What is motivation? What influences it? The term motivation can be defined in different ways. Motivation can simply defined as “ a need that, if high, is evident in a strong desire to achieve, to excel, to reach a high level of excellence” (Lefrancois 430). To become motivated, one must have a positive attitude to a variety of learning skills. Some factors that influence motivation include our peers, friends, parents, and environmental settings. Division four being high school division, attention is focused towards learning and what methods can be used. In Mel Levine’s article All Kinds of Minds, he states that “motivation drops from a bad grade, family issues, what they hear on the bus, or a remark from the teacher” ( Levine 38). Such emotions such a those given can make an impact on how he or she views themselves plus can last for a long period of time. In contribution to the attribution theory, the outcomes of behavior will take a rise. The best concept in overlooking those emotions is simply developing a positive state of mind. The more the student thinks positively, the less negative emotions will intrude. In Vygotsky’s theory of social and cultural influences, he emphasized his theory through three important themes: Culture, Language and Zone of Proximal Growth (ZPG). With culture, adolescents in the fourth division of education begin to integrate with people of different cultures. It gives them the advantage to listen to different beliefs, values, norms and attitudes of other people. It will have the student thinking and how he or she can understand a given theory. Second is language, the main component when it comes to communication. Similar to culture except learning through symbols, logic and sign language. For example: Janice is deaf, she may be unable to hear but can communicate with sign language and gestures. In the Zone of Proximal Growth, the student cannot do a task without the guidance of a supporter.
Motivation is having a reason or reasons to act/behave in a particular way. It creates “drive” in people whether it is in pursuit of a goal, or the need to complete an activity. It produces enthusiasm and a willingness to achieve in both a work environment and in your personal life. Motivation can be increased and decreased in line with the incentives on offer.
Motivation is the key to supporting and advancing the learning of children and young people within my class. Motivation affects the nature of an individuals behaviour, the strength of the behaviour, and the persistence of the behaviour. Abraham Maslow introduced the concept of self-actualization. This is the idea that we use our abilities to our fullest potential. If we can convince our students that they are capable of fulfilling their goals then they are on their way to self-efficacy. (Elliot, 2000 p.335). Self-actualization is the highest goal to reach in motivation. It is placed at the top of Maslow’s pyramid called the hierarchy of needs. This pyramid includes five needs that must be met before self-actualization can develop. The idea of Maslow’s hierarchy of needs is that if basic needs are not met, motivation cannot occur. Lev Vygotsky was an educator and a theorist known primarily for his sociocultural theory. Vygotsky developed the sociocultural theory, which is the theory of human development through social and cultural influences (Aimin, 2013), during the 1920’s-30’s. One of Vygotsky’s focuses was the concept of the zone of proximal development (ZPD), which is the idea of a child being appropriately challenged, this will be discussed further on. His theory stemmed from how children’s learning is impacted greatly through guidance of peers, cultural relations (language), social interactions, teachers and any other adult figure in their environment. In the last 10-15 years, teachers, caregivers, and educators have been attending more to Vygotsky’s theory and his concept of the zone of proximal development, because his work impacts how children learn in their optimal environment (Trawick-Smith, 2015). Vygotsky’s sociocultural theory will be discussed through historical insight, explanation of the theory itself, how sociocultural and society relate to each other, and how the theory is applied in the educational society.
