In the spring of 2015, I won the Underclassmen French Department award. This award was presented to a student who had taken French 1, French 2 and was currently enrolled in French 3. Kathleen Vogt, French Department Chair claimed my qualifications for this award were highest cumulative GPA in French 1 through three, outstanding effort in the classroom, as well as active participation in French Club. Winning this award took three years of hard work and dedication. I had to learn an entire new language and be the best at it for three years straight. Intrinsic motivation is what kept me going when it got challenging. I studied for hours to work on my pronunciation, spelling, and grammar. At the end of my second year in French, I almost stopped
When a person plans or wants to do something, he or she has a motivation for that specific thing. In other words, when a person does something, that person has a reason why he or she should do that thing. Not always there is a reason to do something, but sometimes may be many reasons that are backing a person to take those actions to do it. This happens not only to humans, or living organisms, but also in nonliving organisms. An example is when a rock which had bounced after it hit the floor while falling down. Scientists may tell some of the reasons why the rock does that kind of action, but they cannot tell all of the reasons that back the rock’s actions. A similar thing, as the scientists, was Alfie Kohn trying to do in his essay, “Why
The United States of America is known for being a country filled with people of many different ethnic backgrounds. Likewise, the student population in schools is just as diverse as it continues to grow. Lynch (2015) notes that schools are expected to teach their students “how to synthesize cultural differences into their knowledge base” as this will help “facilitate students’ personal and professional success in a diverse world” (para. 8). Educators must be able to provide for the diverse needs of students and are expected to equip students with skills that can lead to healthy development as it can affect higher levels of student achievement and students have more opportunities of success in their future. Providing students with tools and skills requires an awareness and acceptance of their ethnic identity. Once students have developed self-acceptance about their ethnic identity, they can begin to feel empowered and motivated to do well. Through cultural empowerment, students of color can develop intrinsic motivation and achieve academic success.
Motivation can be defined as the desire or inspiration to carry out specific tasks or to do something. Motivation is required when goals are being set and more so in their execution. In a work setting, motivation can be defined as a process through which individuals choose between alternative forms of behavior with the aim of achieving personal objectives. The goals sought by individuals can be extrinsic or relatively tangible such as monetary rewards and promotion, or intrinsic or intangible such as self esteem or job satisfaction (Armstrong, 2006). In learning, the desire to attain good grades is what motivates a student to study hard everyday as they prepare for the exam. On the other hand, for a teacher to put his best foot forward, he
The success of any business depends on the productivity and satisfaction of its employees. Employees need to be motivated to work. Motivation can be defined as the inner force that drives individuals to accomplish personal and organizational goals. Motivation can be either intrinsic or extrinsic. For an individual to be motivated in a work situation there must be a need, which the individual would have to perceive a possibility of satisfying through some reward. Intrinsic motivation stems from motivations that are inherent and arise from performing the task of the job itself, which the individual gets a feeling of either positive or negative motivation as a result of
In the words of the late John F. Kennedy, “leadership and learning are indispensable to each other.” Through various leadership positions in organizations such as Shop with a Bulldawg and Delta Epsilon Psi I’ve learned in order to be an effective leader, one must be willing to interact with and learn from others. By bringing this mindset to KYCOM, my peers and I can mutually benefit from each other through a positive and motivated learning approach, which will help each KYCOM student flourish in the classroom. I am more than enthusiastic to be a part of the KYCOM community because I believe the education and devotion to primary and rural health care I will receive will be second to none. Through an enthusiastic learning approach and my power
Intrinsic Motivation in Public Organizations is an essential principal. It is clear that employee engagement and motivation is a vital part of the workplace. We spend almost more time with them as a full time employee than our own family. Fellow workers become our second family with the workplace acting as a home away from home. Everyone wants a healthy environment to come to. The public sector and organizations are more challenging to motivate due to the application of ethical guidelines and outside influence from others. Society sees the public sector as overpaid and underworked. Unfortunately, this leads to low morale and negatively impact employee positive engagement. The public organizations also suffer from a lack of funds compared to
Leaders who rely on extrinsic motivators are consumed by how they are viewed by others and seek superficial rewards. Extrinsic motivators include wealth accumulation, power, titles, elevated social status, and prestige (George, 2015). On the other hand, leaders who pursue intrinsic motivators more self-aware and seek profound rewards that go beyond the surface of superficiality. Intrinsic motivators may include personal growth, helping other people, taking on social causes, creating great products or services, and making a difference in the world through your efforts (George, 2015).
stages such as I did when using the role of a mother in playing house. I used perspectives and traits I believe I presents a mom such as cooking and cleaning to represent the self of a mother. This is an example of Mead theory of the play and game stage.
