In a research done by Cybelle Fox and David J. Harding at Harvard University, they took a look at rampage school shootings as a form of organizational deviance. Organizational deviance is simply described as deviance by organizations or individuals within the organization. For this research it is stating that the students are the individuals that are inside the organization which would be the schools, and are creating deviant behavior which are the rampage school shootings. The reason school shootings are considered deviant behavior is because they are creating acts of violence in which do not conform or meet the expectations and goals of the school. The two researchers had drawn data from qualitative case studies from Heath High School …show more content…
They believe that teachers should notice that various students fall through the cracks. When they notice that these certain students do fall through the cracks then they can look further into the serious social or emotional problems they have. There are four reasons for the information loss that these researchers have discovered. The first one is that the schools staffs’ time and their training are not directed to being able to identify social or emotional needs. The second one is that they only worry about the students who go out of their way to break school goals. For example, the students in their study received fairly average or above average grades and their bad behaviors were fairly minor until the shooting rampage itself. So when the schools are so concerned with the very bad students with bad grades, the students that were in the studies will fall below their radar screen. The third reason is that much of the personal information on students is private and very few staff members at the school have access to that information. This leads to the fourth reason, that even with the information that teachers do have access to, it can be easily misinterpreted due to cultural differences. Even if these reasons were discovered, it doesn’t mean that every student who commits a rampage school shooting would be able to be picked out, but there could be a lot
The lack of school surveillance plays a big role for school shootings. Author of the book Rampage: the Social Roots of School Shootings, Katherine Newman states that “Failures of surveillance systems that are intended to identify troubled teens before
“Shooting massacres” in school settings, a new phenomenon within the past 50 years, are extremely rare events. Over 23 years, 1990-2012, 215 fatal school shooting incidents resulted in 363 deaths, equivalent to 0.12% of national firearm homicides during that time period …… Among these, just three shooting rampages – Columbine High School, Virginia Tech University, and Sandy Hook Elementary School – accounted for 72 (53.3%) of these 135 deaths. The frequency of random/ rampage shooting incidents in schools has remained within the narrow range of 0 to 3 episodes per year.” (Shultz, et al., 2013, p. 84)
Research in school shootings have been administered in many categories, including sociology, psychology, and etc. past studies, and direct later studies in school shootings, offers a sociology stand point for understanding the differences of school shooting incidents, including rampage shootings, mass murders shootings, and examining the mass media dynamic of school shootings; as well as presenting a combination of causes said in the research, including those on the individual, community, and social levels. Suggestions for studies in the future in school shootings are still yet to be explored.
Tragedies happen every day in small and large ways. You can live your life with the memory of one of the worst. I’m one of the unfortunate. I was a student at Columbine High School in Littleton, Colorado. I was a student there on Tuesday, April 20th of 1999: the day of the infamous Columbine School Shooting.
This tragedy at the Columbine School in Littleton, Colorado Happened on April 20, 1999. On this date two teens went on a shooting spree at the Columbine school killing a total of 13 people,on top of the 20 people wounded, before turning the guns on themselves and committing suicide.
One key factor in almost all of these school shootings are these students home and school lives. At home they normally don’t have a strong parent figure in their lives. They then go to school, and stand out as different, leading to being alone or bullied. Not having people there for you in your life is extremely hard, and sadly some people take it
The assailant’s intention is to assault as many individuals as possible with no hope of surviving. According to the New York City Police Department report on active shooters, 46% of active shooters are stopped by law enforcement officials, or other bystanders, and 40% of the active shooters either commit suicide or attempt suicide. (NYPD, 2011) Police departments nationwide are training their officers to confront the active shooters quickly and as aggressively as possible. (Cain, 2010) Police departments have begun introducing various tactics in concealment, entering doorways, and working in small groups to have a tactical advantage in eliminating the assailant. Police agencies have been working closely with their local schools to avoid future massacres. Many police agencies have implemented various approaches to ensure their response times are sharp. Daviess County, Kentucky Sherriff’s office began offering a 2-day training program that demonstrates various entry and movement techniques when confronting an active shooter (Cain, 2010) Many other agencies have introduced live-fire scenarios using artificial projectiles, and the use of ballistic shields. (Law Staff, 2008) As school shootings can never be predicted it is imperative that the education institutions and law enforcement agencies are ready and vigilant at all times to avoid other nationwide massacres.
