Climate change and transportation play a big role and it is important to be concerned for our future generations. The use of gasoline cars is a major producer in carbon dioxide emissions, although they are not entirely responsible for it—they play a role in it. Other form of transportations like buses and taxis also contribute to carbon dioxide emissions. The total amount of carbon dioxide emissions from an average car is seventy six percent which comes from usage of a vehicle containing gasoline. Efficiency has increased by twenty percent in regards to electric motors, especially when it comes to their wheels using no power when the car is at rest. Car ownership will increase and with this, improvements in technology could be a vital …show more content…
Through my research question, I hope to learn whether electric vehicles make a big enough difference to help our environment. I also want to explore why we have not gone entirely electric and specific reasons as to why people are afraid of change. People find switching to an electric vehicle to be a huge lifestyle change.
Some people have also adopted the hybrid car trend, although many people think hybrid cars help the environment as well. Hybrid cars still uses some form of a gasoline when it is being used, thus creating carbon dioxide emissions. Whereas, the electric vehicle produces no emissions.
People have numerous reasons as to why they do not want to make the lifestyle change of switching from vehicles that use gasoline to electric vehicles. In Graham-Rowe’s article, people are often concerned with their car battery running out while they are driving. People often cannot easily adapt to huge changes. Owning an electric car vehicle is much different compared to owning an internal-combustion engine car. So how can we make this change positive and easier to jump into? Electric vehicles are typically more expensive than cars with internal combustion engines (144-147). This leads me to another question, is there a way to make electric vehicles more affordable? How can car industries minimize costs? If electric cars are more affordable, maybe more people will be
There are many current technologies focusing on saving the fossil fuels used on cars. One is the commonly known “Hybrid Cars”. Hybrid cars are the current “star” for cars that save fossil fuels. They have an electric battery as well as a combustion engine. That way, you can use electricity from an outlet to charge your car, and while you are on the road, you can rely on electricity to power you until you run out, then you switch to gasoline. This way, you can completely not use fossil fuels such as gasoline for
The world produces around 85 million barrels of oil each day. About a quarter of that percentage goes to the United States of America, which is used up mostly by means of transportations. Most people get around from place to place using a car, a car that is powered by fuel. Everywhere one goes driving, they will eventually run into a gas station but not a charging station for electric cars. Regular cars, burn off fuel that produce emissions (carbon, nitrogen, sulfur) that pollute and harm the environment. Although, there are some positives about switching there are also some problems that could appear but could be fixed. Electric cars have the potential to reduce the amount of pollution in the environment, boost the national economy and help
Gas powered cars are one of the major causes of global warming , and air pollution. Gas powered cars are able to create a lot of carbon dioxide that harm the environment. These cars can also spill certain fluids that can harm the environment. Some of these fluids are motor-oil, gasoline and brake fluid. These fluids can harm humans as well as animals, and can pollute our water systems. Electric cars on the other hand are better for the environment. They use half the energy of a gas powered car, so they don’t cause as much pollution in the air. They also use cleaner energy; electricity, which doesn’t harm the environment as much as
The number one reason why electric cars became popular is the ability to reduce the air pollution. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) almost 30% of greenhouse gas emissions are caused by transportation and most of them could be reduced by driving electric cars. The UK Department for Transport divides vehicle emissions in two categories: direct and life cycle. Direct emission are created by burning fuels while driving on the road. Petrol, diesel, and other alternative-fuel engines produce very high amounts of gases, that not only have impact on our health, but also on climate change. Gases like NO or CO2, that are known for causing many different respiratory illness. There is an estimate of 29,000 deaths a
How would you like to never have to pay for gas again? With gas prices always changing you never know how much money you are going to be feeding to the pump. By trading your car in for an electric powered car, gas will be one less thing to stress about. By making this change you can save the money that you would be spending on your gas guzzling car and put it towards something else. There are many types of electric cars to choose from, ranging from the standard Nissan Leaf at $30,000 to the luxury BMW i8 at $145,000. Not only would you be saving yourself time and money by going electric, but you would also be taking a stride towards a better planet.
Considering electric autos use electricity for power, it is eco-friendly. Specifically, it is energy efficient and operates with fewer natural resources. The fact that these vehicles do not use gas fuel means that there is no pollution emitted like climate harmful greenhouse gasses or nitrogen oxide. Electric cars use a lithium battery to operate, thus preserving hundreds of dollars every year. By way of example, I know that from my own personal experience that I am tired of spending mass amounts of money on gas. In addition, these categories of batteries are rechargeable and can regenerate conveniently at home or at a local charging station. As a result, the batteries alone allow spending less money and using fewer resources.
