As previously stated Microsoft’s success regarding career development, and the implementation of human resource strategies rests upon three factors: the ability to recruit and retain quality talent; the ability to ensure that the aforementioned talent receives the tools required to achieve; and the fostering of continual innovation and reinvention. Despite the company's success with various facets relating to career development such as; creating autonomy through a lifestyle balanced with work and recreation, as well as managerial competency and feedback acknowledgment, the company does lag behind in some areas. One in particular to note is that of employee retention. According to Becky Peterson, an enterprise tech reporter with Business …show more content…
This uncertainty further breads a decreased level of job security -a central aspect of career development-. In his 1998 research paper, Satisfaction with job security as a predictor of organizational commitment and job performance in a multicultural environment, Darwish Yousef wrote on the impact of job security, regarding longevity, as it relates to factors such as performance. In this study, he found that “satisfaction with job security is positively correlated with both organizational commitment and job performance”. As such we can see that the security one feels within a position can have a direct result upon their ‘organizational commitment’; their likelihood of remaining, not only with a company but remaining productive and satisfied within their work environment for a longer period due to the reduced stress of uncertain employment. In our recommendation to Microsoft, it is our belief that the focus for future developments in the HR sector should be around the fostering of job security in order to improve retention rates. In order to meet these goals, it is proposed that Microsoft implement policies that attempt to foster a sense of mobility, hospitality, and perspective growth while still acknowledging the uniqueness of the modern landscape with respect to the individuality and career goals of each employee. To begin Microsoft need to ensure that there is not only vertical mobility but also lateral mobility options available within

This case is about hiring and employee retention processes centered on new college graduates that, instead of offering ideal and permanent career pathways to these recent graduates and new employees, turn out to become for them a platform or a launch-pad from which they hunt for their dream careers after a couple of years. Despite the costs associated with and the high turnover trend caused by it, this practice continued over time and became increasingly unsustainable, with a rise in job insecurity, and subsequently a reduction in job satisfaction and organizational commitment that come with it. One of the most successful companies in this century is Microsoft. Retaining employees is one way the turnover rate can decrease, Branham (2000), focuses on retaining valuable employees by incorporating four key elements. The first key elements is, “be a company that people want to work for”. There are many companies that have been labeled as, “employers of choice”. These employers all have something in common, which is how they value their employers (Branham, 2000). They treat their employees with respect and like family. With being an “employer of choice,” people are the most valuable asset; not just customers but employees too. Many companies go above and beyond for their customers, but not for their employees, yet they wonder why they are losing valuable talent.
Job security can simply be defined as the feeling of an employee feeling that he or she belongs to and plays an important role in the success of an organization. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, “layoff measures in 2015 were down from 2014, which shows more stability in the economy.” However, employees under at-will remain cautious about feeling a sense of security in the work place. This is simply due to the fact that their employment can be terminated at any time with or without probable cause. In turn, this creates a culture of fear at times within companies who are struggling financially.
