Sigmund Freud is highly renowned psychologists known for his most controversial theories in the history of psychology. He is also believed to be the father of modern psychiatry and psychology. His works are read widely and are criticized as well. He has left behind numerous theories regarding human mind and behavior out of which some are commonly accepted and some are widely debated. The question after that arises now is “Why did Freud’s theories get many criticisms?”

To help us understand the human mind, behaviourist and psychodynamic approaches have helped us understand the alternative outlooks in the science of mind and behaviour. Both approaches can be examined by the means of theoretical assumptions and methodology.

Psychology is made up of many perspectives, such as, behavioural, biological, cognitive, social, humanistic and finally, psychodynamic. This essay will focus on the behavioural perspective and the biological perspective. According to J Walker (2012) the behavioural perspective is based on behaviourism and is the study of observing behaviour when in certain contexts and events. The biological perspective however, explains behaviour by focusing on the function of the nervous system, genes and the brain.

Attending the psychology lecture has been an interesting experience for me, which I learn about different psychological theories explaining how our behaviors and thoughts are changing by the surrounding stimuli and factors. While I attain the theoretical knowledge, I also understand the important to convert this knowledge into daily applications. Among the theories I have learnt in the lesson, I found the psychoanalytic framework of Sigmund Freud is more appealing to me as I can somehow relate it to myself and the psychological development of my little brother. Moreover, it seems a more controversial theory when compare to other psychology perspective.
