Illegal immigrants have always been a problem for the United States. Entering the country illegally can result in deportation back to their native country. The majority of those that enter the country illegally are here to find a better future. As more and more undocumented immigrants pour into this country, stricter laws are being passed which in terms becomes a controversial issue. The United States is well known as the land of opportunity. Many immigrants come here to work and live a better life. For immigrants that cannot enter the country legally, the end result is to enter the country illegally. The majority of undocumented immigrants “do often take some of the country’s least attractive job, such as agriculture” (Davidson). …show more content…
This is a “controversial immigration bill authorizing police officers to stop suspected illegal immigrants and demand proof of citizenship” (The Huffington Post). This is giving the police too much authority and can lead to many other problems such as discrimination against Hispanics.
The Arizona Immigration Law that just passed has caused many other states to question if this was unlawful because it is targeting Hispanics. Some cities in California even boycotts doing business with Arizona because of the new law. This law has brought divided attention to the American people. States that have borders with other countries are paying close attention and reacting to this law as carefully as it can because it can affect them. Other states that do not have this issue are just thinking of what is right in their terms.
I have gathered a questionnaire with eight questions either to agree or disagree and to answer yes or no in regards to immigration. One of the questions was, “The Arizona Immigration Law of authorizing police officers to stop suspected illegal immigrants and demand proof of citizenship is a good law to help deport illegal immigrants” (Appendix A). I have given this questionnaire to twenty-five random individuals. Nine individuals agree with this law and
This law was sending a very strong message to all of the illegal aliens living in Arizona. The SB-1070 was written deliberately with aggressive measures intended to promote to the estimated 460,000 illegal aliens to go home (About, 2011). The issue with some parts of the bill was that it was racially profiling, and it promoted discrimination against mainly immigrants. The federal judge also stopped the section of the law that made it a crime for any for any foreign resident living in the state of Arizona to carry immigration paperwork at all times. In addition, the judge also stopped the part where it would make it a crime for any illegal or foreign resident living in the state of Arizona to solicit, perform, or apply for work. This gave illegal aliens living in state of Arizona a big relief to know that those main parts of the bill were stopped, giving them the advantage to continue to move forward with their lives instead of worrying about getting deported.
The state of Arizona has issued a new state law which enables police officers to act as immigration officers. With this underestimated powers given to the police, it will cause a lot of problems, and sensitivities to all the legal and illegal immigrants (Cnn.com). Undocumented students residing Arizona will be in a constant fear of being deported since any minor issue such as calling the police for help in any case given can put their lives in the danger of deportation. It’s only a matter of time if the government doesn’t stop this act, Arizona will impose unfair laws for education toward undocumented students. This will only cause chaos, and taking away the validity of the American Dream.
According to the author of this law, Mr. Russell Pearce, the state senator of Arizona’s 18th legislative district and the author of the new Arizona law SB 1070, argues that the United States Federal Government has not been doing their job correctly. The new law gives police officers the power to enforce immigration law. Pearce stated that police officers will not abuse of their powers given by the SB 1070 law because the SB 1070 clearly states the law provisions and how to enforce it. Therefore, he took the lead and implemented this law on his state to eliminate undocumented people at least in Arizona. Through this law police officers will have the power of prosecute anyone who is suspicious of being an illegal alien.
It is clear that illegal immigration has gotten out of control and constringent measures need to be taken to protect the United States borders. The local Government of Arizona recently decided to take control of the situation, by passing the “Support our Law Enforcement and Safe Neighborhoods Act” {House Bill 2162}. This bill gives law enforcement officers and agencies the authority, to lawfully stop, detain and arrest anyone who appears to look like an illegal alien. The bill out-right condones racial profiling and it violates civil rights, as well!
As Franklin D. Roosevelt said “Remember, remember always, that all of us, and you and I especially, are descended from immigrants and revolutionists.”As much as people try twisting the president 's words, president Roosevelt meant that this country was founded by immigrants, and therefore we should be accepting. 11.5 million can stand for many things but, in this case according to Pew Research Centers 11.5 million is the number of illegal immigrants that live in the United States as of 2013.One thing that everyone know’s is that Arizona is the number 1 state in the United States that has the most immigration problems. Arizona 's anti-immigrant law, S.B. 1070, Lets Police ask the immigration status of anyone arrested or detained if they suspect that the person is not in the U.S. legally. with this new SB 1070 law it makes it so it is a crime to be caught without papers in the state of Arizona. The state of Arizona should abolish the SB1070 law.
Shadow immigration enforcement occurs when state or local police officers with no immigration enforcement authority exercise their regular police powers in a distorted way for the purpose of increasing federal immigration enforcement. Shadow enforcement typically involves the disproportionate targeting of vulnerable “foreign-seeming” populations for hyper-enforcement for reasons wholly independent of suspected involvement in criminal activity as defined by state or local
The Arizona SB 1070 is a state immigration law that has raised racial and political controversy. The law has had a negative effect on the majority of the hispanic community in the state of Arizona. The law was put in place to eliminate the amount of illegal immigrants that cause crime yet has targeted those who are neither criminals nor illegal. The SB 1070 law is the perfect example of racial profiling, is unconstitutional, and does not actually solve illegal immigration, the law has more negative effects than positive and should be repealed.
