Recent scientific studies have allowed us to understand more than ever before how literacy develops, why some children have difficulty, and what constitutes best instructional practice. Scientists now estimate that fully 95 percent of all children can be taught to read. Yet, in spite of all our knowledge, statistics reveal an alarming prevalence of struggling and poor readers that is not limited to any one segment of society:

It has been shown that if students start at an early age to learn to read and write their learning in all content areas will improve. It is for this reason it is important for secondary teachers to understand early reading acquisition as to incorporate those reading skills in lesson to accommodate students with reading deficiencies. Educators can understand the building blocks of how a student learns and develops into a successful reader in order to help them develop their reading skills. If teachers understand reading acquisition they can better assess their students’ reading level. As such, the role of professional judgement in understanding the selection of reading or writing material is to know their students reading needs and select materials

As time goes on the familiarity with reading and writing is essential for an individual to better themselves in life, for the world we live in is a place for competition between every human to succeed. The value of literacy is not only for high-end people but anybody that want to gain knowledge. As one gains knowledge through literacy, it can extend toward one achieving their goals or achievements in life. The strategies when going over a reading assignment is a significant part of what one is trying to comprehend the text.

Teaching literacy is certainly not an easy task; hence, educators must have significant background knowledge and experience in the literacy area in order to provide the best learning experience to students. Educators must constantly promote literacy in their classrooms, especially when the students are young readers. For that reason, it is extremely important that educators make a great effort to get to know their students’ and their reading abilities, their strengths and weakness in the reading area and most importantly, to have an extended knowledge of how to teach literacy. Reading is the foundation of learning; every concept and subject taught requires some form of reading, therefore, building a strong reading foundation will enable individuals to become successful not only academically, but also socially.

Reading is an important part of today’s society. Being able to read and write defines populaces as educated, successful and intelligent, since the world revolves around written language. Being literate is a vital tool of survival in today’s civilization. Reading is not only important for basic day-to-day functions, but also helps to form a stronger self-disciple, longer attention span and better memory retention. From the moment a child is born, caregivers begin reading to their child.

One of the most important foundational skills in the primary grades is learning how to read proficiently. This skill is a key indicator for student’s success for the rest of their educational careers (Wigfield, Guthrie, Perencevich, Taboada, Klauda, Mcrae, & Barbosa, 2008). The teacher researcher believes that the students in her class are not motivated to read paper bound books, and that by implementing an online reading program it will increase her students motivation to complete their nightly reading homework. She also believes that when students complete their nightly reading homework on a regular basis this will help improve the students reading comprehension and fluency scores. Many of us go through our everyday lives not realizing the many things that have built us to become who we are today. We were blessed enough to grow up in a well-educated society, where we are constantly growing and bettering ourselves. We have taken this education or more so our “foundation” and utilized it to help build ourselves. Reading is one of the most substantial learning blocks, it’s something that we use in our everyday lives that help us reach our maximum potential in life.

In today's society a plethora of information is immediately available at the touch of a button, and long gone are the days of careful hours spent scouring through a library for information. In "How to Read a Book" author Mortimer Adler points out that this ease of access to information has turned the masses into inattentive readers. In the first chapter, "The Activity and Art of Reading" Adler distinguishes between different types of reading such as active vs. inactive reading and goals that should be associated with reading such as reading for information and reading for understanding. In the latter chapter he goes on to point out how to be a successful and demanding reader through critical reading and asking oneself questions about the text.

As a student, I remember when I was really little and how much I loved to read. I’d have either myself or my mother read me a book every night before bed. I loved picturing the story within my head, but now as a freshman college student I do not enjoy reading. I only decide to read when its assigned, and even then it's still hard for me to focus, especially if the books not interesting. After reading this article called “How Teachers Make Children Hate Reading”, these are the three major points I related to; having children read out loud, making them stop reading to look up a word they don't know, and quizzing them on things they read. I realized that I related to all of them and remember going through that in school.

Learning to read is a complex task which involves more than just decoding the print on the page. The goal of reading is to construct meaning from the text (Winch, 2014). While the teaching of decoding skills is an extremely important step in the reading process, simply having the skills of decoding is not enough to become a successful reader. For this reason, the key elements of the reading process will be discussed in an order which allows children to develop the building blocks necessary to become a successful reader. Systematic and explicit reading instruction is vital for reading development as it allows children to build on the previously acquired skills and strategies required to become a successful reader. Have you ever wondered how many students are truly reading to learn or just reading to get it done? It has become evident that in today’s society reading is less important to students than it really should be. Not only is reading diminishing in the lives of students, faculty are even paying more attention to the writing process and less on the student’s reading strategies. It is assumed that at the college level students should have the capability to read adequately and properly, meaning students should be able to synthesize, analyze and comprehend what they are reading.
