Approximately every four years, high-ranking members of each tribe form public gatherings. The public gatherings appear to be completely random as there is hardly any structure to them. For instance, the number of representatives from each tribe and the location of the gatherings change after each conference. The content of these meetings vary widely as well. Every aspect of Nacirema society is up for discussion at these meetings including natural medicines, monetary regulation, and other various civic issues. At the beginning of these gatherings, all of the tribe officials, the peacemakers, and all of the tribe members that are present stand in lines with their right hands crossing over to the left side of their bodies and collectively chant an incantation that is representative of the tribe. Afterwards, a topic is introduced and every official is given a small amount of time to talk about it. The other officials may comment on what has been said, and for the most part it is peaceful discussion. If the officials talk for too long, or if the discussions get too heated, the peacemakers may step in and change the subject or direct the conversation into …show more content…
We hold debates between the Republican and Democrats before the primaries, and then we hold debates between the two remaining presidential candidates. Upon first glance it may appear that the presidential debates are held to get to know the candidate’s positions on the various issues that are important to the American people; however, the format of the debates make it difficult to accomplish that task. Instead, it is more plausible that these debates are held in order to discover what the candidates are like personally because the debates provide ample opportunities for us to discover the candidate’s values. Ultimately, we want to find out the values that these potential presidents have because we want someone we trust to lead the
In order to have a government that is run by people; specifically, people that must choose a candidate to vote for, its seems fit that it would be important that there be adequate means of illustrating each candidate’s positions on all of the issues that the constituents care about. Presidential debates are the means of showcasing a candidates’ policies to the nation and at the same time they allow the citizens in the democratic society to make a more informed decision about their vote than they otherwise would have without a debate.
Jay Van Bavel’s 2016 article addresses an important and relevant issue: voters’ deeply divided perceptions of presidential candidates. According to Bavel, approximately 70 million viewers tuned in to watch the final presidential debate on October 19, 2016. In theory, one would be valid in assuming that while processing such an event, everyone should be experiencing the same reality—all are watching the same debate, hearing the same words said by the same people. Strangely, however, this is not the case: in reality, Republicans and Democrats concluded the debates with drastically separate conclusions on the candidates. According to a CNN poll referenced to within Bavel’s article, Hillary Clinton won the first debate, with 67% compared to Donald Trump’s 27%. However, a further examination of these statistics reveals an obvious divergence between the democratic and republican parties. According to democrats, Clinton won (89% to 5%); according to republicans, Trump won (54% to 28%). Why is there such a great divide when both parties were presented with the exact same information? People do not see the world objectively—without the influence of personal biases. Instead, people reinforce the goals and values of the partisan group they identify with, allowing the party’s views to color their perceptions of identical information (Bavel).
America is considered as a global superpower, and has a critical role to play in the global socioeconomic and political landscape. Critical examination of US presidential elections show that they draw widespread attention from across the globe. In many instances, the major political parties differ significantly on policies, a prospect that may work to the advantage or the disadvantage of the candidate for Democratic Party of the Republican Party. After months of the long bruising primaries, the GOP conducted its convention in Cleveland while the democratic sect held their convention in Philadelphia. The speeches delivered in the two conventions had significant policy differences which are likely to influence voting
Upon entering the NA meeting I had mixed feelings. I didn’t know how to come to the meeting knowing my intentions were neither to give nor receive help. I felt like I was an intruder. I didn’t understand why I should betray others or act as if I was an addict who chose not to interact in the healing and recovering process. All of those things pushed me into the door of a meeting and open my mind to the hurt behind the physical appearance of these people. Their stories were heart wrenching. They all wanted help or do be noticed at some point of their lives before they became addicts. Never knowing the decisions they chose to take that first hit would turn their
This year’s presidential election has been riddled with controversy and drama. The two presidential nominees, Hillary Clinton, and Donald Trump, each have questionable acts. As voting time approaches and the debates come to an end many individuals must decide who is fit to run the country. By considering their backgrounds, verifying the validity of their policies, and brining into consideration their performance in the debates, a suitable president should be found.
