Private Schools vs. Public Schools Essay

Many parents find that public schools simply do not fit their students’ needs. In such cases, parents have to research schools that will fulfill not only their students’ needs, but also their own. Some families find that Charter schools, and Private schools are the two best choices. While some students find that main stream schooling is the right option for themselves, some students find that they are not reaching their full potential at public schools. Depending on the student at hand, and the families financial situation, private or charter schools could be the right choice. After all, each student is different in what they need as a learner.

Are charter schools the right choice to the educational needs of our children? Charter schools are tuition free public schools created and operated by parents, organizations, and community groups to fill student’s educational needs. Charter schools consider educating their students as the priority, and identify how children’s learning needs are different from each other, so they came up with different ways on educating their students such as learning in small groups, or by participating in hands on learning. Currently, there is a way to avoid a the encompassment of public education; and that is private education. Yet, everything comes at a price and as stated by Amy Witherbee; “... if given the option, and money was no object (tuition, transportation costs, etc.), more than half of the parents questioned would take their children from public schools to the private sector.” Which may seem obvious as most parents would expect the best for their children in education. As it is understood, private schools entail costs not present in public education, as shared these costs would cover the tuition fee for attending, and materials, as well as any fees acquired with putting someone in private education. If half of the parents who were asked if they would enlist their child in private schooling, then there obviously some questions that arise about both of the halves. For example, for the parents/guardians, who answered that they would not move their child from public school, already have their children enlisted in a more advantaged public school in a good community. According to Albert Shanker (1993), it is not possible to compare student achievements in public and private schools. However, it is popular belief that students who attend private schools are more equipped for college or the workforce. Also, there is some debate that public schools should rise up to the standards of private schools. In my opinion, the only difference between public and private schools is prestige. Not all public schools are the same, but the Americans need to start challenging the public education system. Therefore, the concept of my show is very relevant to the issues in our society.

By comparing and contrasting the different choices of schools, parents can see what works best for them. Charter and public schools do have some similarities, but they also differ in some areas.
