Media Reaction on Immigration
Immigration issues are not issues only encountered here in the United States, but are also issues faced throughout the world. There have been numerous of debates on the issues of immigration in the United States. The most controversial was the passing of a new bill in Arizona. Governor Jan Brewer passed into Arizona legislature the SB1070, which became very controversial because of the demands that this law was enforcing. This controversial bill gives any Arizona law enforcement personnel full authority to stop any people who they think have reasonable suspicion of living in the United States illegally. It also gives

This law was sending a very strong message to all of the illegal aliens living in Arizona. The SB-1070 was written deliberately with aggressive measures intended to promote to the estimated 460,000 illegal aliens to go home (About, 2011). The issue with some parts of the bill was that it was racially profiling, and it promoted discrimination against mainly immigrants. The federal judge also stopped the section of the law that made it a crime for any for any foreign resident living in the state of Arizona to carry immigration paperwork at all times. In addition, the judge also stopped the part where it would make it a crime for any illegal or foreign resident living in the state of Arizona to solicit, perform, or apply for work. This gave illegal aliens living in state of Arizona a big relief to know that those main parts of the bill were stopped, giving them the advantage to continue to move forward with their lives instead of worrying about getting deported.
Many people have their own opinions when relating in regard to illegal immigrants hurting the United States economy. There have been numerous of economist say there is no doubt the U.S. benefits from illegal immigrants. All of the undocumented people living in the United States contribute every day in our economy, they contribute as workers, taxpayers and consumers. All immigrants pay sales and property taxes and most pay federal and state income taxes as well. If there was laws like the
Back in 2007 there were several concerns over immigration as a whole and exploding proportions of illegal immigrants crossing the border in the Arizona area. Arizona attempted to resolve the influx of people across the border by imposing heavy fines on employers hiring illegal immigrants. At that time in Arizona there was a democratic governor Janet Napolitano that continually vetoed the Arizona’s legislature attempt to reduce illegal immigration. In 2009 the state replaced the Democratic governor with a Republican governor Jan Brewer who was supportive of reforms for immigration in Arizona. In 2010 the immigration problem was so sever that Arizona passed legislation allowing the state to enforce federal law for identification of legal immigration into the United States. This sparked a nation wide discussion on illegal immigration and immigration reform.
Currently, one of most debated policy issues in America is immigration. Starting with the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882, the American government created several immigration laws that sought to put an end to illegal immigration by mandating workplace regulations, employer sanctions, internal enforcement mechanisms, and border security (Nowrasteh 2). According to immigration policy analyst Alexander Nowrasteh at the Center of Global Liberty and Prosperity of the Cato Institute, by the 1990s, legal immigration was essentially impossible to the United States unless the immigrant was highly skilled, had a close American citizen or legal permanent resident relative or friend who could sponsor him or her, or was a refugee. The Arizona immigration laws should be repealed due to damage done to the state’s economy, the benefits of immigrants to the American economic structure, and the societal harm imposed upon citizens.
According to the author of this law, Mr. Russell Pearce, the state senator of Arizona’s 18th legislative district and the author of the new Arizona law SB 1070, argues that the United States Federal Government has not been doing their job correctly. The new law gives police officers the power to enforce immigration law. Pearce stated that police officers will not abuse of their powers given by the SB 1070 law because the SB 1070 clearly states the law provisions and how to enforce it. Therefore, he took the lead and implemented this law on his state to eliminate undocumented people at least in Arizona. Through this law police officers will have the power of prosecute anyone who is suspicious of being an illegal alien.
The Arizona SB 1070 is a law that requires all aliens over the age of 14 who remain in the united states for longer than 30 days to register with the US government, and to have registration documents in their possession at all times. The Arizona law also made it illegal to be in the state of Arizona without the required documents. Some people don't agree with law they say that there is too many people that can't get the legal documents they need. Then there are some people that say the Arizona law is a good law to follow. Such as the law provides more security to the surrounding environment. In my opinion the Arizona state law is a good law to live and follow by for many different reasons.
As Franklin D. Roosevelt said “Remember, remember always, that all of us, and you and I especially, are descended from immigrants and revolutionists.”As much as people try twisting the president 's words, president Roosevelt meant that this country was founded by immigrants, and therefore we should be accepting. 11.5 million can stand for many things but, in this case according to Pew Research Centers 11.5 million is the number of illegal immigrants that live in the United States as of 2013.One thing that everyone know’s is that Arizona is the number 1 state in the United States that has the most immigration problems. Arizona 's anti-immigrant law, S.B. 1070, Lets Police ask the immigration status of anyone arrested or detained if they suspect that the person is not in the U.S. legally. with this new SB 1070 law it makes it so it is a crime to be caught without papers in the state of Arizona. The state of Arizona should abolish the SB1070 law.
