Preventing Firearms

There should be guidelines set to insure the safety of our society before the gun is purchased. There should be a safety test given before the gun could be purchased. A test to show that the owners know how to properly use the gun. It is a requirement to take a test to show your ability before you get your drivers license, why not a before you buy a gun? There should also be a class taught teaching the proper storage of a gun. Teaching to keep the gun in a locked cabinet with the key in separate area. And the three to five day waiting period should remain.

The rise in cases of gun violence and related incidences of assault has drawn the public to the issue of guns and gun control. Such has been evident within the spheres of politics especially with the last election period seeing the incumbent president Donald Trump suggesting on stringent gun control laws. However, despite the acknowledgment of the need to have better gun laws, much ground and consensus has never reached. This paper discusses and is centered around the on-going debate over gun control, I directly address how each major political party views this subject and what I believe the United States Government should do to be able to best combat this tremendous issue. There have been many instances where firearms have not been locked up correctly and a small child has gotten a hold of it and a loss of life has occured. Accidents are another reason some people use to argue for the necessity of gun control. However, more accidental shootings are from guns which are unsafely stored in the home, than from intentional shooting of another person. According to the article, “Home is Where the Gun is” in the magazine New Scientist, “The level of gun crime in the US has been falling…but firearms injuries involving children are not necessarily the result of criminal activity…37 per cent of the children recorded…were hurt unintentionally. ‘These injuries likely could have been prevented with more careful firearm storage within the home…’” (1). The number of accidental shootings could be reduced by careful firearm storage within a home. People who own guns would benefit from knowing good ways to protect their family members from accessing guns. They would then be able to protect themselves and their children from any potential dangers before officers of the law would need to intervene.