Young children are compelled to learn because of their natural curiosity in life. Older children seem to need a push in the direction to learn. This describes the two types of motivation. Intrinsic motivation describes the young child. It is motivation from within and the desire someone feels to complete a task, including natural curiosity. Intrinsic motivation is anything we do to motivate ourselves without rewards from an outside source. “In relation to learning, one is compelled to learn by a motive to understand, originating from their own curiosity” (Rehmke-Ribary, 2003 p.intrinsic).
Students want and need work that enables them to demonstrate and improve their sense of themselves as competent and successful human beings. This is the drive toward mastery. But success, while highly valued in our society, can be more or less motivational. People who are highly creative, for example, actually experience failure far more often than success. Biehler (p. 225) claims that studies show that when CAI used in conjunction with a teacher's lessons, is particularly beneficial for low-achieving and young students.
Not only do I merit an award for the reason that coming from a single parent family can be arduous, but more importantly to mention that not allowing a low income to supersede schooling can be strenuous. Furthermore, while attending Auto/Diesel trade school, many classmates weren’t respectable which was bothersome considering the professors had a challenging time providing the knowledge to the sparse amount of students in which wanted to learn. This resulted in the select few personnel to take learning into their own hands. During the first year, my teacher noticed the skills that had been attributed along with the potential that had been desired that made me eligible to participate in the Skills USA competition. Say the least, finishing with a gold medal in the state of New Jersey only made me a more desirable candidate for competing in Skills USA national’s competition. Placing high may not have been such an option, but more significantly it introduced me to what the diesel industry fully entailed. Toward the end of the second year in the Auto/Diesel program furthering my education had been more enticing than
Effective teaching is more than just helping students to become knowledgeable and skilled. It helps to make certain that students absorb information in a way that shows the student has a full understanding of the information that is being learned. “Teachers can have great influence in creating opportunities for students to engage in learning…” (Wery and Thomson, 2013). Teachers put in all the time and effort needed to help a student be their best. Effective teaching is teachers who put together games and tutor students in their free time all so students can achieve great things.
For professional appearance and attitude, I rated myself as good. I was dressed appropriately wearing khakis, a ¾ sweater, and flats. My hair was neatly fixed as well as my makeup. My attitude was also professional. The teacher gave control of the classroom over to me, and I believe that I fulfilled my role as the teacher. At the end of the lesson, I thanked the teacher and the class for allowing me to teach that day. For time management: lesson flow, pacing, full use of time allotted, I rated myself as fair. The motivation and presentation sections of the lesson did not last as long as I had planned. More time was spent on the activity and every student progressed to the enrichment activity. I was still able to teach within the 35-40 minute range. For class management: student discipline and participation, I rated myself as good. I repeatedly had to tell students to stay in their seat and to be quiet. I also had to end an argument between two students over a marker. When picking a student helper, I encouraged students to be quiet by telling them I would only pick the student that was being the quietest. For preparedness and organization, I rated myself as good. I was fully prepared for the lesson. My concept map was fully interactive, each piece that was needed for the activity was bagged for each individual student, and my enrichment activity was neatly organized. I also prepared extra bags for the activity in the event the students lost or needed an extra piece. For
What is motivation? What influences it? The term motivation can be defined in different ways. Motivation can simply defined as “ a need that, if high, is evident in a strong desire to achieve, to excel, to reach a high level of excellence” (Lefrancois 430). To become motivated, one must have a positive attitude to a variety of learning skills. Some factors that influence motivation include our peers, friends, parents, and environmental settings. Division four being high school division, attention is focused towards learning and what methods can be used. Students at this stage are more eager and develop a sense of what he or she wants to do and accomplish in upcoming adulthood. With a division comes a group of intelligent theorists. All
As an important starting point, motivation is the prime motivation of the learning process. This is also true for research.