The Arizona SB1070 required police officers to demands the papers of any individual suspected of being illegally in the country. This law was considered unconstitutional and promoted racial profiling. Similarly, the legislation frightened illegal aliens preventing them from reporting crimes and participating in investigations, which affects the public safety instead of solving the border security issue.
The summer of 2010 was proven to be an especially historic one for immigration policy in the United States. In late spring 2010, Arizona passed Senate Bill 10701 —an extraordinary law that reflects and has provoked intense reactions by political leaders, commentators, and the public. The bill raises critical issues of race, security, sovereignty, civil rights, state power, and foreign relations. Such issues encompass larger debates about modern immigration law and policy, and are worthy of sustained public commentary and scholarly discourse. The impact of S.B. 1070 on the criminal justice system of Arizona—the duties and powers of Arizona law enforcement and prosecutorial authorities, and the relationship of the state legislation to federal
The State of Arizona is a gripping documentary that outlines the struggles that Arizona went through in dealing with illegal immigration. This saga follows the controversial SB1070 immigration law through the voices and lives of individuals who were on both sides of the coin. The flawed immigration system in the United States caused a ripple effect that hit Arizona hard and led to the tripling of the undocumented population in Arizona. This caused hatred towards the undocumented population due to fears of crime related to Mexican drug rings and competition for jobs. The federal government did not act on these immigration issues and this forced the state of Arizona to pass a series of legislatures that would restrict and control the rights
The Arizona SB 1070 is a state immigration law that has raised racial and political controversy. The law has had a negative effect on the majority of the hispanic community in the state of Arizona. The law was put in place to eliminate the amount of illegal immigrants that cause crime yet has targeted those who are neither criminals nor illegal. The SB 1070 law is the perfect example of racial profiling, is unconstitutional, and does not actually solve illegal immigration, the law has more negative effects than positive and should be repealed.
Case Summary: Many states wanted to adopt policies that would limit the lives of illegal immigrants. Arizona being the primary state vying for laws to punish unauthorized immigrants. On April 23, 2010 the governor of Arizona signed a law designed to “ ... identify, prosecute and deport illegal immigrants.” The United States seeking to stop the law before it was in effect, argued that the law was in conflict with the federal laws on illegal immigration. In the law signed by Arizona, given was four provisions, a condition in an agreement or law. The four provisions were (1) that being in Arizona without the proper legal documentation
Undocumented immigrants benefit our economy by the six million workers. At height of recent economic boom, the number of hours worked by the typical low skilled immigrant was 56 percent greater than for the typical low skilled native. “Immigrants in the low wage labor market has grown drastically(The New York Times)”. Immigrants will work for anything just to succeed in life so if they got to work for low-wage they will. The six million workers are helping us by either having there own business or working for someone else. However every American doesn’t feel the
SB 1070 Anti-Immigration Law was passed by Arizona legislators and signed by former Arizona Governor Jan Brewer in early 2009 when another former Arizona Governor Janet Napolitano became Secretary of Homeland Security under President Barack Obama’s administration (Morse, 2011). After Jan Brewer took office, she was looking for ways to strengthen the anti-immigration laws. Former Arizona State Senator Russell Pearce was attempting to find ways to pass an anti-immigration bill through the Arizona legislature called SB1070 (Morse, 2011). The new law required people to provide identification at traffic stops and crime scenes, but targeted illegal immigrants or those suspected to be illegal immigrants (Pavlich, 2012). This law is already passed and has received backlash from the Hispanic community.
Immigration has been an issue within the U.S. from the colonial days. Immigration is a hot topic in the U.S., which is gaining more focused attention due to the upcoming 2016 Presidential election. There are always two sides to an issue and immigration is no different. The Democrats and Republicans have different views on how to reform the immigration policies.
Illegal immigrants have always been a problem for the United States. Entering the country illegally can result in deportation back to their native country. The majority of those that enter the country illegally are here to find a better future. As more and more undocumented immigrants pour into this country, stricter laws are being passed which in terms becomes a controversial issue.
An economic boost is something the government longs for and shockingly many illegal immigrants have provided just that. According to an article written by The Nation, “undocumented immigrants contribute about $11.6 billion to the economy annually, including nearly $7 billion in sales and excise taxes and $3.6 billion in property taxes. They are, in economic terms, productive citizens, and pay a higher effective tax rate than the top 1 percent income bracket.” (Chen). This information helps put into perspective how much the undocumented immigrants contribute to america's economy. The thought that illegal immigrants have helped boost our economy is something that does not settle well with many americans. Americans do not like the fact that people who are not even truly apart of the country are the ones helping it rather than the naturally born citizens. The government has spent years trying to find ways to make the economy bigger and better. They never expected immigrants to be the solution.