In the South Carolina legislature, that has been a main topic as well. The South Carolina legislators have been in a tough debate over whether to “establish an illegal immigration enforcement unit within the state law enforcement division.” (scstatehouse.gov) If this bill did not pass then that would give less supervision over the issue of undocumented aliens in South Carolina. It is estimated that there are over 70,000 undocumented immigrants living in South Carolina alone. This ultimately costs the South Carolina taxpayer over $390,000,000.00 (newsmax.com). The burden put on the tax payer is ultimately too much to leave upon the South Carolina residents as South Carolina is one of the poorer states in the nation. The illegal immigration problem that is ruining the state leaves less jobs in the market available for South Carolinians. Ultimately, when the South Carolina legislators voted on the bill it passed with a vote of 89-5 (scstatehouse.gov). With this bill passing that makes South Carolina more conscientious about the illegal immigration problem. The immigration unit established in the state enforcement unit will draw closer ties to the citizens of South Carolina. The people will not have to rely on the government for involvement, rather it will draw closer ties to the people allowing more citizen involvement. Through this bill, Derham has fulfilled his promise of listening to the people of South Carolina and dealing with the illegal immigration
Illegal immigration has been an issue in the United States for a long time so the issues that come with it should not be a surprise. America was established on the basis of newcomers settling here from abroad. Recently though, thousands of illegal immigrants have come into the U.S. through either the Mexico border, the Pacific Ocean, or the Gulf of Mexico which has created a new an unanticipated issue for the U.S., in the past immigrants came from Europe and passed through the Ellis Island station in New York. Some people can enter the country legally through a visit visa, but then have continued to stay here illegally working the U.S., usually for the better benefits and higher pay. These cases are usually not the cause of the issues.
Illegal immigration in the U.S is a problem we as Americans have to deal with. The United States is one of the most diverse countries in the world and immigration is just making that better. As Americans we are looked upon and have a heavy influence on the world. Before we as a country decide how to punish illegals we must first access why they came in illegally. These immigrants are not coming over here and sitting on welfare, but whatever little money they make they’re sending it back home to their loved ones and family. They are trying to come into a country where even the lowest paid worker can become the most powerful person. We should not deport the illegals but allow them to stay since they are beneficiary to our American society.
“We become not a melting pot, but a beautiful mosaic: Different people, different beliefs, different yearnings, different hopes, and different dreams (Carter, Jimmy). The United States of America has been given the name of the melting pot due to different cultures influencing ours and all melting together. We are considered the melting pot of the world due to citizens of other countries migrating to our country to make it their permanent residence. Immigration has been a part of the United States since its beginning (Florida, Richard). In the colonial era after settlements had already been made here on this land, a group of pilgrims came over to Plymouth and established a colony in 1620 due to religious persecution in Europe. In the 19th
Illegal Immigration has been a problem for a very long time now in the United States. It has also been a very controversial subject for as long as I can remember. Illegal immigration goes back hundreds and thousands of years. Living in such an anti-illegal immigration state has been tough, there is always something about illegal immigration laws going on, and politics talking about it and the saddest part families being separated, daily.
Illegal immigration has always been a grave issue that affects everyone in the world. Immigration is people from other countries that enter another country without any papers or visa, illegal citizens. Immigration has always been a huge debate between government and society, they are not welcomed properly and threaten in a good way, in fact they are the ones that have to face real danger and discrimination. They have neither rights nor any chance to oppose to anything submitted by their superiors.
“You knew what you signed up for” is the thing that comes to mind. The government repeatedly tries to find ways to stop immigrants migrating from places such as Eastern Europe to Britain in search of work. Britain knew exactly why the EU was set up. They knew it was designed to allow the free movement of goods and labour throughout Europe. They knew this and it's the reason why they pushed for the Eastern European countries to be granted entry to the EU. This is why Britain should not close its doors to immigration.
However, more recently illegal immigration has finally met with some opposition in some states such as Arizona, and Georgia with the passing of new legislation to crack down on illegal immigrants’ in these states. Until recently the illegal immigrants’ population in Georgia had increased every spring due to the fact that illegal workers move north from Florida after agricultural labor jobs run out at the end of harvesting season. But with the new immigration laws that have taken place in some states such as Georgia and Arizona it allows local law enforcement to see if a worker is legally able to work in the US. If the workers are illegal they are immediately deported and the employer that hired them is charged fine in excess of 270,000 dollars or more. All be it, the laws are more lax in my home state of Georgia than Arizona, I’m glad to see that the state has made some effort to battle the affliction facing the state and the country. One major difference in the Georgia version of the law is that he citizen status is on to be check if one has been in the act of breaking the law where as in Arizona there only needs to be suspicion of immigration status to constitutes a status check. Part of that law states no employer may refuse to hire a qualified person
