. Institutions should have guidelines to help students understand the consequences if they consume marijuana on
Among college students, the overall use of drugs has significantly declined due to many laws and regulations that are enforced on the UF campus. Tobacco and smoking is prohibited. However, drug use off campus is not eliminated and may still cause problems with student learning capabilities. The most significant and commonly used drug by college students is marijuana. “Daily marijuana use among college-aged young adults is at its highest since 1980, surpassing daily cigarette smoking for the first time in 2014” (College).
The legalization of recreational marijuana is an important debate, one that could really cause drastic changes in societies. Marijuana has entered a dark stage in the pathway of legalization, and it is correlating with the prohibition stage that alcohol rested in. The debate can often reach a nasty level between individuals taking sides with the topic. Legalization of marijuana can be very beneficial under regulated circumstances, therefore making all of the negative views less important.
The topic of legalizing recreational marijuana in the United States has been a very controversial one. States such as Colorado and Washington have gone on the offensive and have legalized recreational marijuana and have enjoyed the high revenues brought in from cannabis sale. On the other hand other states have kept low profiles because they are wary of the possible negative outcomes of legalizing recreational marijuana and are using the states of Colorado and Washington as guinea pigs to see what their next course of action on this controversial topic should be. This is not only a highly debated topic among politicians, but also by the people. According to a poll conducted by the Pew Research Center 52% of Americans
Five states have implemented way to minimize the amount of crime while people are still able to use. Even though the states have made this determination though a vote. The Federal government still sees it as a felony crime. Within the reform strict policies have been set in place. Should marijuana be decriminalized or legalized? Should there be restrictions based on age. There was an analysis done that compared five states that implemented major marijuana reforms. Evaluating their effectiveness in reducing marijuana arrests and their impact on various health and safety outcomes. All- ages decriminalization more effectively reduced marijuana arrest and associated harms for people of all ages, particularly young people. The decriminalization in California has not resulted in harmful consequences for teenagers, such as increased crime, drug overdose, driving under the influence, or school drop outs. California teenagers showed improvement in all
The Legalization of Marijuana in the state of Arizona has been under fire for the past several years. Ever since 2010 when Prop 203, which called the right to have a medical marijuana card in the state, arose it caused a stir in society on which to allow marijuana to be legal. The ballot for the state is set in November and as we approach the deadline many people are coming out with their takes on the issue. The legalization of marijuana has many positive and negative effects on society that make it a tough decision for many voters. Marijuana has been a commonly used medication for thousands of years, the oldest written record of the use of marijuana is 2727 B.C.E. in china, up until 2003 when marijuana was classified as a Schedule 1 controlled substance by the Controlled Substance Act which prohibited use and sale of the substance. This act caused major controversy and sparked many scientific experiments that are still going on today to try to understand the drug.
The benefits for legalizing Marijuana in Arizona would give schools $40 million a year. The money would go to k-12 school operations, maintenance, and all day kindergartens. The new bill that might be passed takes away about $3 million from Glendale Union High School Districts. This not only affects students in high school and in lower levels, but also future college students as the budget cuts would cause new “College and Career Ready Standards”. This can not continue as more money should be going into the Arizona education funding, instead of more money being taken
Any student found to have violated this policy to include the use of marijuana shall be expelled for a period of not less than one (1) calendar year, the director of schools shall be the only one to be able to modify this rule on a case by case basis.
Possession and use of cannabis, also commonly known as marijuana, is considered illegal. For years marijuana has been an illegal “drug” in most countries. In today’s world a few countries have legalized cannabis while others are still progressing toward it. In particular, small amount of marijuana have been allowed in places such as Europe, North America and South America. In the United States in particular, states such as Washington and Colorado have also legalized the usage of marijuana for medical/recreational purposes. On the other hand, numerous penalties are enforced pertaining the use or possession of cannabis where it is not legal. The chance of the penalties being small are seldom; offenders often receive severe punishments. Possession of small quantities of marijuana is not punished the same way as possession of large quantities of other illegal narcotics. In this essay, there will be an in-depth argument on the reasons why cannabis should be legalized, and why it should not.
Confusion comes from the varying difference from one state to another and even one city to the next. As medical marijuana is legalized in various states, confusion comes from each state’s definition of “medical”(Leonard). In Texas, for example, the marijuana needs to be prescribed by a physician, however, since marijuana is legal for medical use, it cannot be prescribed, only recommended (Leonard). With almost 41 states legalizing marijuana, it seems as though the drug would be reclassified rather than stay a Class 1 drug which is “a category reserved for substances with “no currently accepted medical use and a high potential for abuse”(Leonard). States are faced with the balance between legalization for those who need help and not creating an ease of access for those who abuse it. For this reason, much confusion comes from the differences in drug enforcement and drug sentences from state to state, especially in a post-”war on drugs” era. These very laws have severe punishments that can Now, especially as drug laws cause confusion state to state, more effective policies need to be made in order to ensure justice and correct punishment for each
A smoker would theoretically have to consume nearly fifteen hundred pounds of marijuana within about 15 minutes to induce a lethal response... In strict medical terms, marijuana is far safer than many of the foods we commonly consume. For example, eating ten raw potatoes can result in a toxic response. By comparison, it is physically impossible to eat enough marijuana to induce death." DEA Administrative Law Judge Francis L. Young. Between 9 and 17 million Americans are occasional users of marijuana and about 3 million are daily users. As many as 40 million have tried the drug for many different reasons such as experimentation and peer pressure (Schleichert 40). Much of America's youth is experimenting with the drug and
In keeping with the College’s mandate to serve and protect the public, this policy sets out expectations for physicians relating to the prescribing of dried marijuana for medical purposes (College of Physicians
In our society, especially in recent times, the topic of interest for many is the highly stigmatized drug marijuana. Marijuana is currently under national debate on whether it should be legalized on a federal level. A myriad of news and media outlets report that marijuana is legal in multiple states for numerous reasons, but the federal government still fails to legalize it as of now. To provide insight, marijuana also referred to as cannabis, is derived from the leaves and flowers of the hemp plant and can be used in many ways—smoking, edibles (food or drink), vaporizing, tinctures, ingestible oils, topical lotions or balms, and dabbing (delivers a higher THC in the form of hash oil, wax, or shatter). THC and CBD are called cannabinoids, which are the major chemicals in marijuana that assist the user for medical purposes or recreationally. As stated by Americans for Safe Access (ASA), “The federal government claims that marijuana is not medicine and in Gonzales v. Raich (2005) the United States Supreme Court held that the federal government has the constitutional authority to prohibit marijuana for all purposes… States have recognized marijuana’s medical value” (Americans for Safe Access). Furthermore, marijuana is used recreationally and medicinally in some states and the District of Columbia under state specific laws. Although the use of cannabis is legal in certain states, in the federal government’s eyes, marijuana use,
Marijuana usage is a topic that has been discussed for some time now but the recent medical and recreational legalization of this drug has brought about a new area of unchartered territory. The business industry will have to revise many of their employment and safety requirements. After viewing some current policies many businesses are likely to be forced to established new protocols for intra and inner state practices. There are many types of complications as to why the marijuana usage laws should stay at the federal level and not within the state.
Some students figure that Marijuana is a social drug and can help you meet people, make friends, and expand your horizions. However, these students are the same students who stay inside all day high on “dope.” These students living in a “haze” are so blinded; they’re foolishly mistaken to belive that this
I have to admit that I really never imagined that the idea of a marijuana product that would cause me to salivate. While other notions might come to mind when considering cannabis, adjectives like tasty, delectable, scrumptious, yummy, and mouth watering have never been among them. But all that is quickly changing.
