The superior act of living an effective life lies in the pursuit of excellent vision, to move from where we are to where we ought to be, either as a person or as an organization. A health care leader must motivate the organizational team, find how to work with the associates to effectively dedicate their time and energy to achieve the identified goals and objectives through the established vision. The team members need to buy into the vision, where they are currently doing what the leader envisions, the leader must encourage them, keep them on track and set standards for the team by setting goals and objective, flowing from the vision. This will enable the leader to move the health care organization to the expected performance level within the set time period. The leader must ensure that individual responsibilities of the associates are identified, motivated and resources provided to achieve the identified goals. To pursue the vision, I will lead the development of the health care organization’s strategic alignment of clear goals and objectives, to preserve the core mission and encourage progress toward the envisioned future state. Also, I will encourage and provide the direction for the organization without hindering the development of the goals that we expect to accomplish. I believe that we can achieve what we have envisioned in our lives as we consistently not only believe it but confidently work hard toward that belief. Such is my principle and conviction
This essay will first consider the different leadership theories and the evidence that supports those theories within healthcare practice. Highlighting how these theories can enhance patient experience whilst promoting a transparent open culture to healthcare, linking leadership and decision making to a patient scenario experienced by the author. It will then go on to describe the differences between behavioural, trait, transformational leadership models researching the positive and negatives of the theories from a range of academic sources. The third part looks at the importance of clinical decision making in the practice setting, encompassing when and who is responsible for making decision in a healthcare setting (Haycock-Stuart, E and
Leadership is much more than just leading people, it also requires vision. This vision can be focused locally or globally, as long as it provides a goal for the advancement of your organization (Ledlow & Coppola, 2012, p. 141). One such visionary is Ms. Rebecca Onie, co-founder and Chief Executive Officer of Health Leads, and member of the Mayo Clinic Center for Innovation External Advisory Council (Mayo Foundation for Medical Education and Research, 2014, p. 1). While her origins are not based in healthcare, her aspirations and healthcare leadership have changed the way many providers think about healthcare.
Leaders can best be described as those who are capable of having a strong influence over others. They inspire others to reach their maximum potential in order to achieve a common goal (Concept 1, Slide 11, Bullet 8). In a healthcare setting, it is essential for leaders to demonstrate certain abilities. According to the Healthcare Leadership Alliance Model, a leader must excel in five major capacities, which are business skills and knowledge, communication and relationship management, professionalism, leadership, and knowledge of the healthcare system (Concept 1, Slide 21, Bullet 1-6). Each of these components is an essential skill that a leader can use to propel an organization in the right direction.
Like any other businesses these days, most healthcare systems face competition from other facilities around them. In order to be successful in this competition, the organization needs to improve itself every day. As Dye (2010, p. 27) mentioned, the role of the leadership is very important in the organizational changes and improvement since they are responsible for decision making and they create the mission and vision of the company.
The purpose of this article was to explain how three constant change, choice, and principle provide stability in the time of great uncertainty in an effective leadership in a healthcare setting. (Govier, 2009). The difference between management and leadership is that management is concerned mainly with order and consistency while leadership is centered on change and movements. Management focuses on controlling complex process while leadership is about challenging existing ways of doing things and setting new directions in organizations. The author argues that management is about “doing a thing right way” while leadership is about “doing the right things” (Govier, 2009).
With that in mind, health care leaders are asking questions like how can we deliver the best care possible to our patients, involving everyone on their team. Also leading by example with humility and not power would nurture a strong leader-employee relationship. “Executives and all the other managers in the organization must become students of the work, relinquishing their need to (seem to) have all the answers. Most importantly, they must mentor, coach, and teach’ (Toussaint,
Leadership styles are an important quality in healthcare administrators. Transformational leadership is a popular style that is used to “encourage the group to pursue innovative and creative ideas and actions” (Blanken, 2013, para. 42). Leaders engage, mentor, and motivate their followers to change by utilizing the qualities that make them their leader, such as listening to them and including them in the decision making process, and showing interest in their work day while acknowledging their achievements and being honest (Giltinane, 2013). By treating the followers as they wish
There are many hospitals, outpatient clinics, doctors offices, outpatient surgical centers, nursing homes, and other clinics in the United States. There is a truth where these healthcare organizations either survive, thrive, and fail. The key foundations for a thriving healthcare organization is having cultural, operational, and strategic excellence. Leadership is described as the behavior of an individual when directing the activities of a group toward a shared goal. Leadership theory is dynamic and continues to change over time. Truman in1958 described the leader as a person who can enforce the staff to do what they do not desire to do (Azar & Asiabar, 2014). Leadership in the healthcare systems consists of numerous professional groups, departments, and specialties, which involved elaborate and nonlinear interactions between the professional. In order to provide an effective leadership, it should be focus on the dynamic relationship between leadership values, culture, capabilities and the organizational context (Al-Sawai, 2013).
Leadership is a highly sought-after and highly valued commodity. Over the past decade organizations have become increasingly captivated by the idea of leadership. It is often questioned as to what makes a good leader. Many people believe that leadership is a way to improve their personal, social, and professional lives. Many people who work in a healthcare organization know and understand what is needed for them to save lives and treat illnesses but they do not know how to be lead or manage resources allocated to them. To lead means having the capability to encourage other people achieve desired results, face any challenges, and creating the future that the others envision. To manage resources means ensuring that the available resources are allocated and used effectively, ensuring there is synergy between the caregivers and coming up with good incentives and reward schemes.
One of the most exciting aspects of the healthcare industry is that there are so many paths to leadership: some future leaders may begin as practitioners; others may begin as administrators. Ideally, a combination of technical knowledge of the demands of healthcare with managerial experience, coupled with an understanding the human and financial components of running a large healthcare organization is merged in the persona of an ideal leader. Formal programs such as the 'Pathways to Leadership' approach of the Blue Shield of California Foundation offer hands-on experiences such as group problem-solving and role-playing activities along with individualized mentorship for participants who are already established leaders in their fields. The 'Pathways to Leadership' program participants regularly partake in in weekly projects and assignments and "participants implement customized leadership projects at their clinics that address individual leadership plans and organizational needs" (The pathway to leadership, 2011, Blue Shield of California Foundation). This is one example of a private organizational effort to improve healthcare leadership, but many of these same principles could also be implemented on an institutional level.
