The topic I chose to research and discuss is the topic of recruiting and retaining the best employees. I chose this subject because I felt it was important for an employer trying to compete in this very competitive business environment, no matter what the business is, to be able not only hire the best and most qualified employees but retain them and keep them motivated. The ability to distinguish the difference between high performing employees and lower performing employees can be detrimental to a company’s success or failure. In retrospect, this goes back to recruiting and retaining the best employees while avoiding and being able to let go of those of a weaker caliber. Jackson, Schuler, & Werner explain, “Retention includes all of an employer’s activities to encourage qualified and productive employees to continue working for the organization” (Jackson et al., p.188). This comes down to that particular organization’s willingness to motivate and make those employees who are high performing and productive satisfied enough to continue to work there at that same level if not higher level. Improvements in productivity, reduction in labor costs, and a competitive edge are all the things that can be attributed with a successful recruiting and retention program. This in turn makes your organization more alluring to those on the outside looking in.
Now that the definition of recruitment is clear it time to explore the different strategies that are used in the recruitment process. Kevin Ryan, successful CEO of Guilt Goupe, states, “Recruiting is so important that we intentionally overinvest in it” (Ryan, 2012, p.45). This statement shows how important recruitment is. The method of recruiting has significantly changed over time. Today, there is less reading through stacks of resumes and more interacting with potential employees on a casual and formal basis. The method of job recruiting can include many different channels and practices. These methods can consist of practices such as attending job fairs, promoting from within, online and college recruiting, and referrals. Most recruiting methods are face-to-face interactions between the employer and potential employee. This gives the employers a chance to see the candidate in person, how they present themselves, and what they can bring to their company.
Developing a recruitment and selection process with high standards is what will result in attaining personnel capable of amplifying excellence, which is the first step of the second principle, known as raising the bar. “Regardless of whether the company is large or small, hiring the best and brightest employees lays a strong foundation for excellence”

Retaining employees is one way the turnover rate can decrease, Branham (2000), focuses on retaining valuable employees by incorporating four key elements. The first key elements is, “be a company that people want to work for”. There are many companies that have been labeled as, “employers of choice”. These employers all have something in common, which is how they value their employers (Branham, 2000). They treat their employees with respect and like family. With being an “employer of choice,” people are the most valuable asset; not just customers but employees too. Many companies go above and beyond for their customers, but not for their employees, yet they wonder why they are losing valuable talent.

The retention of employees basically refers to different procedures and practices that help retain employee for a much longer period of time. The following issues should be taken under consideration if they want their employees retained for a longer time period: management, communication, salaries, decision making, perks, career development, recruitment, understanding and appreciation (Belanger and Caron, 2005).
