Born on November 11, 1885 in San Gabriel, California—George Smith Patton Jr’s story begins. “His ancestors had fought in the Revolutionary War, the Mexican War and the Civil War, and he grew up listening to stories of their brave and successful endeavors.” Son of George Smith Patton Sr. a lawyer and eventual district attorney in Los Angeles and wife, Ruth Wilson—Patton spent most of his early years alongside younger sister, Anne (called Nita) in the state of California and eventually went on to the Virginia Military Institute, graduating from WestPoint in 1909 and marrying wife, Beatrice (Bea) Ayer in 1910. While at WestPoint, Patton performed extremely well and became interested in their Sword Team—quickly becoming a highly regarded Swordsman. Once Patton graduated 46 out of 103, he was appointed as a second lieutenant in the cavalry. Patton experienced many struggles while growing up, including suffering from dyslexia and other learning-based challenges while always remaining extremely self-conscious. Determination oftentimes makes us who we are as a person. It is something that is embedded deep inside the human nature. Determination is essentially the “steering wheel” of a person. It is up to the “driver” whether they want to take the effortless street or the harsh road on the mountain. Those who take the more challenging road usually results into a better reward and feeling in contrast to the boring and usual road. Humans, like any other species, would prefer to take the path of least resistance. This is not the case in this topic, it is that humans should be determined to succeed in something, because without determination, nothing would be achieved.

According to John Patton in this chapter five, He focuses on pastoral wisdom (which) involves not only doing, but being and knowing as well. To be and to know in order to act in ways most likely to restore the soul of the sick, visits to the sick must not necessary be long but most import what a pastor brings to those who are separated from their customary life by illness is or her patience (John Patton 61). Additionally, under this topic John Patton talks about what carers for the sick need to know about themselves and the patient (John Patton 62), what carers can do (John Patton 64),what they need to know(John Patton 67) and then he gives some stories of sickness (John Patton 67). Generally I have learnt a lot from this chapter but

(www.merriam-webster.com) This is synonymous with my personal definition of determination. When the end is decided upon, there is no reason or desire to change said goal. A person under the influence of determination is comparable to a train. The train will not change its direction, as it cannot, and no matter what, the train will continue along the tracks until it either reaches its destination, or is stopped by the conductor. For as an example, my plan after high school is to go to college, and then move into the professional world. When confronted about possibly wanting to join the military, my answer is absolutely not. Going to college right after high school has always been my mindset, and there’s no way my determination will let that change. I am the metaphorical train, because my destination is set, and there’s no chance for me to adjust my direction. I will not stray from my goal, because it would mean wrecking myself and all those involved in my endeavors. There will be mountains in front of me, and people I may have to run over to reach my goal, but when one’s mind is set, they will not waver, and neither will I.
