As part of my Business Innovation Development Project Unit, I had the opportunity to put myself into group with my friends or people I believed I could work well with. In the first stages of our group we all tried to get to know each other more through analysing personality and learning types’ test that we previously undertook. I realise we were going through the normal stages of the team formation in particular forming and norming (Tuckman, 1965). In my assignment group we had all Belbin team roles which helped us perform well throughout our project and also helped us to identify other team members’ behavioural strengths and weaknesses. In this reflection, I choose to write about the assignments surrounding my object, the Albina mural project documentary film. The research part of the assignment for the annotated bibliography required working in teams. For the most part, I really enjoyed this experience since it forced me into a situation where I had to find a way of incorporating everyone's thoughts and ideas in a manner that complemented and respected each of our individual leadership styles. At first, it was difficult to find a way of holding everyone accountable so that there would not be shifting blames at the end of the project. However, as a group, we decided to go with a divide and conquer approach. This was effective and efficient, however, I realize in the real world this only works when every team member does their part in a timely fashion. During the research phase, I learned quite a bit about myself that I didn't know in high school. For example, when I have to, I am willing to be the person that steps up to the plate and takes charge. Taking on more of a driver’s role is something I would like to continue expanding moving forward. As such, the smooth running of an organization requires effective leadership.
Now that our group has come to a decision, I think this assignment is great way to look back and reflect on our group journey. As the oldest member of the group, I knew that I might change the dynamics of the group. I have had many group activities were the other members give me more credit than I deserved because of my age and experience. In other moments, I tend to have too much initiative or assertiveness were I take control of the group. When I was in the Marines, I would quickly accept the leadership responsibilities and show the initiative to separate myself from the rest. After leaving the Marines and starting school, it has been a little different. Even though I want to go to my defaults, I get self-conscious about giving the younger students the opportunity to take the lead. I get this uneasy feeling that I am being too assertive or taking their opportunity to grow. So, to prevent that default or awkwardness, I did what I usually do in this kind of setting; I try not to take the leadership position and let others take that opportunity. I intentionally stepped back and watched things play out and helped if needed. Since I am a very vocal person, I found it hard taking this position. What really surprised me during the group assignments where the initiative each group member showed throughout our PSP journey. This experience reaffirmed my belief that with a group of motivated individuals and the right dynamics, pretty much anything can get done.

I frowned, and internally berated myself for allowing myself to be put in such a position. I sighed, realizing that I did, after all, have no one to blame but myself. As I took my place at the table, the frostiness from one side was almost palpable.