There seems to be many controversial issues going on in the world today, particularly in the United States. Many of these issues going on right now cause division and heated debates in our country. One of the biggest and most talked about issues in America at the moment has to be whether or not if we should give teachers guns. A lot of people seem to be really divided and passionate about this topic. The fact that this issue is so relevant and talked about is what encouraged to me want to know more about it and eventually write about it. For me there is only one right answer to the topic of arming our teachers or not. We should not provide our teachers with guns as it will only increase the amount of danger in our schools, also it would be
In the wake of two recent shootings, one that left 17 dead in a Florida high school and shooting at Central Michigan that killed two,the debate over gun control is once again at the forefront of our country. When I flash back to the deadly Valentine's Day shooting, I think about my immediate reaction after watching the live coverage for an hour.
October 2006 marked the date of the tragic school shooting of ten young amish schoolgirls. However, this tragic shooting, was just the beginning. In the midst of the grieving community, forgiveness became evident. The Amish community did not show anger but rather they showed grace and compassion towards the killers family. The abundant grace that was shown was overwhelming. Through the deaths of several schoolgirls we are shown the amazing power of forgiveness and Gods grace. “The afternoon of the shooting an Amish grandfather of one of the girls who was killed expressed forgiveness toward the killer, Charles Roberts. That same day Amish neighbors visited the Roberts family to comfort them in their sorrow and pain.” (LancasterPA) And later
Do you think that the parents of the children that start school shootings be charged? Do you think that they deserve to be punished for what their kids have done? Do you think that the parents should be hurt for something that their kids have done that they may or may not have known what the kids were doing? Lack of funding and resources, many discipline problems arise when students are disengaged and do not have support services to help them persist in their educational pursuits. Lack of textbooks, inexperienced teachers, and non-existent counseling and special education services all contribute to delinquency and high dropout rates. Alternative school environments,In some public school districts, children that have been disciplined are remanded
School shootings are not very common. In fact, they are super rare. But when they happen everyone takes notice and they are heard all around the nation and if it is big enough it can be heard all around the world. There are many different traits that are linked to school shootings. “School shootings are most commonly committed by either a student who goes to the school or by an intruder from off campus who has a connection to someone within a particular school.”
School shootings are some of the scariest and most stressful situations students can be in. The intruder walks in the school while everyone is in class, unnoticed, a 9mm pistol in the waist of his pants. As he walks down the hall to the gym class that is in session, he pulls out the gun… and opens fire on the innocent students. He misses the first 4 shots but lands the 5th, poor Jimmie lays on the floor breathless. Two, three, four students lay there motionless. By the time the one resource officer takes the intruder down there are already four innocent lives taken. What would have happened if the teacher of that class was allowed and required to carry a firearm? It is more than likely no students would have been harmed that day. School shootings
There have been a number of school shootings over the past few decades. When school shootings are analyzed there is not one school shooter that is the same. There are plenty of ideas that the common person has conjured about school shooters that are wrong. This is why it is important to be critical and understand the distinct characteristics that trouble many school shooters. After looking at the research, “there are two main characteristics that are consistently found in school shooters, peer and social rejection. Not only are school shooters rejected, they lack social support and prosocial relationships” (Bartol & Bartol, 2014). Having no other way to cope they become angry and begin to seek out other forms of comfort. “A school shooter can find comfort in being cruel to animals. They can even pick up an interest in guns and other weaponry. Often times they have easy access to weapons, whether it comes from home or a peer” (Bartol & Bartol, 2014). There can be a correlation found between rejection and support and seeking out alternative ways to cope. School shooters have psychological characteristics that can be attributed to the events prior to the school shooting. Usually, there is a romantic rejection plus other psychological problems. “Some problems can include depression, lack of impulse control and antisocial behavior. A vast majority of shooters have a fascination with death, also known as macabre” (Bartol & Bartol, 2014).
School violence are very rare events, but they do happen. These events have been increasing through cities all across the nation. There have been over 15 school shootings in the year 2015. Who are the ones responsible for these horrific events? People have been blaming the society and media, the schools, and even the individuals themselves; however, the parents are the real reason for these terrifying events because they need to be involved in their children’s lives, to show love to all their children if having more than one, and to model appropriate behavior that parents help guide their children in the right direction.
