Charlie Chaplin film City Lights can be categorized as a comedy. A comedy is defined as a professional entertainment consisting of jokes and satirical sketches, intended to make an audience laugh. In the film he uses jokes and sound effects to add more to the comedy and make it more entertaining for the audience. Chaplin uses comedy to start the film. In the first scene the tramp is shown sleeping on a monument that is being presenting to the city. One example of comedy is when Chaplin uses the kazoo as a sound effect when the mayor is speaking. This pokes fun at the politics at that time and shows that the mayors words are unimportant. In addition, when the city began the pledge he starts to mock them. This is also an example of comedy because he is trying to make the audience laugh. Furthermore, as he tries to get off the monument he rips his pants on the statue, and sits on the statues face. This shows comedy is being used in this scene because the Tramp is acting inappropriate to get a reaction from the viewers. In conclusion, in the first scene comedy is already being used to grab whoever is watching the films attention. …show more content…
For example, the millionaire pushes the tramp in the water by accident and when he's trying to get out the millionaire falls in. They keep repeating their actions and by doing that it adds humor to entertain the audience. Also, Chaplin uses mickey-mousing to make it more amusing. For example, sounds are used when the rock hits the tramps foot, and when the tramp and the billionaire both fall into the water. To end this scene the tramp convinces the millionaire to not commit suicide and they head back the the millionaires house to celebrate. In conclusion, this film exemplifies
Comedy is a type of entertainment that uses jokes and skits that are intended to make the audience laugh. In the short story, “Priscilla and the Wimps,” Monk Clutter had the school under control with his gang, the Klutters Kobras. Before Priscilla came, the gang would go around the school stealing kids lunch money from students. When Priscilla came, Monk had finally met his match. Richard Peck’s short comedy, “Priscilla and the Wimps” is a high level of comedy that uses comic characters, comic situations, and comic language to convey the importance of treating others the way you want to be treated.
In the 1931 film “City Lights”, Charlie Chaplin “opens our eyes”, so to speak, about how society values trivial elements of people over the deeper person by using blindness. In this film, Chaplin brilliantly mixes lighthearted comedy with deep and complex ideas about problems with society. Chaplin uses music, gags, and a genuine love connection to portray this point in multiple ways throughout the movie. Chaplin also took the bold step of not making a talking movie, even though they were available at the time, making the details in the pictures and sounds he was creating that much more important. What makes “City Lights” so special, and different from other comedies, is Chaplin’s natural blend of comedic scenes with tense and serious scenes. Chaplin weaved together a masterpiece that culminates in the end with the lady seeing who she fell in love with, which is also the moment Chaplin slaps the viewer in the face with the realization that the priorities in society are misguided and that the important things cannot be seen with the eye.
Comedy is the most significant form of humorous expression. It is a type of communication used to talk about the social and cultural problems in society. They talk about subjects that would make society defensive but do it in a way that lightens a serious subject. Many people see comedy as humorous but there’s more to it then just laughs in America it talks about a lot of problems in society such as politics and racial profiling. Although comedians try to make jokes and entertain the audience, they make you notice the reality of today’s society and problems. Comedy is offensive and known for talking about stereotypes but put into funny stories therefore making the audience laugh and feeling comfortable. Comedy also has a way of discussing
Charlie Chaplin’s (1931) City Lights, is one of the last silent films to be released in America, that was successful, as the age of the ‘talkie’ was beginning. He was one of the few great silent film stars to successfully continue his career. Chaplin uses a lot of symbolism of life in this film, using flowers, blindness, money and of course the Tramp.
In the movie Charlie Chaplin plays a tramp who finds a baby that has been abandoned by an unfit mother. At first Chaplin tries to get rid of the baby, but when that fails he decides to take him in as his own. The movie then skips ahead to when the boy is about five years old and shows Chaplin and the kid scamming their neighbors by breaking their windows and then making them pay for Chaplin to fix them. One day the kid gets sick so Chaplin calls a doctor who, after seeing the kid’s living conditions’ calls the police to have the child taken away. The rest of the movie is about Chaplin’s journey to rescue the kid and ends with a dramatic reuniting scene.
