Essay on Personality Characteristics of Introverts and Extroverts

The faces of introverts and extroverts slightly mimic the way they interact with the world. Typically, introverts are quiet and reserved unless they are in situations that bring out their most outgoing side. Likewise, the introverted face looks like it is not engaged with the world and has neutral features.

I have learned that I am an Ambivert. Which is having characteristics of both an extrovert and introvert. I am a social and outgoing person, but also need time to myself and can be conservative. According to the Big Five Project Personality Test I am more conservative, open minded, and relaxed compared to my significant other. Also, my DISC Personality Report described me as more dominant which would be extrovert characteristics. I used both characteristics in my day to day work, whether in the class room or on the job.

An introvert person is usually someone who enjoys solitude rather than spending time with a group of people. Introverts are often known for being able to “recharge” on their own, rather than recharging by socializing. Extroverts usually gain energy from spending time with other people. For many introverts, being in a social surrounding and spending a lot of time around people can be exhausting, but that doesn’t necessarily mean they don’t like people. It means they choose not to be surrounded by others. But why do introverts want to be alone? Is it because they lack social skills or social interest? Or maybe they create a protective wall where they don’t let people in.

I have always been fascinated with the introvert extrovert spectrum and personality. I have always considered myself to be introverted. When I was younger I was quieter and enjoyed playing by myself or hanging out with my brothers. I always associated being introverted with the stereotypical assessment of what an introvert was described to be. This seems to be described as the loner or the awkward individual and I never understood why this is what people think of being introverted.

On my personality test, I was scored as a 56% extrovert. An extrovert gains and focuses energy on the people around them. I believe most of my energy comes from the people that surround me, including friends and family. I would rather be out in public than alone all the time. In fact, extroverts and introverts are also perceived differently, and they interact with people differently. Extroverts are usually viewed as social butterflies that are outgoing and open. In contrast, introverts are often seen as shy individuals that are more reserved and quiet in nature. Extroverts tend to have numerous friends, but the bonds between those friendships are likely to be superficial. However, introverts usually have tighter relationships between a close group of friends. Extroverts feel comfortable with groups, and they speak up willingly to respond to questions. Introverts are people who spend time thinking and reflecting before they act. Their motivation is internal, which might end up closing them off from the world around them. Introverts usually prefer one-to-one relationships, and only express intimacy with a few family members or close friends. Introverts also love doing activities that allow them to be put in an organizational position. Occasionally, introverts will shut down and close off from all of those around them. Personally, I believe that is a completely accurate description of myself. I also plan out my days ahead of time, and I love being able to put things together. While I sometimes I think that it is a negative thing, I do tend to close off from my circle, which happens to be very small. If I do get to meet my goal of being a teacher, my introversion definitely yields to potential for problems. Getting out of my shell would be a challenge, without a doubt. That being said, my introversion is mostly geared towards others my age. I am usually very comfortable around people that are older or younger than I am, which makes me believe I would probably be okay. Other than having to overcome the challenge of opening up, being an introvert does have upsides, such as having an urge to get things done.
