The National Republicans were a political party created after the Election of 1824. Although John Quincy Adams lost to Andrew Jackson in the Election of 1828 the party opposed to Jackson was the National Republican Party, or Anti-Jacksonians created and run by Henry Clay. It had a nationalistic outlook, and wanted to use national resources to build a strong economy. Its platform was a system of nationally financed internal improvements and a protective tariff, which would promote faster economic development. The National Republicans were significant in that they were the opposition party to the Democrats and Andrew Jackson, but also, with their strong economical policies and ideas, fostered the creation of the Market Economy.

The Republican Party has a total of 18 US presidents that were in office, the most of any political party to date. The Republican Party started with Abraham Lincoln and working its way down to George W Bush. The first start of the Party was in February, 1854, when antislavery Whigs met together to discuss a formation of a new political party. One such meeting on March 20th, 1854, in Wisconsin, is remembered as the Founding meeting of the Republican Party. The Civil War made the Republican Party victorious, but by 1876, the Republican Party had lost control of the South, but it continued to dominate the presidency until the election of FDR in 1933. Its humble beginnings began its triumphant start in its victories in congress as well as the world.

After his receipt of the Republican nomination this summer, the ascent of Donald Trump has left many commentators and political scientists in a stupor. How could this extremist, controversy-inducing, suspiciously orange-toned man with little-to-no political experience succeed in garnishing the support of the Republican electorate? How has the party that once abolished slavery come to a point where it has justified the discrimination of minorities and the unfair treatment of women? Over the past several decades, the Republican party has witnessed a significant shift and—encouraged by an increase in social justice campaigns and the growing threat to societal norms—authoritarianism has begun to claw its way out of the shadows. A largely overlooked theory in political science, authoritarianism holds the key to explaining the Trump phenomenon and the further polarization of the American political system that has attributed to it.

The Democratic Party was formed in 1792. Its name was adopted in the 1830s during Jackson’s presidency. It is the “world’s oldest existing political party” (Democratic Party). The Northern and Southern Democrats had issues dealing with slavery, which caused them to split in 1860. According to the “Democratic Party”, the Southern Democrats wanted to protect “slavery in all the territories while many Northern Democrats resisted.” The party was also known as the "white man 's party" and demonized the Republican Party as being "Negro dominated," even though whites were in control” (Democratic Party).

​The Democratic Party is one of the oldest political parties in the nation. During this time many things began to change, like the social, economic and as well as the political part. It was a time when President Jackson became the seventh president. “As President Jackson alienated some of his intimal supporters who would join the opposition to him, but his actions cemented the loyalty of far more of his initial voters as well as many others” (Michael F. Holt).

If I had to specifically choose which political party had the most influence on my life and political views I would say it is the Republican Party. The Republican Party supports most of my current views on American issues in the United States. I think its safe to say that I am more Republican than Democrat. Some of the few specific views that I hold that are influenced by Republicans are; I am pro-life, I believe in limiting social welfare to unemployed Americans, I favor a continued military presence in unstable Middle Eastern regions, and I strongly oppose gun control.

During the 19th century and first half of 20th century, conventions generated news, a common interest shared amongst Americans. Frank examines the history behind both the Republican and Democratic conventions in 1952, when the conventions of both parties were regarded as extremely news-worthy. According to Farrel and Webb, political parties exist primarily for their elective function. A political party is an organization of people possessing similar political opinions and aspirations with the capacity to recommend candidates for public office through elections to ensure majority of the nominated candidates get elected. However, it is one thing for a candidate to be nominated by a political party and quite another for the candidate to identify with the party.

Senate Republicans are pushing for a $1.5 trillion tax cut over the next decade. They claim this tax cut will positively stimulate the U.S. economy and offset the federal deficit with more economic growth. Critics say this will only accelerate the federal deficit. On January 16th 2016, The Taiwanese people will head to the polls to elect their new president from three different candidates. The three candidates and their political parties are Eric Chu of the nationalist Kuomintang party, Tsai Ing Wen, of the liberal Democratic Progressive Party, and lastly James Soong of the center right People First Party. This election can be viewed as a fork in the road for Taiwan’s future. Down the right fork, with the Kuomintang and to closer economic and political ties with the People’s Republic of China towards eventual unification. Or down the left fork with the Democratic Progressive Party, and embrace the status quo, that one day, to the fear of the mainland, may lead to independence. The outcome of this election may greatly affect the relationship between China and Taiwan, which is often labeled as Cross Strait Relations, but could also spill over to China and the United States relations, due to the fact the United States has vowed to defend Taiwan from any military aggression from the People’s Republic of China. A United States - China relationship that is already tense. This winter, not only the eyes of Taiwan will be watching the election closely, but also China and the United States.