Through the use of adynatons and juxtapositions Daniel O’Brien and M.S. Mason were able to portray the true meaning of the comedian community by explaining the use of political satire and the importance that serves. When comparing the work of the two authors, one notices how the use of the word comedian or comic is prevalent and prevails through the texts in order to talk to one another. They both define this word as someone who is able to poke fun at a given situation no matter where they are located, weather this was school for Bart Sampson or in a holding cell being interrogated by government agents for O’Brien. By poking fun they don’t just mean nice jabs at an opportune moment but they go as far as to mean parodying the whole political
The Great Dictator is a satirical comedy about the dictator of Tomainia, Adenoid Hynkel, and what happens when he attempts to expand his empire, and ultimately conquer the world. Hynkel’s story parallels the story of a poor Jewish barber as he tries to avoid persecution from Hynkel's regime. The plot of this movie was meant to satirically mirror the events that were happening in the real world after WWI. When Charlie Chaplin began production on The Great Dictator, the war had yet to begin. In fact, he had already finished the bulk of the filming before Hitler had begun his blitzkrieg of Europe. Charlie has stated that if he knew of Hitler’s appalling actions, he would have never produced the film in the first place.
Thus, this satirical statement allows the audience to think critically about the triviality of common theatre conventions without becoming overly confused or disinterested. Ultimately, by combining accessible satire with well-executed parody, Urinetown’s script offers a genuinely hilarious and surprisingly profound theatrical spectacle.
Some people are extremely sensitive and defensive when it comes to humor, which makes them unsecure and uncomfortable. Many comedians have tried to push comedy to its limits, making it very crude. John Cleese, is one of the few comedians that expresses, and persuades his strong opinions on this topic. Cleese’s article, “I’m Offended Every Day,” shares his thoughts on criticism on comedy, and why he thinks there is a need speak about it. He explains his understanding on how he confronts criticism even though others won’t, and that comedy is limited since it offends people, leading to why political correctness doesn’t interact with comedy.
one example of humor in the poem is when the author said "the latter was a cake" by saying that the author was using a metaphor to compare a latter to a cake even through a cake can't be a latter. Another way that the author uses humor is when he said that "Cooney died on first" again the author can be seen using metaphor to compare getting someone out at first base to someone dying on first base. The author also uses humor to hype up Casey just to let him get strike out.
Well when I went into this particular performance, I didn’t think of a comedy sketch to be a part of the definition. It allowed me to continue to broaden my idea of performance. He used lots of melodies, like certain song choices meshed with the sketches but also got a response from the audience by their singing and laughter. For example, the sketch about the shark being oppressed but at least he wasn’t black. Also the space, he didn’t have many props, all we saw was an open stage, so he wasn’t limited to things he had to use. In my opinion he had a whole realm of imaginative ideas that he could use with the very space he had.
There are several aspects of a film that will make a good comedy. A good comedy needs well-rounded characters, adventure, and a love story. If a film has well-rounded characters the viewer can relate to them in some way. If a film has adventure there is never a dull moment that will lull the viewer to sleep, and it’s packed full of crazy obstacles the characters have to pull through. If there is a love story of some kind, serious or funny, it will keep the viewer interested throughout the entire film, and keep the viewer wondering what is going to happen in the end. When a comedy has these things it will surely be a good comedic film.
Comedy, it makes us laugh and make our stomach hurt as we cringe to the most vulgar skits. It brings us together with friends, families, and strangers in a night filled with laughter. In the comedy field, it takes a lot of skill and delivery in their skits. The nature in comedy requires so many things such as stage presence, delivery, and reliability. Wanda Sykes, a Primetime Emmy Award winner, known most for her big and small shows to be the most relatable to people.
Being one of the last silent films, Charlie Chaplin starred in, directed, produced, wrote, and edited a comedic and entertaining film serving as a great farewell to the Silent Era. Being reliant on audio, the idea of a film with no dialogue seemed unappealing, however, Charlie Chaplin’s City Lights offers a new sense of humor although it is considered antiquated.
Charlie Chaplin did not use sound to communicate to the audience in his movies. Despite the fact that there was no spoken language, his movies were sensational and the audiences loved them. Chaplin was thought of as cinema’s first genius and has been called the single most-influential artist in the history of motion pictures. I am researching Charlie Chaplin to learn how he became a sensational comedian and one of the best actors of all time.