Looking back at the article Nacirema, I feel my daily routines are weird and tradition as a Chinese. After reading the article Nacirema, it shows that the belief of American think their culture is superior to others, they tendency to view other cultures from their own views. Some of the traditional culture, maybe looks weird in another people’s eye. For example, as a Chinese, we eat chicken feet, duck feet, and chicken viscera which American people don’t like it. We like to have a morning tea with family to eat dimsum, deep-dried dough sticks, steamed buns, tofu pudding, noodles, and rice for breakfast, but the American people like to have some coffee, milk, eggs, fired potatoes, cereal, toast, and pancake. I like salty stuff, but American
Because truth contains the power to bring our nation together, prosperity to our citizens, and purpose to our role as a nation, I seek to let it be my guide in policy. As I compete in Congressional Debate, I draft legislation that knows no party, with policy that adjusts to the current geopolitical landscape. True conservatism is not exhaustive conservative policy. True conservatism responds to the voice of the nation at that time. One day after debate, one of my opponents commended me for flexibility and thoughtfulness in debate. That commendation means more to me than any first place award. Participating in Congressional Debate is one of the most fulfilling parts of my life. In the debate chamber, I speak not for points or awards, but to guide people to truth. I speak not always to persuade or convince, but to share perspectives that create the kind of dynamic existence President Coolidge achieved in his life, constant examination of policy for his constituents. My desire is that my speeches do not fool others into supporting one policy over another. My desire is to share policy options, only for the most effective to be chosen at the end of the round. This is not always the policy on which behalf I spoke – dynamic
For my observation. I attended an NA meeting. It was in Hemet CA, on a Tuesday night. The building was called “Red Dog Group”. I had walked in, and told the lady at the front desk that I was here to sit in on a meeting and observe it for my health class. She said”Of course you can, just wait here for about another 10 minutes and you will go in with everyone.”
The second presidential debate demonstrates an indecisive clash between opposite personalities; the rehearsed demeanor of Hillary Clinton juxtaposes the raw audacity of Donald Trump. Despite their dissimilar appearance, the candidates employ like strategies – they deflect accusations and criticize their adversary. Clinton suffers to succeed in this format. Neither knowledge of policy nor experience in office effectively counter accusations against personal character. This observation is nonetheless irreverent. Although Trump dominates the debate format, he alienates the electorate.
No campaign in the history of presidential runnings has ever been the same. Yes, past campaigns and presidential candidates have shown their similarities between each other, but none has had the same events occur. The major variable is time. Society has shown a history of changing ideals and appeals. Each year, slowly but surely, society’s view is shaping and shifting. The presidential candidates know this factor and have to change with society to gain their social appeal. Within this time shift, we can analyze past polls and outcomes of primaries that have shown to be somewhat misleading.
Frank asserts that the public’s greatest concern is the selection of nominees, and primaries have taken away the news value from the conventions. With the exception of Media outlets covering candidates’ acceptance speeches, due to their relationship with public policy, News outlets are paying less attention to covering conventions. Now, it is much easier to determine which
With the 2016 election in full swing, millions of Americans have locked in their party of choice as November 8th approaches. The two candidates and the conversation surrounding them this year have never been more polarizing: Republican vs. Democrat, businessman against politician, man facing woman, and high-energy in contrast to calm and collected. Eventually, one will be chosen to hold the highest office in the country, and will give a speech, known as an inaugural address to talk about their intentions as president of the US. This essay will focus on two specific addresses, one from Ronald Reagan, and the other from Barack Obama. Even though inaugural addresses are somewhat far apart in the time each was given and who was presenting them, they are very similar in how they
There are many qualities a presidential candidate should endure, however, as a high school student I believe that if someone wants to rule our country, they should strongly be able to have the ability to create trust, temperament, and persuasiveness. These qualities will powerfully help the presidential candidate to have leadership competence, communication and negotiation skills, hospitality, and take better decisions. A presidential candidate may have a great campaign that will let the citizens have an idea of their priorities, however, they don’t have a political perspective of the difficulties of running our nation. Honesty is a huge conflict between the candidates, because they need to be trusted by the American people; they should have
In the first Presidential debate, the nominee presented their policy descriptions for their tenure of their presidency. This is considered to be the most consequential debate of 2016. In the debate the moderator Holt, asked all the important questions from both the nominee, the answers of which every American wants to know about for making their decision, to select the future president for the betterment for the American population. Their future policies have been discussed in the first
The five candidates for the Democratic nomination for president (Hillary Clinton, Bernie Sanders, Martin O'Malley, Jim Webb and Lincoln Chafee) had over two hours to compare their proposals to address the problems of America. The first Democratic debate showed the benefit of having five Candidates’ underside of a dozen candidates, was better in relation to time and especially to don’t have someone like Donald Trump. The debate was not a tournament of personalities, full of insults and grand statements. It was a much filled with information and very civilized.
