Leadership is summarized as ‘the process in which an individual impacts a variety of individuals to attain a common goal’. The goal is attained by mutual collaboration and cohesive behavior. A leader infuses a sense of positivity and manages others to reach a specified goal. Leadership has had a very profound influence throughout my life by affecting my family, friends, teammates, and the overall decisions that I have made. By using my personal experiences with leadership, I have learned how to use these skills not only on the field, but throughout my everyday actions.

As part of my Business Innovation Development Project Unit, I had the opportunity to put myself into group with my friends or people I believed I could work well with. In the first stages of our group we all tried to get to know each other more through analysing personality and learning types’ test that we previously undertook. I realise we were going through the normal stages of the team formation in particular forming and norming (Tuckman, 1965). In this reflection, I choose to write about the assignments surrounding my object, the Albina mural project documentary film. The research part of the assignment for the annotated bibliography required working in teams. For the most part, I really enjoyed this experience since it forced me into a situation where I had to find a way of incorporating everyone's thoughts and ideas in a manner that complemented and respected each of our individual leadership styles. At first, it was difficult to find a way of holding everyone accountable so that there would not be shifting blames at the end of the project. However, as a group, we decided to go with a divide and conquer approach. This was effective and efficient, however, I realize in the real world this only works when every team member does their part in a timely fashion. For example, when I have to, I am willing to be the person that steps up to the plate and takes charge. Leadership entails guiding others to realize particular goals using a variety of skills (Sullivan & Garland, 2011); Weihrich & Koontz, 2008). Likewise, Spector (2006) defined leadership as the art of influencing others to readily and actively endeavour towards achieving goals set by the team. Additionally, Spector (2006) emphasized that there is a shared theme that leadership comprises influencing individual belief systems, behaviours and feelings. As such, the smooth running of an organization requires effective leadership.

Now that our group has come to a decision, I think this assignment is great way to look back and reflect on our group journey. As the oldest member of the group, I knew that I might change the dynamics of the group. I have had many group activities were the other members give me more credit than I deserved because of my age and experience. In other moments, I tend to have too much initiative or assertiveness were I take control of the group. When I was in the Marines, I would quickly accept the leadership responsibilities and show the initiative to separate myself from the rest. After leaving the Marines and starting school, it has been a little different. Even though I want to go to my defaults, I get self-conscious about giving the younger students the opportunity to take the lead. I get this uneasy feeling that I am being too assertive or taking their opportunity to grow. So, to prevent that default or awkwardness, I did what I usually do in this kind of setting; I try not to take the leadership position and let others take that opportunity. I intentionally stepped back and watched things play out and helped if needed. Since I am a very vocal person, I found it hard taking this position. What really surprised me during the group assignments where the initiative each group member showed throughout our PSP journey. This experience reaffirmed my belief that with a group of motivated individuals and the right dynamics, pretty much anything can get done.
