Charlie Chaplin film City Lights can be categorized as a comedy. A comedy is defined as a professional entertainment consisting of jokes and satirical sketches, intended to make an audience laugh. In the film he uses jokes and sound effects to add more to the comedy and make it more entertaining for the audience. Chaplin uses comedy to start the film. In the first scene the tramp is shown sleeping on a monument that is being presenting to the city. One example of comedy is when Chaplin uses the kazoo as a sound effect when the mayor is speaking. This pokes fun at the politics at that time and shows that the mayors words are unimportant. In addition, when the city began the pledge he starts to mock them. This is also an example of comedy because he is trying to make the audience laugh. Furthermore, as he tries to get off the monument he rips his pants on the statue, and sits on the statues face. This shows comedy is being used in this scene because the Tramp is acting inappropriate to get a reaction from the viewers. For example, the millionaire pushes the tramp in the water by accident and when he's trying to get out the millionaire falls in. They keep repeating their actions and by doing that it adds humor to entertain the audience. Also, Chaplin uses mickey-mousing to make it more amusing. For example, sounds are used when the rock hits the tramps foot, and when the tramp and the billionaire both fall into the water. To end this scene the tramp convinces the millionaire to not commit suicide and they head back the the millionaires house to celebrate. In conclusion, this film exemplifies
