North Carolina Historic Landmarks

North and South Carolina were one colony until 1729. Carolina was named to honor Charles IX of France and then Charles I and Charles II of England. Carolina is rooted in Latin and comes from the word Caroliinus. This word is derived from the name Carolus, translated as "Charles." The North Carolina was a colony which has few nicknames like the Old North State. In 1729, Carolina was divided into northern and southern sections. "The Old North State" is a reference to the northern section. The stadehood date of this colony is november 21, 1789.

Since it is one of the largest privately owned house in the U.S., it attracts a lot of tourists. About one million tourist visit this house each year. Before a railroad was built near the city in 1880, Asheville was relatively quiet . After the railroad was built, tourists began visiting the city. Of these tourist was George Washington Vanderbilt. He was visiting the city with his mother to find aid for her chronic malaria. At that time, Asheville was known to have a “healing environment” due to its altitude and climate.

Project: The Middle Tennessee History Coalition (MTHC), in collaboration with the Tennessee State Library and Archives the North Carolina State Library, and the University of North Carolina, proposes a project that will digitize the Colonial and State Records of North Carolina. This is a collection of approximately 9,400 documents that cover a period from European settlement to the founding of the United States and beyond. All twenty-six volumes will be digitized. The colonial records of North Carolina were originally compiled before 1886 by William Saunders, and covered the period between early settlement of the colony and 1776. Another North Carolina feature is the Great Smoky Mountains,The Great Smoky Mountains are a mountain range, along the Tennessee to North Carolina and borders the southeastern United States. There are many more land forms such as The Piedmont. The Piedmont, is a plateau area located in the southeastern part of the United States, and runs through North Carolina . It sits between the Atlantic Coastal Plain and the main Appalachian Mountains.North Carolina has a warm climate and it averages 5 inches of snow a year. Although, this also is different across the state. Along the coast, most areas get less than 2 inches of snow each

The builder of this seventeen room Greek revival mansion was Stephen S. Speakman. In the early 1840s, the elderly Speakman fell in love with a much younger woman, Sarah Bush, whose father owned a slave-holding plantation in Kentucky. Upon asking her hand in marriage, his bride-to-be refused to marry him unless he built her a southern plantation-style mansion. In 1845, with the use of his father-in-law’s slaves, Speakman erected his mansion on a five hundred acre plot next to Loughery Creek with every brick baked on site (Historical Marker Project).

The area surrounding the Dragon was one of the last areas of North Carolina to be settled due to its inhospitable terrain. The southern Appalachian Mountains are made up of two separate ranges; the eastern range is the Blue Ridge Mountains, and the western range is known as the Great Smoky Mountains. For thirty-six miles along the TN/NC border the GSM are more than 5k feet in altitude with 16 peaks stretching to more than 6k feet. All of this altitude translates to treacherous travel, especially for the pioneers in their day, but also for us as motor-sport enthusiasts today.

North Carolina “Esse Quam Videri” (“To Be Rather Than To Seem”) is the state motto for North Carolina, a very interesting state with a moderate climate, scenic beauty, a culture rich in history and the arts, and much more. It is located on the southeastern part of the U.S. and has a very diverse landscape. It has everything from warm beaches to snowy mountains. North Carolina covers 53,819 square miles with more than 300 miles of Atlantic coastline and has the highest mountain peaks east of the Rockies (“NC.gov.”). Virginia colonists founded the Province of Carolina, an English colony in North America in 1653.

Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia, Shenandoah National Park provides some wonderful views and scenery including views of the Shenandoah River, the valley, lush greenery, and areas of wilderness. Around 40 percent of the land here has been designated as wilderness and is therefore protected. One of the things that draws many people to this park is the Skyline Drive, which runs through the whole length of the park and is now known as a National Scenic Byway. This is a wonderful scenic drive that enables you to enjoy breathtaking surroundings. Millions of people head here each year, particularly in the fall when the scenery is particularly beautiful

To look at the mass of woodland and the Emory River is a sight that will take your breath away. Oakdale is full of so much history its unbelievable. Looking at the old building structures is just enough to show how much history Oakdale has hiding. This is one reason why giving back to my community is important to me. I want to keep my community beautiful and I want everyone to know just how marvelous Oakdale really is.
