A considerable amount of academic writing has been undertaken on the definition of ‘Leadership’ and ‘Management’ over the last couple of centuries. Numerous theories, models and philosophies have been developed to explain each and the different nature of the role of the leader versus the manager. To attempt to summarise all of these would be nigh on impossible but over the recent decades a few theories have resonated and become popular due to the simplicity with which they clarify the thinking.

The Public Health field is constantly changing and adapting to a new environment and changes that are occurring worldwide. Many of the Leadership and Management Skill trends that are affecting Public Health are the demographic shifts that are occurring in the US population. Accountability in relation to public responsiveness, assessing emerging health risks, and changes in health services delivery and financing, as well as leadership geared towards being collective and with less stress being place on the individual, are various trends that are affecting different forms of management. Healthcare is constantly changing and advancing, which requires nurses to possess complex leadership skills that can be utilized to accomplish the most successful outcome possible for each individual patient (Titzer, Phillips, Tooley, Hall, & Shirey, 2013). Managing these fundamental challenges necessitates the ability to acquire knowledgeable research and implement it into a strategic plan of care for individuals and/or communities (Titzer et al., 2013). In this paper I will explain why I chose the leader and manager role, and I will examine the challenges and opportunities faced with this role. I will also discuss the theories related to this role, and I will review the competences and experience that must be achieved for this role.

This system is comprised of primary care institutions, nursing homes, hospitals, and intensive care units. Within the primary healthcare system, different professionals use their managerial competencies and skills in order to ensure quality services are available to the targeted patients. A wide range of policies in healthcare have emerged in order to ensure more people receive quality medical support (Ratnapalan & Uleryk, 2014). In order to ensure this goal is realized, management has become a powerful policy agenda in the primary healthcare setting. The term “health system” refers to the organization of institutions, resources, and professionals that offer sustainable services to support the medical needs of the target population. This definition explains why there are numerous types of health systems. For instance, the nature of laws and care delivery models in a given nation define its healthcare system. This discussion focuses on the issue of leadership within the realm of management and its role in the changing healthcare environment.

Within many companies and businesses there are often huge dilemmas with the leadership aspect of the organization. This skill of leadership should be found among managers who have to rely messages and to lead individuals in the right direction. Communication problems, organizational management concerns, and motivational issues are among the few that arise due to the lack of professionalism. Along with completing tasks and being an overall successful company, there were also a lot of components that caused issues and problems within the workplace. Most healthcare employees are trained professionals who are capable of managing a healthcare organization, providing proper patient care and even maintaining professionalism when no one is looking. (Elevate Admins, 2016) In order for a healthcare business to be successful, all healthcare employees need to acquire and need to apply proper communication skills, necessary organizational management skills, and must be able to motivate their employees and each other at all times in order to be an exceptional leader.

Managers in healthcare are important leaders. All employees underneath the managers look to them for guidance. Managers lead very busy careers full of responsibility. There are also many benefits to working as a manager, however; it is important to have specific qualities to be successful.

TIn the healthcare industry we have three main forms of leadership traits. These leadership traits really seem to map out the organization policies, culture and overall structure. It is very important to have effective leaders on top that can relate and enforce structure and culture. The healthcare system is an ever expanding, dynamic and complex industry that requires strong leadership to steer and direct employees’ performances by utilizing flexible, strong and transformational planning system and management of staff strengths, core values and talents (Reeves et al, 2013).