Electric cars are becoming more and more a part of the world today. Society can see them everywhere, from the streets to TV. Car companies like Nissan and Chevy have their own line up of electric cars that perform well. Now one of the most popular car companies, Tesla, can make the Lamborghini of electric cars. To help lower emission levels and jumpstart the industry, the federal government offers a $7,500 tax credit for buyers of pure electric vehicles (Schaal, 2015). Which brings up some common questions; are all these changes in the car industry a good change from the traditional gas engine and are electric cars truly better than Gas powered vehicles making gas powered vehicles slowly become obsolete. Electric cars barely have any maintenance needed compared to gas powered vehicles. Emissions
The United States burns about a quarter of the world’s oil, half of which the gasoline powered automobile is responsible for (Lovins, 2004). For this reason, efficient, electrical forms of transportation are one of the key factors to limiting America’s oil dependence. Dating back to the late nineteenth century, the idea of the electric car is nothing new, however, in just recent years it has finally made significant progress. Innovations have enabled the electric vehicle to be portable and more attractive in recent years causing more people to make the switch from gas to electric. The transition from gasoline cars to electric vehicles projects significant breakthroughs for American energy including low dependence on oil and a cleaner future.
Imagine never being locked out of your disgusting gas-guzzling vehicle in sub-zero temperatures pumping your car full of toxic chemicals and then later emptying your bank account to pay for the environment killer ever again. This reality is near and approaching faster than ever before. Although, it is not completely beneficial. It is evident that at an international level, electric cars are needed. But, this is only one side of the story, despite common belief, electric vehicles are not always good for the environment. It is true that they will benefit bank accounts, however, the only way for electric cars to improve the environment is if they are powered by clean renewable energy.
Well that is wrong. Yes the alternative can be cheaper at times, but not better for the environment. For example, according to True car a used 2015 gasoline powered vehicle, (2015 Jeep Compass) was listed for $9,233 compared to a used 2015 battery powered car (2015 Nissan Leaf), which was listed for $12,998. Now yes that will save you $3,765 for now, but think about the future. If you care about yourself, your kids, and your kids kids, you would go with the Leaf. According to “Why electric cars are our Future,” by Bill Destler, electric cars are a lot more green than the alternative. He states “Electric vehicles are greener than gasoline powered cars...electric vehicles that consume only a third as much energy in operation are inherently greener no matter what fuel is used to generate the electricity they use.” This evidence alone shows the numbers are there and electric cars are better for the environment by a long shot and could ultimately make the world better in the long
One driving force of change is technology. The automobile industry is constantly focusing on technology in order to make themselves and their cars better. They constantly compete to be the “first” one to have the newest and best idea. One of these ideas is an electric vehicle. GM, Ford, and Toyota all have electric automobiles. GM has the Chevy Volt. Volt One of Ford’s electric cars is the Electric Ranger. Ranger Toyota had the Rav4 EV, but due to discouraging sales it stopped production. “Toyota remains committed to developing an "Eco Vehicle," one that will have a minimal impact on the environment.” Rav4 One purpose of the electric automobiles is to have the ability to drive to work using only electricity. Currently during longer trips you would have to use a combination of electric and gasoline power. Electric Car
The main goal for the following solutions is to reduce CO2 that is continually being pumped into the atmosphere at an unsustainable rate. To reach this goal, humans must work together in order to replace current methods of energy production and human transportation to better fit the earth’s needs. The main focus for humans to reduce CO2 emissions is centered on transportation and energy consumption because these two variables are the most impactful on the environment. If eco-friendly energy solutions are adopted along with sustainable means of transportation then it would greatly reduce CO2 emissions and even has the potential to reduce CO2 build up in the atmosphere.
Conventional vehicles burn fossil fuels and emit exhaust fumes to the atmosphere. Not only have gasoline vehicles depleted natural resources, they also have caused severe environmental pollutions, especially in some populous nations such as China and India. [1] CO2 is the main contributor of the greenhouse effect. 97% of greenhouse emission is carbon dioxide. And in turn, road transportation has become the largest sector in producing carbon dioxide. [2] Because of the decreasing natural resources and the increasing environmental pollution, scientists focus more on new technologies that can help reduce those consequences. However, even though scientists hope hybrid cars could substitute traditional cars in order to reduce
Cars powered by electricity are referred to as electric cars. The type of car started to appear in the year 1999 in the state of California. They had also been manufactured in the early 1900,s. The cars were preferred because they did not make a lot of noise while travelling which created a pleasant experience for the users. Unlike the cars that used gasoline to function, electric cars were not tedious when starting and maintenance. Cars using gasoline pollute the environment by producing carbon dioxide gas which significantly contributes to the process of global warming. One gallon of gasoline produces nineteen pounds of carbon dioxide
Throughout the years, vehicles have been an important part of human lives. From steam-powered, diesel-powered and now, electric-powered vehicles. With today’s ever advancing technology, the type of technology used for vehicles are slowly evolving into something that adapts the change that is also happening in our word. This includes climate change, population increase and many more.
